We've always heard that all good things must come to an end and so it is as we say farewell to summer! Students in our public schools will head back-to-school on Monday! Yes...Summer is over! How did that happen so quickly? I have no idea! But thinking of the first day of school certainly stirs up a bundle of fun memories!
Do you remember the youthful excitement and joyful anticipation you felt as a child for that first day of school? It's strange to think how extremely vivid those memories are for me, especially when I consider that it's a momentous day I got to experience only 13 times. That's it FLASHERS...13 first days of school from Kindergarten to High school. Those earlier 'firsts' were filled with the hope that my best friend would be in my homeroom class. I remember that initial glance at the homeroom list was met with a thrill and excitement similar to that of heading downstairs on Christmas morning. Later years the homeroom 'wish list' grew to include my broader circle of friends and those boys 'of interest'. Oh those boys!
How about shopping for school supplies, covering books, setting up our desk, notebooks, lockers...organizing everything. Everything so in order. How is it possible that the orderly vision is so astoundingly different just a few weeks into the school year? It certainly doesn't take long for the desk trolls to take over and leave us with books, papers, pens, pencils, crayons, etc. scattered hither and yon! The homework is stained with the jelly from breakfast, which provides a feast for ants, which take over the backpack, which are innocently carried into our homes hours later. Yes, ANTS that are moments away from setting up a colony inside your home outside of the confines of the 'ant colony starter kit' that will be under the tree at Christmas to reinforce the science lesson! Order? Where did it go?
Not to worry ... FLASH to the rescue! You don't have to lose control so easily. You might find it helpful to prepare and set some guidelines in anticipation of the coming year. My hope is that the posts in this issue will help our families keep an upper hand in the fight against the ants and trolls!
As you send your child off for their first day of school this year, make sure you send them off knowing four major truths.
1) You love them for who they are.
2) They will gain respect by treating others with respect. It's a good time to remind them to 'treat others as they wish to be treated' and that bullying in no way; shape or form is to be tolerated!
3) They will get out of this school year and life what they put into it. Work hard every day to be the best they can be. Never ever quit!
4) As a parent you are ALWAYS there for them and will be there to help them over any tough times that pop up during the year.
Good luck to our community children in grades K - 12 and to those heading to college. The world is your oyster! Go out and crack it! Oh... and parents...I've saved a huge dose of luck for you! When you find yourself struggling as you try to RElearn everything and perhaps feel the urge to say...I have never ever used Algebra...EVER... in my day to day life.... REMEMBER...Don't quit! Keep'a-goin'! You'll get there and you will set an amazing example for your children in the process.
Seize the day FLASHERS!

START A TRADITION!
BREAKFAST FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
When I was growing up, on the morning of the first day of school each year, Mom made creamed chipped beef on toast. For my own children, I fixed pancakes in the number of the grade they were entering. Maybe your family would like a poached or fried egg peeking through a piece of toast or grilled cheese breakfast sandwiches with bacon, maybe canned apple pie filling on toaster waffles, or pancake pops, or... whatever. Just pick one of their favorites and start a new tradition. It will get everyone in a good mood and off to a good start! Not to mention the fact that you will be creating a cherished memory for years to come... I think I will go make some creamed chipped beef on toast! :)
MAJOR SOCIAL ISSUES FACING TEENAGERS TODAY
Children are having to deal with many problems that may not have been around when their parents were growing up. Problems from the internet, violence in the media, school shootings and widespread bullying are just a few.
As a parent you may feel overwhelmed, but there is a website that might help. Renowned psychologist, Dr. Ofer Zur, offers suggestions on how parents can deal with some of these problems.
Jay Barbree, a 50 year NBC space correspondent and the only reporter to have covered every manned space mission launched from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral from Mercury through the shuttle program, will present "The View from Within the Spacesuit," which highlights his latest book, Neil Armstrong: A Life of Flight.
The special event, hosted by Florida Tech's Lifelong Scholar Society, begins with a beer and wine reception and book signing from 6-6:45 p.m. at the Denius Student Center lounge on the Florida Tech campus. At 7 p.m., Florida Tech President and CEO Anthony Catanese will welcome guests in the Hartley Room, and a plated dinner will be served featuring either beef tips or a vegetarian selection. At 8 p.m. Winston Scott, senior vice president of external relations and economic development for Florida Tech and an astronaut who flew two space shuttle missions, will introduce Barbree. The event is expected to conclude around 9 p.m.
Tickets are $60 per person for the general public and $50 for Lifelong Scholar members and Florida Tech faculty, staff and students. They are available through Aug. 18 by calling (321) 674-8382 or emailing pdpregistration@fit.edu. Tickets will not be sold at the door. If necessary, please note entrée preference when purchasing tickets.
FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
Eyebrows 101
Shaping your brows
Filling in your brows before tweezing will help you to not over tweeze. If you have little to no brows its best to use a pencil. We love using Jane Iredale
eye pencils. Here is a general idea of where your brows should be. This should be taken loosely because we all have different eyebrows.
1.The head of the brows should start aligned with the inner corner of the eyes or the edge of the nose.
2.The highest part of the arch should be aligned along a diagonal with the middle or edge of your iris.
3.The tail of the brows should end aligned along a
diagonal with the outer corners of your eyes.
IDEAS FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES
With the variety of plastic containers available now, we're no longer limited to sending our kids off to school with a sandwich in a plastic bag. You can make a salad like the one in our recipe below or toss greens with chicken chunks, pecans and dried cranberries. (The greens will stay crisp if the dressing is packed separately in a miniature container.) Just don't forget to pack a plastic fork. Maybe a pasta salad with bits of ham or bacon and a few crackers. Moms might find it helps to make up egg, chicken, and/or tuna salads that will keep in the fridge for a few days. They're easy to put together for last minute sandwiches on those mornings when you're running late. (YES! - That's bound to happen!) But if you find you have extra time and you want to create something FUN... Check outthis websitefor some very creative ideas.
FOOD SAFETY
Since I suggested above that you prepare salads in advance, have you ever wondered how long you can keep specific foods in the refrigerator? Here's a chart from the federal government that answers those questions. You might want to print it out to keep as a handy reference. Click here.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING COSTS 5% MORE!
According to data from the National Retail Federation, the average family will spend $669.28 on back-to-school shopping, including classroom supplies, electronics and clothes. Up roughly 5% from last year; the largest spending increases will be seen for electronics like laptops (up 7%) and school supplies (up 12%). One reason is that since the economy is better, consumers feel comfortable spending more. Another factor: Schools are asking parents to purchase items like hand wipes and tissues, which means that the average school-supplies shopping list now includes 18 items, up from 14 a year ago.
CREATE A BACK TO SCHOOL ROUTINE
Chances are if you have a child starting school, you have probably put a dent in the supply list of notebooks and organizers already. The real struggle and yearning for organization comes a few days or weeks into the year when schedules begin to fill up and your child is stressed trying to fit everything in and get the homework done. Simultaneously you are getting ready to embark on a marathon run as you struggle to remember all of your children's needs, various pick up and drop off schedules, plan a healthy dinner, get the dog to the vet, call the repairman...YIKES! The best plan is to get a jump start and create a back to school routine that will work for your family and hopefully save you some stressful moments. This websitehas a few simple tools to help you keep the peace and organization; paving the way for a successful year!

FLASH VIDEO OF THE WEEK
KATY PERRY FAN
While visiting a friend in Seabrook, NH, I had the pleasure of seeing Katy Perry in concert at The Garden in Boston. I had no idea what was in store and neither did my friend. It was a truly fabulous and 'clean' show. I thought I was at a Broadway production. To the left is a picture If any FLASHER has the opportunity
to see her Prismatic World Tour concert. Do it! You won't be sorry! You might even be as happy as the child in this week's video. Above is a photo from my fun night. But... On to the video of the week. I love this baby's reaction to Katy Perry's song and I think you will too.
