Hello FLASHERS and WELCOME OCTOBER!
Please join me in saying 'sayonara' to a 'soggy' September! My oh my...It sure has been raining. As a result of the recent rainstorms and the predicted inclement weather on Saturday...the Autumn In The Park scheduled for this weekend has been rescheduled for November 1st & 2nd. 'The rains' are also influential in providing inspiration for this week's 'corny' 'Chuckle of the Week'. My thought is we have to find something to laugh about when the skies are gray! Sort of goes in line with the old adage 'Laughter is the best medicine.' Mayo Clinic recently cited laughter as one of the 12 habits of highly healthy people. The article encouraged all of us to make laughter a habit noting that the health benefits are physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual? Did you know that 'laughing clinics' are popping up everywhere? It has been discovered that your body cannot differentiate fake laughing from real laughing. So, any laughter is just the thing that the doctor ordered!
Did you know that we have a 'laughing lady' in Vero Beach? Her name is Nancy Johnson and she offers a class entitled "Enjoy Life - Choose Laughter" at the North Indian River Library in Sebastian on the First Wednesday of the Month at 2:00. Unfortunately that was just yesterday...But you can get it on your calendar for next month. Not to worry, I am sure you will find plenty of other reasons to smile and chuckle throughout the month. Our calendar starts to kick into full gear so make sure you keep an eye on it. Riverside Theatre is kicking off their season this month, The Art Museum has their new exhibits, tomorrow is the gallery stroll downtown, The Comedy Zone is this weekend at Riverside and I have no doubt will give all FLASHERS a reason to laugh! Whatever it is, find your own reason to smile and enjoy life, FLASHERS. Definitely find some time to have fun. If you have followed FLASH for a while you know that one of my favorite quotes is from the movie 'Arthur' when he states, "Isn't this fun? Isn't fun the best thing to have?" The answer is a resounding YES! FUN is by far the best thing to have. So...'Go have you some', FLASHERS! My hope is that you will find information in the features below that will have you enjoying October; come rain or come shine!
Enjoy Life!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Now that the kids have settled back into school, there is no doubt that the multitude of extracurricular activities is being explored. We've often heard that we need look no further than our own backyard for the wonderful things in life and again this proves to be true. We are quite lucky to have the Florida Karate Academy located right here in Vero. It has been an incredible program in our 'own backyard' for 20 years!
In 1994, Dave Roth opened Florida Karate Academy (FKA). Dave graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1980 and went to the University of Florida where he studied Business Administration. He competed in karate tournaments all over the state while in college and won 3 State championships. He discovered what an incredible impact the sport had not only on him physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. He also discovered his passion for teaching and mentoring young students.
Since starting the Academy in a small 1300 square foot building, Dave expanded his program 10 years ago and moved to their current location at 1140 19th Street. He has sent a team of students to the AAU National Karate Championships every year since 1995, produced over 300 World Champions, 2 PKF Pan-American Champions, and 4 WKC World Champions. They have been a top 10 AAU Karate Club for over a decade and Sensei Roth has served as an AAU Team Coach and a WKC International Referee. There is no doubt that this is a top notch-program!
Martial art training develops self esteem, builds character and is appropriate for all ages. Florida Karate Academy has classes for students as young as 3 years old and for the whole family. They also have classes in Tai Chi, Jujitsu, Arnis, and Kobudo. Click here for more information on all their programs or call: (772) 563-9333.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
The Summer to Fall Makeup Transition
When it comes to switching up our makeup bag in preparation for Fall, "You really don't have to change up that much," says Gisele Ayora, makeup artist at The Center for Facial Aesthetics. All summer we've been after that fresh, dewy look of glowing skin. Keep that dewy glow by using a hydrating primer, like Jane Iredale's Smooth Affair Primer. "Just apply to areas where you need it-the centre of the nose, cheeks, middle of the forehead." Add a highlighter overtop cheekbones and dust with bronzer to create dimension and glow. While we saw trends this summer like eye liner trends in brighter hues or cat eye shape, and soft, pretty blush tones of pink and peach, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to give these up after Labor Day. "Look at the trends but see what brings out your best features," she advises. And don't be afraid to try something new this season. Or call Gisele or Danna, for a complimentary make over! AND don't forget to clean your brushes! Call - (772) 589-8111

 FUN AND EASY
Get into the Halloween spirit with some fun door
decorations! You can cut all of the monster accents from felt or poster board. Pick up some pipe cleaners for the spider legs and of course... the giant spider is just perfect too.
Here is a tutorial video for a very large undertaking to create a massive spider. Normally something this enormous wouldn't find its way into FLASH. However...I LOVE how they built the legs and figured I could incorporate a scaled down version of this wonderful spider. Here is a tutorial video for a bat garland. You can use it to create the hanging bats pictured by simply using the same bat template and using a thin piece of foam-board that will keep your bats stiff. Send me your pictures. I would love to see your creations and share them with our FLASHERS.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK WHAT A GOOD IDEA! We heard about this one from a busy mother recently and love it! If you have more than one child in your family, you probably spend a lot of time sorting socks and underwear. Solution: Give each family member their own mesh laundry bag. Have them put their socks and undies in it; toss it in the washer, then the dryer, then deliver it back to the owner with everything intact. What a time-saver! |

What happens when it rains cats and dogs? (You might step in a poodle!)
What do you call it when it rains chickens and ducks? (Fowl weather!)

The National Debt Clock is a billboard-sized running total display which constantly updates to show the current United States gross national debt and each American family's share of the debt. It is currently installed on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. The idea for the clock came from New York real estate developer Seymour Durst, who wanted to highlight the rising national debt. In 1989, he sponsored the installation of the first clock. (At the time, the debt was under $3 trillion.) It is still running and can be seen at Times Square in New York City. If you don't plan a visit to NY anytime soon, you can see a constantly changing, detailed version online. Click here
HMMMM!... A little scary I dare say!

APOLOGY FROM MY MOM
Dear Val,
"Mea culpa"...I think that's Latin for "My fault." The recipe for " a different, easy cheesecake" that I gave you to put in FLASH a couple of weeks ago was terrible! I hadn't tried it, but since it was low carb and loaded with protein, I thought it might help me lose a couple of pounds and would be helpful to your readers who share the same goal. It was featured in a recent issue of WOMAN'S WORLD magazine that I picked up at the supermarket, so I thought it would be okay. It wasn't. If any others tried it and still have it in the fridge, I've found it's pretty good for breakfast with maple syrup on it! It's a shame to let it go to waste, so forget the diet. The only other solution is that I think your dog might enjoy it. Love, Mom
Editors note: A couple of other readers had the same experience. Take Mom's advice and give it to the dog.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Candy Corn and White Chocolate Softbatch Cookies
Ingredients:
1- Large Egg
1/2 - Cup Unsalted Butter
2 - Tablespoons Cream or Half and Half
2 - Cups All-Purpose Flour
1 - teaspoon Baking Soda
3/4 - Cup Brown Sugar, Lightly Packed
2 teaspoons Corn Starch
1/4 cup - Granulated Sugar
1 - Pinch Salt
1-Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
1- Cup White Chocolate Chips
1-1/2 - Cups Candy Corn
- cream together the first 5 ingredients (through vanilla) on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Stop, scrape down the sides of the bowl, and add the next 5 ingredients (through optional salt), and mix on low speed until just incorporated, about 1 minute; don't overmix.
- Add the candy corn, white chocolate chips, and mix until just incorporated.
- Using a medium 2-inch cookie scoop
, form heaping two-tablespoon mounds (Approx. 20). Place mounds on a large plate, flatten mounds slightly, cover with plasticwrap, and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or up to 5 days, before baking. Do not bake with warm dough because cookies will spread and bake thinner and flatter. Important note - Strategically place candy corn so that it's not baking directly on cookie sheet because it will melt, burn, or turn runny if it is. The candy corn pieces need to be in the interior of the cookies, shielded and buffered by dough.
- Preheat oven to 350F, line a baking sheet with a Silpat or spray with cooking spray. Place mounds on baking sheet, spaced at least 2 inches apart (I bake 8 cookies per sheet) and bake for about 9 minutes, or until edges have set and tops are just beginning to set, even if slightly undercooked, pale and glossy in the center. Do not overbake because cookies will firm up as they cool. Baking longer than 10 minutes could result in cookies with overly browned undersides. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooking. Cookies will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 4 months. Unbaked cookie dough can be stored airtight in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or frozen for up to 4 months, so consider baking only as many cookies as desired and save the remaining dough to be baked in the future when desired.
