KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED, FLASHERS

.

Hurricane season has just over six weeks to go. So, we aren't out of the woods yet. As a matter of fact, the last one to hit south Florida was Wilma on the 24th of October in 2005. According to the National Weather Service, Texas and Louisiana are the prime targets for major hurricanes before August, but the threat switches  from west to  east  in August  through November. - And, guess what?  Most October hurricanes land  in southern Florida! Since 1851, Florida has had more major storms at 37 than any other state, and 15 of those were on the southeast coast.  Our family was living in Miami in 1992 when Andrew devastated that area. In many ways it seems like yesterday we hunkered down in the closet in our garage as Andrew redesigned our home and left us without electricity for over a month. That being said, I'll take our hurricanes to California's earthquakes, fires and mudslides, or those tornadoes around Kansas and Oklahoma. At least we have warnings and can take precautions to protect our property and ourselves. So, let's count our blessings and say a prayer that we stay storm-free for another six weeks.

To pass the time take a look at our growing calendar that offers a little something for everyone! Looking for family fun?  Check out the Pumpkin Village near the AMC theatre at the mall. It opens tomorrow. Halloween in wonderland opens at the Riverside Children's Theatre and Skate Factory is hosting special skate days and nights for adults only, families and kids. Get in some laughs at the Comedy Zone this weekend and plan some time to visit the new exhibits at the Museum of Art.  You can take advantage of the free admission day next Saturday the 24th. You have several local craft shows and you should try to squeeze in the Concert this weekend on Ocean Drive. (see post below) Next week the Book Center has a whirlwind of events.  It's nearly impossible to be bored in this town. Get out and ENJOY your community FLASHERS and all that it has to offer!

VERO POWER! ~ VERO POWER!

Don't waste your time waiting for the politicians to save you money on your electric bill. An independent study done by the energy firm Consol shows that window films save more energy per dollar spent than any other retrofit features for your home. Window films reduce energy (kWh) two to four times more cost effectively than ceiling insulation, they are eight to fifteen times more cost effective than reducing air infiltration into your home, and are three times more cost effective than replacing your air conditioner. These are real results as reported by an independent and real energy firm with no ties or affiliations to the
window film industry.

There are many added benefits to window film other than just saving on your electric bill. Window films block 99% of the Ultra Violet rays. It can help stop fading of your furniture and art work. It can reduce the amount of glare. The film for your home is not the same as the dark window tinting used on cars. Home tinting will not darken your view of the world outside. If you are interested in learning more call Solar Solutions Window Tinting. Brian will be happy to answer your questions and provide you a free estimate.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROS & CONS

In 1972, the US Congress placed marijuana

in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act because they considered it to have "no accepted medical use." Although that is still the 'official' position of the federal government, newer studies have shown some positive, as well as negative, effects. Currently 23 of the 50 U.S. states and D.C. have legalized the medical use of marijuana. Emotions both for and against, are very strong in our community. The organization ProCon.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity whose purpose is to research issues that are controversial and present both sides without bias. Since it will be on our November ballot. We thought the following information from this group could be helpful to our Flashers in making a decision:

FOR

"Proponents of medical marijuana argue that it can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions. They cite dozens of peer-reviewed studies, prominent medical organizations, major government reports, and the use of marijuana as medicine throughout world history."
AGAINST
"Opponents of medical marijuana argue that it is too dangerous to use, lacks FDA-approval, and that various legal drugs make marijuana use unnecessary. They say marijuana is addictive, leads to harder drug use, interferes with fertility, impairs driving ability, and injures the lungs, immune system, and brain. They say that medical marijuana is a front for drug legalization and recreational use."

You can explore the Pro/Con website to understand the reasons behind each position as well as the effects of marijuana on specific diseases. Click here and scroll down to the category that interests you.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

GOD'S OFFER TO ADAM

(This one is for you guys!)

God looks down and notices that Adam is all alone while all the animals have companions, so he decides to create a companion for man as well. He comes to see Adam and says to him, "Adam, you are my greatest creation and therefore, I am going to create for you the ultimate companion. She will worship the very ground you walk on; she will be highly intelligent; she will wait on you hand and foot and obey your every command.  She will  also be very beautiful, but it will cost you an arm and a leg." Thinking for a few moments, Adam replies, "What could I get for just a rib?"

SWEET POTATO LEAVES-

THE NEW HEALTHY GREENS

By now I think we all know how good sweet potatoes are for you, but did you know that sweet potato leaves are even more nutritious than the tuber itself. Weight per weight, 100 grams of fresh leaves contain more iron, vitamin C, folates, vitamin K, and potassium and less sodium than its tuber. FLASH is going out on a limb and predicting that sweet potato leaves will become the new popular green. They're slightly sweet and more tender than collards or kale and less astringent than spinach or chard. They may not be in your local stores yet, but check the farmer's market. If they sell sweet potatoes, they will either have the greens or can probably get them for you. Sauté, stir fry  or boil  as you would any fresh green or use raw in salads. The stems are tender, too. For a special treat, braise in unsweetened coconut milk, season to your taste and add a sprinkle of ginger. Serve as a side or over mashed sweet potato.

  DID YOU KNOW?

THE "R" MONTH RULE FOR EATING OYSTERS IS A MYTH!

A well known myth about oysters says that they should be eaten only during months that have an "R," - so from May to August they used to be off the menu. This guideline goes back hundreds of years and is rooted in a lack of reliable refrigeration and a need to allow oysters to reproduce during the summer months. New aquaculture technology, strict harvesting standards and modern refrigeration have debunked this myth and made oysters a delicacy to be enjoyed year-round. However, perhaps because so many people still believe in the "R" rule, they seem to be more plentiful in the stores around this time of year. For an easy and delicious way to prepare them, see our RECIPE OF THE WEEK below.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

SCALLOPED OYSTERS

This recipe of my Grandmother's is an easy and tasty way to prepare oysters. She usually served it for Thanksgiving as an extra side or as an entre for a light Sunday night supper with a salad.

(Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease an 8 x 8 casserole with butter or Pam spray.)

INGREDIENTS

1 pt. oysters
˝ cup milk
1 ˝ cup crushed saltine crackers
˝ cup melted butter
Salt & pepper to taste (Crackers are already salty, so you may want to omit salt.)

Paprika

DIRECTIONS

Drain oysters and reserve liquid. Combine milk and oyster liquid.

Alternate layers of crumbs, butter and oysters. Season with salt & pepper. (You can double the recipe and have more layers for more servings.) Pour enough milk and liquid to cover over all and let stand until absorbed. (Use more milk if needed.) Top with dry cracker crumbs, dot with butter and sprinkle with paprika. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Serves 4 - 6.
