 Hello FLASHERS!
Last week I was back in North Carolina for a Mercer University Trustee Retreat. It was wonderful being back in Highlands where both my husband and I spent so many summers of our childhood. There were many things to enjoy! One being the many accomplishments of our University. As many faithful readers already know, my husband and I both graduated from Mercer in Macon, Georgia and my husband has been a Trustee for a number of years. This past year with our WIN over Duke in the NCAA finals, the winningest debut football season In NCAA Division I history, a record enrollment for the fall, fiscal fluency, and a spectacular Board of Trustees that includes President Jimmy Carter, past Georgia Governor, Zell Miller and a Three Star General, Lt. Gen. Claude M. (Mick) Kicklighter, Mercer has never seen such exciting times.
Why do I tell you this? To Gloat? Absolutely not! Actually quite the opposite. I was so profoundly impacted by the casualness, comfort and ease of each VIP acquaintance made. I have never been in a room with such dignitaries; requiring secret service to diligently, yet oh so discretely, hold loyal to their post. Me, engaged in both small talk and meaningful conversation with the likes of these men? Never in my wildest dreams, but It was so natural and so comfortable, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not one to stand on pretense. I fear it would never be sturdy ground for me and I disdain the smugness and arrogance of those who do act with a sense of entitlement and a self imposed rank of importance. Yet, there I was with those I felt had earned the right to an ego. The funny thing is, they were the most humble and gracious individuals that I believe I have ever met. There we sat in the same room, 100% engaged to the extent that my husband and a Co-Trustee friend were planning a quail hunt in the fall with President Carter.
For a couple of days, Highlands North Carolina was visited by some incredibly impressive people. Yet, because of the class and humility each of these deserving individuals possesses, there was no pomp... no fanfare... no haughtiness... no airs. I dare say that the residents had no idea of the company they kept for those few days. What I walked away from the weekend with was a renewed pride in my University and a personal growth 'to-do' list that was derived from witnessing the quiet greatness of these men. Though I will never rise to their level of importance, my hope is that I can exemplify the wonderful attributes that they so eloquently displayed and extended to me during a very special weekend. The moral is that we are always evolving and can always improve ourselves and I believe should strive to do just that. I think this is a good starting place. How about you?
MY LIST: Interest in and acceptance of others ~ Caring ~ Involved ~ Benevolent ~ Confident ~ Friendly ~ Humble ~ Moral ~ Resolute ~ Cheerful ~ Helpful ~ Wise!
Happy Thursday FLASHERS!

 SETTING A PROPER TABLE
With our busy lives, we may not often want to be this formal, but it's fun to do it right for special occasions. If you get confused like so many others... It might be a great idea to copy and paste this diagram to a word document so that you can print it. Then keep it clipped to the side of your fridge or stash it in the front of your recipe box for a convenient and quick reference. It will help your kids learn how to do it too!

A PRODUCT WE LIKE
If you don't like swallowing pills, but you think you could use a few vitamins, take a stroll down the supplement aisle at your pharmacy. For years we've given our children chewable vitamins. Finally, the manufacturers have realized this might be a good idea for adults too. Nature Made, Nature's Bounty, Centrum and some store brands now offer a variety of chewable supplements. 'Chewables' also offer fast acting benefits since it's a known fact that they go straight into the bloodstream. With flavors like raspberry 'gummies' and chocolate mint, you may be tempted to overdose, - but don't. Remember, too much of a good thing can be dangerous!

WEEKEND PROJECT
The message center goes modern and just in time for the start of school. This sleek board was made from a piece of glass that's painted on the back and framed to resemble a window. Messages written with dry-erase markers can be wiped off easily and updated on a daily basis. Another idea is to find an old frame at one of the many second hand shops we have in Vero. Spray paint the frame a gloss white and paint one side of the glass a color of your choice. Voila! You're on your way to an organized year. :)

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
There are 3 ways to get something done:
1. Do it yourself.
2. Hire someone to do it.
3. Forbid your children to do it.

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Here is an interesting twist on a FLASH Mob. This creative 'mob' was used to publicize an exhibit in the Rijksmuseum Museum in Holland. They took one Rembrandt painting from 1642, Night Watch and brought it to life in a busy mall. It is fun to compare the painting on the left with the FLASH Mob image on the right.

RUNWAY FASHIONS FALL/WINTER 2014-15
Because of our mild weather in Florida, fashion here doesn't change that much according to the season. Nevertheless, it's fun to check out what's going on in the rest of the world, and some of the trends might adapt well to our climate. This fall, designers are showing a lot of prints, - something we're used to seeing in spring and summer, but a different look for fall. Consequently, tapestry is a favorite fabric. For a peek at the runways, Click here.

DID YOU KNOW?
In 1902, on a hunting trip to Mississippi, President "Teddy" Roosevelt found and rescued a baby bear cub. Of course, the press gave it wide coverage, catching the attention of an enterprising toy designer. He created a stuffed bear and the "Teddy Bear" was born. Strangely, the President never liked to be called "Teddy," but that's the way the history books remember him.
