editor's note poka-dot Hello FLASHERS,

I know last week I opened by saying something like... Wow! It's September.  Time does continue to move in the fast lane these days. Today marks the 13 year since the attack on our homeland changed our lives forever.  It just doesn't seem that long ago and I remember every moment that unfolded before my disbelieving eyes!

Do you remember what those following days were like? They were sure scary times. I was living in Miami at the time and my children were going to a school that was right across from the old FPL plant. Armed guards were everywhere! Power plants received round the clock protection as they were thought to be prime targets. You couldn't go into a high rise building downtown without seeing more armed guards and you had to show your ID to get on the elevator. I have never been fond of elevators, but the few trips I remember following that fateful day were definitely filled with a bit more angst. We were afraid to get the mail because of the anthrax scare and our doctor friend stocked up on cipro antibiotic for both our families ... just in case. My husband...Always the preparer...bought gas masks for the two of us and our three children and we had an emergency escape plan to our camp in the Big Cypress...because who would ever think to cause trouble out there? Wow! Our world was turned upside down. Flying was definitely changed forever. Scary times....Right?

But, do you remember the good? There was a positive side. Remember? I always try to look at the positive and I have often said you won't find the 'bad news' in FLASH that you will in other news outlets. So, put on your rose colored glasses and walk on the more pleasant side of the street with me.  Those terrorist...They could not kill our spirit! They may have reduced two of our most iconic buildings to a pile of traveling powder, but they only made our resolve rise to new heights. As strong and as steadfast as those twin towers were moments before tragedy struck! We were an amazing group of people following 9-11! Remember? Did you fly your flag because...well, you just had to? Did you turn to your faith more-so than the day before? Did you help a stranger? Give blood? We bonded! We found that commonality in the midst of such unrest that served to connect us one to the other. There was a sense that we were all in this thing together!  Such an unimaginable act of pure and ruthless evil left us all stunned and breathless...yet more connected! We had no energy to fight against ourselves and to carry on senseless grudges! We mellowed against each other and put our energy to do good! In a sense we became family with the strangers around us. That was the amazing outcome. That is that strange bonding that occurs after tragedy. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of strength, pride, resolve and determination that our human spirits can muster when our lives are rattled to the core! We are amazing creatures!

Today, 13 years later, we are nearly back to the security we were familiar with on September 10, 2001. Yes, flying is more difficult but we traverse our community and buildings without constant fear. We made it! We often hear that time heals all pain.  And I guess in time ... things do get better. So, FLASHERS. Whatever difficulties you are facing or will face. Remember one truth. You are amazing and you don't even know the limit of your strength. You will get through the hard times as you have before. We will all be changed in some ways and marked in others. We will hold to the memories. Hopefully tighter to the good! And we will carry on ... united!

God Bless You, FLASHERS! And may his loving arms embrace those families who lost loves ones on this fateful day 13 years ago.

WEEKEND PROJECT

This is a super quick and easy outdoor stand that you can use for extra serving space, gardening space or a spot to display some prized plants.  All you need are two pallets. Pallets are something you can usually find in throwaway piles behind stores. If you aren't sure if they are free for taking...just ask!  They are usually happy to indulge your creative spirit!

Once you have your two pallets anchor them together with a metal flat plat that you can get at any hardware store, Lowes, or Home Depot. Then get some paint in a color of your choice and transform this rough wood skeleton structure into the beginning of a chic piece of outdoor furniture. If you prefer, you can make it super easy and get some spray paint. Measure the width of your pallet and while you are at your hardware store pick up some stepping stones to set on top.  If you want to get really creative you can paint a design on the stepping stones.  Now we're talkin'!

 :) ENJOY!
I found this idea on a foreign website. I can't translate for you.
But, I do like to give credit where credit is due!

CROWD FUNDING....WHAT IS IT?

You have probably heard some of the stories that have emerged as a result of crowd funding. Anything from the heartwarming story of the patient who raised thousands to help cover medical costs to the 'kinda' wacky success of the young man who wanted to raise $12 dollars to purchase the ingredients for, I think it was salad or coleslaw. He ended up raising over $30,000 which he ended up donating to charity.

Crowd funding is a way to 'fund' your great idea, project, film, book, or product. The average amount raised is between $5,000 and $10,000 and it works because you are asking for small amounts of money. Most family and friends will be thrilled that you are only asking for $10, $20, $50 instead of thousands. Most will be happy to throw their support behind you. Call it an early birthday or holiday gift. Crowd funding makes dreams come true! Crowd Funding Live is just one site that you might want to explore to learn more.

Humidity and Your Skin

Many people never realize that humidity has a profound effect on their skin. Florida is famous for our HIGH Humidity. In high humidity there is too much moisture in the air. We control our body temperature by sweating. When there is excess humidity, our sweat does not cool us off as well. The air around us is already full of water, so it does not evaporate away our sweat, so we feel and get hotter. Our sweat stays in contact with our skin longer and can irritate and clog pores causing them to appear larger and darker. Clogged pores are one of the most common skincare issues we care for at The Center for Facial Aesthetics. We have treatments and protocols designed to clean and minimize pores effectively.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TINTING YOUR HOUSE WINDOWS?

We often think that tinting windows is just for the car. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Did you know that it won't darken your home? Not to worry...It's not the dark tinting that you see on so many vehicles. Below are 4 reasons why you should call us and consider tinting your house?

1) Rejects nearly 79% of the solar energy which reduces the heat in your house.

2) Rejects the annoying glares.

3) Offers protection from fading for the following items: expensive artwork, furnishings, hardwood floors, carpets floors, and draperies.

4) Reduces your AC usage.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
FIND WALL STUDS
Say you have something heavy to hang or you want to secure a shelf to the wall; you will need to anchor into the wall stud. Here is an easy way to find studs if you don't have a stud finder. Most studs are placed at 16-inch intervals, so once you know where one is, you can usually find the rest.

Start at a corner, where there's always a stud. Or take the cover plate off an electrical outlet and find out on which side it's mounted to the stud. From there, measure 16, 32, 48 inches, and you should hit a stud at each of those measurements. Once you mark those spots, you can use a thin bit to drill a test hole at the top of the base molding, which you can easily repair with a dab of caulk. No hole in the wall if by chance we miss the stud.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Baked S'mores
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/3 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt (optional)
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs (approximately 5 full graham crackers)
1 tsp baking powder
2 or 3 super-sized (5 oz.) chocolate bars (e.g. Hershey's)
1 1/2 cups marshmallow creme/fluff (or mini marshmallows if you must!)

Directions

* Preheat oven to 350. Grease bottom of  pan.
* In a large bowl or stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar until light.
* Beat in egg and vanilla.
* In a small bowl, whisk together flour, graham cracker crumbs, baking powder
  and salt.
Add to butter mixture and mix at a low speed until combined.
* Divide dough in half and press half of dough into an even layer on the bottom
  of the prepared pan.
* Place chocolate bars over dough. Two 5 oz. Hershey's bars should fit perfectly
for 8 by 8] side by side, but break the chocolate (if necessary) to get it to fit in
  a single layer. [use 3 Hershey's for 12 by 8 pan]
* S
pread marshmallow fluff evenly over the chocolate layer.
Place remaining dough in a single layer on top of the creme. This is most
easily done by putting the second half of the dough in a gallon size freezer
bag. Use your palms or rolling pin to flatten it out, and then use scissors to cut   down both long sides of the bag, so it will open up book-style. Open it up
carefully, and the dough will stick on one side of the bag. Then place the bag,
dough side down, on the other three layers. From there peel the bag up and
carefully spread the dough where it is uneven.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool completely or almost
completely for the melty factor before cutting into bars.
