A Terrific Thursday To You FLASHERS!
September has gone by much to quickly! The first official day of fall began this past Tuesday and temperatures in the northern states have already begun to drop. (My husband was bragging yesterday about the temperatures being in the mid 60's in south Georgia.) It's heading our way...I just know it! We just need to be a bit more patient. As we begin to welcome fall, our Jewish friends are welcoming the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated this year from sundown yesterday to nightfall on September 26. To learn more about Rosh Hashanah and to peruse some of the special recipes enjoyed during this celebration, click here.
I pick up the October calendar today and will begin distribution. It is filled with fun things to do. All of the 'Fall Festivals' are beginning and the planners are in crunch mode finalizing all details. Make sure you take a look at the calendar as it has events that aren't featured in our newsletter. This is the last weekend for the Walter Wick exhibit at the Museum of Art; entitled: Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic. If you haven't stopped by...Do so this weekend while you are at Riverside Park enjoying the Art Festival hosted by the Cultural Council. Something fun for our young readers is the Teen Book Club that has just started at the Vero Beach Book Center. They will be meeting Saturday at 3:00 to discuss; The Warrior's Heart by Eric Greitens. Stop by and jump on board for next month. Saturday night is the concert on Ocean Drive. We will be there distributing the October calendar. Come on by! It is a great way to spend a Saturday night after checking out the open house at PEAK Health and Fitness earlier in the day. Lastly, I want to point out one more thing. 'Restaurant Week' starts on Saturday. Check out the post below for details on this special week of restaurant deals.
ENJOY YOURSELF, FLASHER!

THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH SURNAMES
Did you know that last names were not even used in England until after the Norman conquest in 1066. As the population grew, they needed to add additional names or descriptions. Many were taken from occupations like Thomas the Baker. Consequently, many Americans have names that were passed down from their English ancestors. You might find the history of your own name from this article from ancestry.com.

WEEKEND PROJECT
HALLOWEEN IS COMING!
This is a fun fall project that the entire family will have fun creating. First, head on over to Lowe's or Home Depot for some wood. They will cut to your specifications so, you can get pieces in whatever length and width you'd like. The first cut is free and then I believe it is 25 cents for each additional cut. Decide which friendly goblins you want to bring to life and buy appropriate paint colors. Again, I suggest latex paint because it is so much easier to clean up. Remember to give your pieces at least two coats of varnish. (I recommend Polycrlic Minwax). You can screw the pieces into a base to help them stay erect or nail a wooden stake to the back of each one to make staking them in your yard a snap!
HAPPY CREATING FLASHERS!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
.
A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me! Mom said we came from monkeys." His father replied, "Your mom was talking about her side of the family."

DID YOU KNOW? PRESIDENT HARRY S TRUMAN A period is never placed after the middle initial "S" in President Truman's name because it doesn't stand for a name. It seems that his parents couldn't agree whether to give him the middle name of Shippe for his paternal grandfather or Solomon for his mother's grandfather. Consequently, they compromised with just plain S. |

Carol Brown Goldberg: Recent Works September 20, 2014 - January 4, 2015 Since the late 19th century, artists have often compared the use of design and color with the work of modern musical composers, with each form or hue corresponding to musical phrases and tones. Carol Brown Goldberg carries on this "chromesthetic" tradition in her recent paintings, creating, in the words of one critic, "glorious color-saturated paintings that make us feel heavenly."

Based on the open forms of modernist European sculpture, this new kind of three-dimensional art -called kinetic sculpture- was both lyrical and technical. Like dance, in which forms were constantly flowing and changing as they moved in space, this new kind of sculpture was filled with poetic energy. At odds with the heavy carved or cast sculpture of earlier centuries, kinetic sculpture immediately attracted devoted followers and continues to fascinate viewers today.
