editor's note poka-dot

Only 7 days left in July.  The 4th of July is long past, but there were plenty of other reasons to celebrate this month. July is National Ice Cream Month and last Thursday was specifically National Peach Ice Cream Day. I got a jump start on celebrating that 'National Day' when I was in Georgia for the 4th. There is nothing like fresh Georgia peach ice cream... That is unless you happen to be eating their fresh blueberry ice cream! July has had a number of 'sweet' days to celebrate, including  Sugar Cookie Day and Lollypop Day, and we still have Milk Chocolate Day, Lasagna Day and Cheesecake Day coming up this week. If we celebrated all of those, maybe it's just as well that we missed National Nude Day July 14th! To see the full list of crazy days in July, Click here.

The first day of school for students in our county will be Monday, August 18th and the tax free weekend is coming up on Aug 2-3. We still have several weeks left of summer though and that is enough time for a mini trip. Florida certainly has some great spots to visit and cool, clear springs that can be explored and enjoyed. See the post below for some last minute ideas. There are also always fun things going on in our little town. It never ceases to amaze me the multitude of events.  So check the calendar and get out there and enjoy life!

HAPPY FLASHING!

LAST MINUTE & NEARBY VACATION IDEAS!

FLORIDA'S SPRINGS
You could spend days exploring the 35 natural springs in Florida. Many offer camping and other lodging along with all types of water sports including swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking, as well as nature walks and hiking. A special favorite of our Flash family is DeLeon Springs. Before your swim, visit The Old Sugar Mill restaurant where pitchers you can cook pancakes on the grill that's built right into your table. The restaurant furnishes of the batter and you can add blueberries, pecans and other goodies to the mix. This is an extremely popular spot, so avoid the crowds by going early in the day to get parking. For a map and descriptions of all the springs, Click Here.
  • UNIVERSAL ORLANDO - By now you have probably heard about the new
Wizarding World of Harry Potter, -  Diagon Alley, that puts guests in the back alleys of London and takes them on a wild ride. '
Potter' author, J.K. Rowling, consulted with Universal every step of the way from décor to restaurant menus. Should be fun!

  • TAMPA ZOO - Lowry Park Zoo's newest resident is Heathcliff, a cute Koala bear that lives in the Australian themed children's area known as Waterloo Station. Rated the best  zoo in America by Parent's Magazine, the zoo has more than 2000 animals, interactive exhibits, rides, shows, on-site dining and shopping. At around $25 for adults and $20 for children, it's less expensive than most theme parks. For info, Click here.
  • LEGOLAND in WINTER HAVEN - LEGOLAND Park  is a 150-acre interactive theme park on the site of the old Cypress Gardens. With more than 50 rides, shows and attractions, restaurants, shopping, a breathtaking botanical garden and the LEGOLAND Water Park, it's geared to families with children ages 2 to 12. AAA MEMBERS - If you're a member of 'Triple A,' be sure to check out their website for more ideas and discounts on other attractions. To get the discounts, purchase tickets online  at the website. Click here.
  • OR .....VACATION IN VERO - When I was growing up in Miami, one of our family's favorite things to do was to spend a weekend at a hotel right on the ocean on Key Biscayne in Miami. Your family could certainly do the same thing just across the bridge in Vero. Think about it...You save on gas and driving time. Wake up to the sounds of the ocean, take a walk on the beach at night and maybe spot a nesting turtle. Both adults and kids could find the world of their dreams in their own backyard!

  FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK

STORING LINENS

A storage tip from antique experts, the Kovels, says that we shouldn't store textiles in plastic bags. Instead, wrap them in cotton sheets. Also, do not let the textiles touch a wooden drawer bottom. Wood is acidic and can stain fabric.

WATCH OUT FOR THE 10 UNHEALTHIEST FROZEN MEALS

Frozen foods just seem to get better and better. They're great for convenience and offer excellent variety, but beware the 'small print'. Some of them are loaded with calories, fat and sodium. (Some of those Hungry Man dinners have over 900 calories!) Here are 10 of the worst offenders from the DAILY MEAL website.  Click here.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

(Maybe this explains the confusion in Congress today!)

A member of the Senate, known for his hot temper and acid tongue, explodes one day in mid-session and begins to shout,

"Half of this Senate is made up of cowards and corrupt politicians!"

All the other Senators plead to the angry member that he withdraw his statement, or be removed from the remainder of the session.

After a long pause, the angry member accepted.

"Ok" he said, "I withdraw what I said. Half of this Senate is NOT made up of cowards and corrupt politicians!"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
BATHING AN INFANT

Once the infant is able to sit up, you can put the child in a plastic laundry basket inside the bathtub. The holes in the basket allow the water to flow in and out, and the sides provide some support so the child can be bathed without being held. Also tub toys won't float away, but never leave the baby unattended.

10 W0RST CITIES FOR ASTHMA

Pollution, pollen and second hand smoke, as well as other factors, can cause problems for asthma sufferers and some cities are worse than others for people with this problem.  Fortunately, no city in Florida made the list, but you may be surprised at some of the ones that did. Here are the worst ten in order:

3. McAllen, TX                           8. Fresno, CA

4. Oklahoma City, OK               9. Tulsa, OK
