editor's note poka-dot

Happy Thursday, Flashers!

We began this month telling you about some of the special days in September. Well, guess what? Today is National Cheeseburger Day. How long has it been since you indulged in a big,... juicy,... delicious.... cheeseburger? If your mouth isn't watering by the thought, then you must be a vegetarian. The rest of us, let's celebrate Cheeseburger Day! It's as good an excuse as any to enjoy this special treat. Our family had two other reasons to celebrate this month. My husband of 29 years, Howell Watkins, aka "Papa," had a birthday last weekend. He was at our farm in Georgia and I was right here in Vero. He went up early for his SAE reunion at Mercer. I will follow next week after we get the October Community Calendar distributed. Secondly, my cousin's daughter got married in Atlanta.
She was just gorgeous and the wedding was everything you want a wedding to be! The reception was a true celebration. Nearly everyone was dancing and having a grand ole' time.  Have you ever noticed how people come alive at a wedding reception? Doesn't matter the age, everyone is joyous, lively and in a celebratory mood; a factor which entices everyone out of their shell just a bit. Some weddings have some antics. (Some day I will tell you about mine and all of those 'fine' SAE brothers of my husband's.) This time I was the one to participate in a little 'fun'.  Photo bombing is a term used today when you plant yourself in a picture unbeknownst to those in the photo. Jeff Foxworthy, comedian, author, host of 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader', etc. is a friend of my cousin and he was at the wedding. Here is a picture of me 'not acting my age' along with my daughter who was also not acting her age; as we 'photo bombed' my niece's picture with Jeff. It quickly went 'viral' in our little family circle and brought a good laugh to everyone; even beautiful, Brittany in the photo who was 'acting her age.' This was my first 'bomb' and I will not make it a habit. However, I do have to admit that it is fun to push that envelope a little bit. Not in a dangerous way, although some of you might enjoy that, but in a good-natured way.  I encourage all FLASHERS to give it a try. No matter your age! I have no doubt that if you explore the confines of that envelope you will undoubtedly make some wonderful lifetime moments that will bring a smile to your heart when remembered.  It's never a bad thing to find the 'child within'! We don't always have to 'act our age', but you do HAVE TO pick the right moment and my opportunity was a perfect one!

ENJOY LIFE FLASHERS!

HOLLYWOOD'S BRAINY BEAUTIES

It seems that so much trash comes out of Hollywood these days. It's good to know that several actresses not only have their heads on straight, they're head and shoulders above most of their peers. For the background on ten of these brainy beauties, Click here.

VETERANS' BURIAL BENEFITS

The Department of Veterans' Affairs has received a lot of bad press recently for some of their programs, but they also do a lot of good that many people may not be aware of. One we were surprised to learn about are the burial benefits offered at no cost to the families of veterans and their spouses. Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any of our 131 national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Cremated remains are buried or intern in national cemeteries in the same manner and with the same honors. Burial benefits available for spouses and dependents buried in a national cemetery include burial with the Veteran, perpetual care, and the spouse or dependents name and date of birth and death will be inscribed on the Veteran's headstone, at no cost to the family. Eligible spouses and dependents may be buried, even if they predecease the Veteran. Burial benefits available for Veterans buried in a private cemetery may include a Government headstone, marker or medallion, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family. DID YOU KNOW YOU COULD SAVE LOTS OF MONEY...AND MAKE SOME TOO?

There are so many ways to save money on groceries today. Here are two.

1) Grocery Pal App ---- Click Here

This amazing app points you toward weekly sales at your local supermarkets and discount stores. Download Grocery Pal for free and find savings from stores such as SAFEWAY, CVS/pharmacy, Walmart, Walgreens, RiteAid, Target, ALDI, Kmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar, any many many more!

2) Favado ----- Click Here to watch a video that reviews and demonstrates

Favado also tracks savings/discounts at a number of different stores. But, it also shows a paper clip icon next to some items which indicates if there is a coupon available ...allowing you to double-dip into savings! :)

There are also a number of sites that allow you to sell items. So find one that works for you and create some magic by turning some of that 'stuff' that is taking up room in your closets and house... into $$$$$. It can be quite easy once you get started. When  you find some extra jingle in your pocket, it's a great idea to invest your savings in a way that will have your new found money working for you and making you more money!

1) Liketwice.com - This site allows you to sell your clothes. And admit it...We all have things in our closet that still have the tags hanging off them. Get it out and turn it into money!

2) http://www.cashforcds.com/  - This site will allow you to sell your old CD's and Videos.

3) http://ww7.gazzalle.com/ - This site allows you to sell your old cell phones...working or

not! There is still money to be offered.

4) https://www.etsy.com/  - Etsy is a fantastic site for any crafty or creative person to find some extra dollars!  You can create craft items that you find on FLASH and go into business and sell them on Etsy! :) Hey,  - even a box of broken china can go for $40. So start saving those 'crash and break' items.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics

END OF SUMMER SKIN CARE!

* Keep wearing sunscreen: Sunscreen should be applied year round whenever you are going to be outside. Make sure it is a broad spectrum lotion to block UVA and UVB rays.

* Exfoliate: Your skin has been exposed to the summer sun and humidity for months. Exposure can lead to dull and rough skin patches, as well as dry, dead skin cells. Exfoliating the damaged layer of skin cells allows for healthier skin to make an appearance. Exfoliating also improves absorption of skincare products.

* Anti-Aging Regime: Sun damage and dry skin can cause signs of aging like wrinkles which are a major concern for men and women alike. Start an anti-aging regime that you can maintain year round.

* Repair Sun Damaged Skin: Freckles, sunburn, darker age spots and blotchiness are all common forms of skin damage. Focus on evening out your skin tone and treating these problem areas with medical strength lightening products and/or IPL treatments.

WEEKEND PROJECT
'MAP IT OUT'

You can take a 'find' from one of our local thrift stores and give it renewed life with this great mapping idea.  You can literally remake a table, chair, lampshade, etc. with an old or new map. You can create a sentimental keepsake by using a map with some 'meaning'. Perhaps a map of one of your favorite get-away locations. To start the transformation all you need to do is cut your map to the size of the piece you want to refinish. If needed give the piece a fresh coat of paint. Soak your map cut-out in either a diluted glue mixture or decoupage glue for just a bit to make it easier to work with.  Then smooth it over the surface, making sure there are no air bubbles.  Once it is dry, give your piece a minimum of two coats of varnish. Pick your desired shine. I personally like the Polycrylic water based Minwax. It does not yellow with time and since it is a water-base product, clean up is a snap!

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, "And what starting salary are you looking for?" The engineer replies, "In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." The interviewer inquires, "Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?" The engineer sits up straight and says, "Wow! Are you kidding?" The interviewer replies, "Yeah, but you started it."
