Happy Thursday Flashers!
As Halloween approaches, we should see the economy begin to shift into gear. Halloween is second only to Christmas as the highest grossing holiday of the year. Can you believe that? So, in a way it is the start of the holiday spending season. Part of the reason for that is that about 93% of all kids in the U.S. are believed to participate in trick or treating. It costs a lot of money to provide enough "treats" for all those little princesses, witches, and superheroes. And just about that many kids begin planning their costumes a month or more in advance and those can get quite costly. More and more adults seem to be getting into the haunting spirit by dressing for the occasion as well. Then there are all those decorations to buy for the house. 'Pumpkin patches' seem to spring up all over town. The Pumpkin Village in the mall parking lot, next to the AMC Theatre, will open next Friday the 17th with hayrides, crafts, games, bounce houses and more. Nearly everyone will buy at least one pumpkin; be it a real pumpkin or an impostor. It's probably the only time that most people ever buy a real pumpkin. But, when you try the iced pumpkin bread recipe below you might have discovered another reason to purchase a fresh pumpkin. You can't think of a pumpkin without thinking of carving this pulpy, stringy, seedy over-grown squash. Our family has always enjoyed carving pumpkins, but do you know how the practice got started? It actually began with other vegetables. Making vegetable lanterns was a tradition of the British Isles, and carved-out turnips, beets, and potatoes were stuffed with coal, wood embers, or candles as impromptu lanterns to celebrate the fall harvest. There's a "spooky" story for the kids about the beginning of Jack o' lanterns in a post below. We also found some unique and fun uses for a pumpkin that we share with you in this issue! Enjoy browsing FLASH. We hope you find something fun to do from our calendar and that you will learn a fun fact or a tip that you won't know how you ever did without! Enjoy the rest of the week, FLASHERS and have a wonderful weekend hunting for the perfect pumpkin!

THE LEGEND OF THE JACK O' LANTERN
Jack O' lanterns are believed to have started from an old folk tale common in many European countries. In the Irish version it's about a man called Stingy Jack. Jack was a clever but lazy fellow who tricked the devil Satan into getting trapped in an apple tree. He releases Satan after making him promise that he will never take Jack's soul. When Jack's judgment day comes, thanks to the promise, he doesn't go to hell, but he wasn't good enough for heaven either. He's stuck in between, doomed to wander the earth in darkness. Jack complains to Satan about the constant dark, so Satan gives Jack an ember from hell to light his way. Now even a ghost can't carry a hot ember in his bare hand, so Jack improvised. He hollowed out his favorite vegetable, a turnip, to hold the light. Some people believe that Jack of the Lantern is still wandering on the darkest of nights holding his glowing turnip. No one knows how the turnip became a pumpkin, but since it's larger, maybe it was because it gives off more light.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics

Teeth Whitening, according to the FDA, is a safe and effective procedure for lightening the appearance of teeth. Whitening restores natural tooth color and bleaching whitens beyond the natural color. There are many methods available, such as brushing, bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel, and laser bleaching. Teeth whitening has become the most requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry today. More than 100 million Americans whiten their teeth one way or another each year.
Bleaching methods use carbamide peroxide which reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide has about a third of the strength of hydrogen peroxide. This means that a 15% solution of carbamide peroxide is the rough equivalent of a 5% solution of hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide oxidizing agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and breaks down stain deposits in the dentin. Power bleaching uses light to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental office.
Tooth bleaching is not a modern invention. Ancient Romans, for example, used urine and goat milk in an attempt to make and keep their teeth whiter.
At the Center for Facial Aesthetics we use Carbamide Peroxide in conjunction with blue LED light for the most effective treatment. A 45 minute session is only $60! Call for more information or to make an appointment (772) 589-8111. We'd love to help you smile so bright.

Plan Your Fall Garden!
If you love to garden or have always wanted to start a garden...This is a great website created by the University of Florida. It breaks the state up into regions so that your gardening to-do list is always appropriate.
|
|
FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
FOR YOUR GARDEN
Follow up on the gardening information above with these handy tips from Jeff Yeager, author of
Don't Throw That Away.
- The charcoal remnants in the bottom of your grill serve as an amazing fertilizer. Pulverize it (or new briquettes] with a hammer and work into the soil. It also decreases the soil's acidity and nourishes good bacteria to strengthen the plant's roots. Orchids and bromeliads also thrive in charcoal rich soil.
- Sprinkle leftover tea or coffee grounds directly on the soil to enrich it with nitrogen your plants will love. It makes great mulch!

WEEKEND PROJECT
Start creating your pumpkin embellishments! Instead of carving pumpkins consider painting your pumpkins in whatever color pallet you'd like. Create easy polka dots by sticking on round stickers before spray painting. You can create other patterns by finding other sticker shapes. You can also create spiders by using black pipe cleaners, candles by carving out just a portion of the top, give yourself a facial with this pumpkin facial mask, and finally you can use your pumpkin as a bowl for soup or stews and smaller pumpkins for dips. If you have ideas of your own...send them to us! We love hearing from our FLASHERS and you just mind find yourself in a future issue! :)

TOP 10 REASONS EVE WAS CREATED
This one is for the ladies, but don't worry guys, we'll have one for you next week!
10. God was worried that Adam would frequently become lost in the garden because he would not ask for directions.
9. God knew that one day Adam would require someone to locate and hand him the remote.
8. God knew Adam would never go out and buy himself a new fig leaf when his wore out and would therefore need Eve to buy one for him.
7. God knew Adam would never be able to make a doctor, dentist, or haircut appointment for himself.
6. God knew Adam would never remember which night to put the garbage on the curb.
5. God knew if the world was to be populated, men would never be able to handle the pain and discomfort of childbearing.
4. As the Keeper of the Garden, Adam would never remember where he left his tools.
3. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when God caught him hiding in the garden.
2. As the Bible says, It is not good for man to be alone!
And the #1 reason why God created Eve...
1. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back, scratched his head, and said, "I can do better than that!"

DID YOU KNOW?
THE LONGEST WORD IN THE DICTIONARY
No, much as we like the song and even if it were a real word, it's not supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
The longest word in Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged,is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis,
which has 45 letters. It's not nearly as nice as the one Mary Poppins invented because it's a disease of the lungs caused by inhaling very fine irritant particles. Miners are especially subject to the disease. Hmmmm....Now you know! :)

Carol Brown Goldberg carries on this "chromesthetic" tradition in her recent paintings, creating, in the words of one critic, "glorious color-saturated paintings that make us feel heavenly."
