editor's note poka-dot

Okay, Flashers, it's September.

Did you know that September is National Piano Month? As a child, I took piano lessons, but unfortunately they didn't take to me. I can still play The Battle Hymn of the Republic really well, and at Christmas I do an excellent Drummer Boy ( puh rum-puh-pum over and over - much to my family's dismay!), but I'm afraid that is my entire repertoire! I've always thought I would like to take lessons again. Maybe this is the month to start. The kids are back in school learning new things, maybe we should too. My aunt took her first piano lesson at 60 and my Mom has a friend who began art lessons recently at 83! You're never too old to try something new and people continue to do amazing things as they get older. For a fun list of accomplishments at every age, Click here. Maybe this list will inspire you to return to something you used to love to do or to take up a new hobby or sport. Vero offers many opportunities to learn something new. Registration is now taking place at the Museum of Art for the Adult Art Classes. All of the after school activities are now in the middle of registration. You might consider taking up dance classes at a local studio or why not try the 3rd Thursday Dance at the Heritage Center.  You have also seen the Florida Karate Academy ads in FLASH lately.  What a fabulous program they offer and they cater to entire families. You might want to check them out.  Whatever you're interested in...It is out there just waiting for you! Jump on in and start enjoying every new experience!

THIS WEEKEND
TWO SHOWS ON FRIDAY & SATURDAY Septbember 5th & 6th
7:30 & 9:30
general admission: $16
premium reserve seating $18

Frankie Paul is fast becoming a prominent force in the world of comedy! Frankie Paul has a unique knack for taking a typically unnoticeable situation to new levels of hysterics. With loveable animated appearance and inoffensive attitude, Frankie Paul takes his crowd on a silly roller coaster ride of uproarious laughter. After it's over the crowd is drained but wants another ride. Touring professionally across the country since 1990, he hits on a vast array of today's topics as well as everyday craziness like marriage, family and common sense, or lack thereof.

Rahn Hortman never thought that one day seasoned veterans of comedy would give him personal praise for his own stage show being "refreshing" and "a departure from the norm". But fittingly, nothing about Rahn's journey to the world of stand-up comedy has been normal. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rahn credits his 5th Grade Teacher as the first to nurture his natural urge to entertain. Impressed by Rahn's good grades, but frustrated by his penchant to distract classmates with his jokes, the comedian-in-training was granted the last fifteen minutes of class to do "his show" as long as he composed himself during the first forty-five! "From there I was hooked," he says wistfully. He credits the earliest influences to his humor to Bill Cosby and Martin Lawrence. Bill Cosby's ability to tackle diverse subject matter without uttering a single curse word, and Martin Lawrence's natural gift of representing the "ordinary guy" combined to form the foundation for Rahn's vision. What resulted is a unique blend of profanity-free banter, with pointed observations about everyday people that leave no one safe. Since relocating from Milwaukee to Tampa, Rahn has become a crowd-favorite at comedy hotspots. He is the champion of the WMOR TV Channel 32 "Comedy Challenge," and finished first in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Jokers Wild Contest.

iPHONE INJURIES
Recently Dr. Oz interviewed a young woman with breast cancer. It seems that when she jogged, she would always put her iPhone in her bra. Was it just a coincidence that the tumor appeared in that exact location? iPhones overheat just like computers and can cause burns and even catch on fire. This article from THE DAILY MAIL in the UK describes other incidences.  To read more,

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
SEPTEMBER GARDENING CALENDAR
September is one of the peak gardening months in Florida. Most warm-season annual vegetables have to be planted now if you want a beautiful and productive garden this fall. If you wait too long, you run the risk of crop loss from early frosts in December. For flowers and veggies to plant now, Click here.

EVENING SKINCARE

After enduring makeup, oil, weather, and pollution all day, your skin needs some tender loving care at night. Even when you're tired, it's worth it to take a few minutes to follow these nighttime tips.

Wash Your Face at Night

Don't go to bed until you've cleaned your makeup off your face. If you leave it on, your makeup grinds into your skin all night, causing breakouts and even stretching out the pores, which makes your skin look older.

Boost Collagen With Vitamin A

As you get older, your skin makes less collagen.  If you never stopped making collagen and never damaged collagen, you would never get a wrinkle, your pores would stay small, you'd never get a scar, and your skin would stay nice and tight.  To stimulate collagen production, which will help smooth fine lines and reduce the appearance of pores, apply vitamin A in the form of either a prescription or over-the-counter retinoid every night. As a bonus, retinoids can help lighten brown spots.

Apply Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is thinner than elsewhere on your body, and it becomes even thinner as you age. That can lead to under-eye circles and hollowing. Look for an eye cream or serum with vitamin A, C, E, or K, which can help repair the skin and lighten dark circles.

Be Happy

To look good you need to feel good. "Just take time to enjoy life."  So go for a walk, call a friend, or enjoy a piece of exquisite dark chocolate. All in the name of beauty!

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

CONVERSATION DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN

 .

Woman 1: Oh! You got a haircut! That's so cute!

Woman 2: Do you think so? I wasn't sure when she gave me the

mirror. I mean, you don't think it's too fluffy looking?

Woman 1:  No, it's perfect. I'd love to get my hair cut like that, but I think my face

                      is too wide

Woman 2: Are you serious? I think your face is adorable. And you could easily

get one of those layer cuts - that would look so cute I think. I was

actually going to do that except that I was afraid it would accent my

                      long neck.

Woman 1: Oh - that's funny! I would love to have your beautiful long neck!

Man 1: Haircut?

Man 2: Yeah.

THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO "HASHTAG"

This allows you to organize content and track discussion topics based on those keywords. For a mor detailed explanation, Click here.

Honey Ham-Stuffed Biscuits

Perfect for after-school snack or football party

Start by preheating your oven and spraying your baking sheet with non-stick spray. Remove the Grands! Flaky Layer biscuit dough from can. Separate into 8 biscuits. Take each biscuit and cut a slit on 1 side, forming a deep pocket.

Place one piece of cheese inside the pocket. Top cheese with one piece of ham and 1 teaspoon of honey.

Then press the dough over the filling to seal the biscuit. Place filled biscuit onto the baking sheet and repeat filling process with all biscuits.

Bake biscuits for 15 minutes, or until golden-brown. Remove from oven and drizzle the tops with remaining honey. Serve
immediately.

EXCHANGE CLUB DONATES TO YOUTH GUIDANCE

(Pictured from left: Paul Williamson, Sebastian Exchange President,
Doug Borrie and Felix Cruz, Youth Guidance)

The Exchange Club of Sebastian, at it's August 27th luncheon meeting, was pleased to present Doug Borrie and Felix Cruz from Youth Guidance with a check for $7,500.  This gift was made possible by the highly successful Sebastian Exchange Blue Water Open Charity Offshore Fishing Tournament held on June 7, 2014.  All proceeds from this tournament are donated to non-profit organizations in the community, with emphasis on those supporting the prevention of child abuse and youth activities.  Youth Guidance, with it's long history of nurturing and mentoring children from low income, single family homes, is particularly worthy of Sebastian Exchange's support.

As with many non-profits, county and state funding has been significantly curtailed due to budget constraints.  Youth Guidance funding is supported 99% by donations, grants, and United Way.  Doug Borrie stated that with only four paid staff members, 98% of the time spent with the children are volunteers. They are always looking for volunteers, people interested in helping these young people succeed. For more information on how to become a mentor contactwww.youthguidanceprogram.org or call 772-770-5040.
LADIES FROM CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH
PREPARE MEALS FOR CAMP HAVEN

Members and friends of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Sebastian, FL, are getting an early start on the Sept. 7 "God's work. Our hands" Sunday. Christ the King Lutheran has started the celebration early by creating some home-cooked meals for the 15 men living in Camp Haven. The recently renovated facility in Vero Beach is without kitchen facilities so is dependent on others to provide meals.

Camp Haven is looking for additional groups to provide cooked meals for one or more residents on other days, especially Mondays and Fridays.
It needs volunteers for a wide range of other service areas too, including lawn care and yard work. To find out how you can make an immediate impact in the lives of the homeless, call (772) 999-3625 or email [email protected].

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE #1

The Vero Beach Museum of Art staff received an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from their friends at Riverside Theatre last week. As seen in the video above they were all too happy to jump on board for a cold soaking for charity. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a social fund raising challenge from the ALS or 'Lou Gherig's Disease' that requires that a challenged person or party be doused with a bucket of icewater within 24 hours of receiving the challenge, and making a suggested donation to the ALS Association.

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE #2

Agents and staff from Norris & Company Real Estate took the Ice Bucket Challenge and raised over $1000 to benefit ALS. The team gathered at agent Deena Dick's home, with those dumping the buckets of ice water getting almost as wet as those on the receiving end! "We enjoy getting together as a group, but even more so when it's for a worthy cause like this," said office manager Carol Prezioso.
