Happy Labor Day Weekend, Flashers!
In 1894, President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday to pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. And aren't we glad he did? This will be our last long weekend until November. It also means that Fall must be on its way! No, the leaves here aren't turning and there's no hint of crisp, cool air, so how do I know,...'cause football season is here! Have I told you how much I love football season? The Pros are still in the midst of their pre-season games, but next week is the start of the official NFL season. Most of the college games will begin this weekend. Locally, the Sebastian River Sharks will meet the Vero Beach Indians here tomorrow night. Because of the rivalry between the two schools, that's always a special game to see.
I love the enthusiasm that the spirit of the game stirs from deep within the human soul. Young or old, male or female...It doesn't matter...Everyone gets caught up in the emotion of the moment. I do love the game itself, but perhaps what I love most of all is that for a few hours we can sit united with others...strangers really...and yet we have something in common, something that we are willing to get outwardly enthused about. Imagine, an entire stadium of tens of thousands of people for the most part acting as one. In those intensely close games there are times the structure can literally shake from the united chorus of thousands of spectator's energized, spirited and thunderous stomping feet. It is also an astonishing site when each individual spectator plays their role in creating 'the wave'. The anticipation builds as the wave comes closer and closer. You time your stand and coordinated arm raising to fulfill the spectacle that circles the stadium. And here it comes again beckoning your participation once more. You stand and oblige and then recess back into your seat with a sense of accomplishment.
In today's often divided and contentious society, it really is nothing short of a miracle that such an unplanned and unrehearsed expression of unity can occur. There truly are too few opportunities we have in life to stand with literally thousands of others in a unified cause that can stir our emotions until we are soon standing cheering, and encouraging our team to victory! So, FLASHERS...pick your team this season and enjoy the important role you play! Come on out to some of the VBHS games. It will probably bring back high school memories for all of us.
If you can pull yourself away from the television there are quite a few other things going on this weekend. So, make sure you check out the posts and calendar below. Check out the 'Project of the Week' too and head to the nearest craft store to create your 'Team Wreath'.
Enjoy your long weekend, FLASHERS! GO TEAM GO!

This information comes from dietician Kimberly Lummus, MS, RD of the Austin Dietetic Association in Austin, Texas. The number of calories a person needs depends on many individual factors, including age, weight, height, and activity level. Dieticians counsel clients on calorie needs, based on all of these facts and come up with a suggestion for how many calories are needed to maintain, lose, or gain weight.
The following information is average and may vary:
AGE MALE FEMALE
Adult 2,000-2,400 1,200-1,500
Teen up to 3,000 up to 2,200
Children are grouped according to age alone:
Infant 5-12 months 850
1- to 3-year-olds 1,300
4- to 6-year-olds 1,800
7- to 10-year 2,000
"Counting calories is usually not necessary for children," says Lummus. "You just want to make sure that your child is getting all of the requirements from all of the food groups."

A PRODUCT WE LIKE
'SQUIRTY' WHIPPED CREAM
I've always liked the convenience of whipped cream that comes in a pressurized can, but now I like it even more. The "fat-free' variety has only 5-10 calories per tablespoon, 1 gram of sugar and 1 gram of carbs. I've been squirting it on raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. Try it on a vanilla wafer with a slice of banana.... It's like a mini banana cream pie. Mix up some sugar-free pudding with some skim milk and squirt it on top for a decadent but low-cal dessert. Yum!!! My refrigerator will never be without a can again!

DID YOU KNOW?
President Herbert Hoover had never run for any government office prior to running for President. Although he had been appointed to various positions, the only office to which he had ever been elected was in college as class treasurer at Stanford University!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
|

TRICK TO FULLER LIPS
This is a quick little tip that will undoubtedly make your lips appear fuller! You add dimension by playing with shadows + light. If you want to bring a feature forward, you make it lighter, and if you want to push something back, you shade it darker. So to make the lips appear more voluminous, simply outline the top lip and the philtrum (the two midline grooves that run from the top of the lip to the nose) to highlight it.
- Start by tracing the two lines of your philtrum from your nose to your upper lip. Then trace the cupid's bow (the area between the lines) and from each point to the outer corners. Only line the upper lip (leaving the lower lip natural).
- Lightly blend the line with your finger to make it undetectable but enough to still do its job.
- Finish by filling in your entire lips with a color/finish of your choice.
We invite you into the Aesthetic Center for a makeover! Call 772-589-8111 |

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK How to 'Season' a Cast Iron Skillet Cast iron skillets have literally been around for centuries. Rumor has it that they were used as early as 206 B.C. in China. We know they were used in the 1800s before the kitchen stove was invented. Back then, food needed to be in cookware that could withstand the heat of the fireplace or hearth. With all the modern cookware offered today, you might wonder why you would want an iron skillet. Well, not many of today's pans can go from the top of the stove into the oven. Properly seasoned, it's 'non-stick' quality is as good as, or even superior to, the modern variety. To clean it, you only use water, - never soap! Old ones from the flea market are just as good as the new, more expensive ones. (I became a skillet convert when I married because my husband thinks everything should be cooked in an iron skillet. Most of our pots and pans would qualify as genuine antiques!) Perhaps the greatest benefit is the fact that cooking in an iron skillet increases your iron intake. Nearly 10% of American women are deficient when it comes to iron and it is a rather common problem worldwide. Cooking food, especially something acidic like tomato sauce in a cast-iron skillet can increase iron content, by as much as 20 times. To learn how to season and care for an old or new iron skillet, Click here.Make sure to check out our recipe of the week...cooked in an iron skillet! :)
