Hello FLASHERS!
I am sure we were all quite surprised and saddened by the death of Robin Williams last week. That sadness resonated when I learned of his depression and why he become the 'funny kid' early on in his life. How could someone responsible for such laughter and joy be so depressed himself? Williams was apparently bullied as a child and would spend time playing alone to avoid the bullies, talking in different voices to entertain himself. He later realized he could make the other children like him by making them laugh. According to one report, his classmates voted him "most humorous" but "least likely to succeed". They were wrong. Williams went on to win multiple awards including six Golden Globes and an Oscar, but he fought depression all of his life. I can't help but believe he never escaped those childhood scars.
As the new school year begins, parents, please impress on your children how very dangerous bullying can be. Teach them to stand up for others, as well as themselves. You may even want to share Robin's story with them.
When my youngest daughter Lilly was in high school, I helped her form a 501(c)3 non profit in Miami called S.O.S (Students Offering Support). With over 100 members from 15 area high schools, both public and private, the group took on many fundraising and service projects throughout the year. During the third year, SOS developed a mission against bullying. That was the year that Mike Brewer, the 15 year old from south Florida was set on fire by another student. That really hit our group hard! The incident was on the nightly local news for quite a while as we followed the hospitalization and recover. It received the national spotlight as well. After all...who could imagine such a thing?
SOS is still going strong in Miami and entering its 8th year. It is a fantastic group that does some amazing things. Young people today can accomplish astonishing things when they channel their intelligence and talents in a positive way. Oh my... and the pride they get in seeing the impact they can have on other students, a non profit that they paired with throughout the year, and ultimately on their community...Well, there are no words! They definitely have fun getting to know students from other schools. But, they also learned many valuable lessons and developed leadership skills that I hope they will carry with them throughout their lives. My daughter always dreamed of expanding SOS and I still think she will at some point in the future. Until then...perhaps we can help! I no longer have children that age, but if any of you parents are interested in forming a similar organization or a chapter of SOS... I would be happy to brainstorm with you. Send me an email or call me (772) 492-3199. Let's eradicate bullying and childhood depression! We can do it! ...I know we can! :)

MEET TIGER! - WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Recently HALO responded to a rescue in Fort Pierce where 52 dogs, including Tiger, and one cat were found kept in a metal shed during the recent blistering temperatures. BEWARE OF 'ENHANCED' RUBIES
According to the antique experts, the Kovels, rubies are being enhanced with a procedure that uses lead glass to fill cracks and flaws to create a better looking, but less valuable stone. Some department stores, online sites and jewelry stores are selling enhanced rubies as "natural" gems. After the difference was noted, most companies now plan to label the stones as "manufactured rubies" or will make it clear in some other way that the rubies have been enhanced. A natural, top-quality ruby sells for as much as $12,000 a carat; a lead-glass-filled ruby can be worth as little as $10 a carat. Like the old adage says, if a ruby's price is too good to be true, it probably isn't a genuine ruby! |

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
Do you know about LED Light Therapy?
LED light therapy is a painless and relaxing. LED stands for Light-emitting -diodes. First developed by NASA, LED works by sending energy-producing packets of light into the deeper layers of the skin. LED lights can be used by skincare professionals for anti-aging treatments by stimulating the skin to produce collagen, which gives young skin its plumb look. LED lights are excellent for treating mild to moderate acne, it works by killing the bacterial deep in the skin. A combination of LED lights therapy can be used to kill bacteria and promote healing. LED lights can also minimize fine lines and wrinkles, treat sun-damage, and reduce redness from rosacea. We offer the Oxylight at The Center for Facial Aesthetics (inside Monnett Eye Center). The Oxylight combines LED lights with Micro-current, ultrasound, oxygen and exfoliation. Call today. 772-589-8111, to find out if the Oxylight is right for you! |

GOOGLE?
Ten years ago this week, GOOGLE began trading as a public stock on the Nasdaq exchange at $85.00 a share. I remember wondering why anyone would buy stock in a company with such an 'odd' name. As this is being written, the sock price is now $584.00 a share and is so well known that it is even used as a verb, as in "I googled that!"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEKCOOKING AND PEELING HARD BOILED EGGSDon't you hate it when peeling a hard boiled egg and the shell sticks to it? Try this method: Put eggs in a large saucepan one-layer deep. Cover with cold water; bring to a boil and immediately turn off heat. Set timer for 14 minutes, drain water and run eggs (in pot) under cold water for one minute. Tap each egg all over to crack shell and let stand in water until quite cold, then drain. The shells will slip off easily. |

St. Paul's Survivor Camp a Big Success
Twenty four children (ages 8-14) enjoyed a fun filled week on the beach with various mental and physical challenges, just like the popular TV show. Challenges included everything from kayak races, fishing, swimming, endurance tests ... even building a raft from bamboo, rope and duct tape. One of this year's favorite activities was a "Food Challenge." Children had to eat various food items including Brussels sprouts, sardines and even pickled pig's feet! Activities also included learning more about God and the Bible.
During the middle of the week everyone kayaked to an island in the Indian River where they put their survival skills to the test. Each "tribe" had to build a shelter, distill water, find food, make a tool & a weapon, gather materials to start a fire and make a "SOS" sign. All "Survivors" were rewarded at the end of the day with hot dogs & s'mores.
This year's 'Camp Survivor' winner, Robert Hoder, won a t-shirt and $50.00
This was the third annual Survivor Camp led by Robin Hanson and Marianne Day. Robin is the Director of Children & Families Ministry at St. Paul's Church and leads the children's Sunday school classes and the children's "Skimmers" group each Wednesday evening. Co-director Marianne Day is an elementary school Physical Education teacher who has applied many times to appear on the actual Survivor show. Since she has not yet been chosen, she has facilitated a "Survivor Camp" since 2004 for kids ages 8-15 and it is a BLAST!
Due to the overwhelming response to this unique camp we are hoping to add more dates next summer. A huge thank you to the Surf Club for the use of their facilities. |
