"ON THE ROAD AGAIN..."

Once again I've been humming that Willie Nelson tune as I hit the road again. I do love my road trips, but this month I seem to be raising the bar even for myself. It began with meeting my husband in North Carolina where we were guests at what may well be the most beautiful and elaborate wedding we have ever attended. The reception was held under a huge white tent that was transformed into a wooded fairyland that truly sparkled from the shimmer of tea lights and candles. Plentiful greenery and magnificent arrangements displayed beautifully at every point that could possibly capture a glance. The tent poles were even disguised as large canopy trees entwined with white lights. It was a magical evening and an enchanting beginning for two very special young people beginning a life together.  Next stop Atlanta, where I helped cover a headboard with my daughter Allie. This is one of those projects that has been on the back-burner for over a year. Having never done this before we decided to finally bite the bullet and jump in. We of course had a few of those uproarious laughing spells that brought us both to tears before the project was completed.  I must say we were quite surprised at just how 'perfect' it turned out. Two days later I was in the car again heading to Greensboro, Georgia for a brief visit with daughter Lilly. Lilly works at the fabulous Ritz-Carlton resort there. The Ritz was my next destination where I had a mini-reunion with 6 of my best friends from high school. We all came from various points leaving behind our daily responsibilities to enjoy some very special time together. Being with those ladies just seemed to turn back the clock. For a brief time, we were teenagers  again who stayed up way too late telling stories and giggling, and I loved every minute of it. I returned to Vero last night, but will leave in the morning with my Mom for a weekend in Miami. I'm looking forward to seeing more old friends there, but I will hate missing so many of the fun events that will be going on here. Saturday offers a packed calendar which means you are going to have to make decisions! Hmmmm....What to do! It's free admission day on Saturday at the Museum of Art which means it is also Kids ArtShop. Trinity Episcopal is hosting their annual 'Fall Festival' and Amy Adams is the visiting author at the Vero Beach Book Center. Catch your breath before heading out Saturday night.  You can either head over to Ocean Drive for the free - always enjoyable - Sunset Concert or plan to go on Pelican Island's  Owl Prowl. There is also the  Jake Owen benefit Concert that is sure to entertain or take the family to the Trick or Treat Costume Skate at Skate Factory. See what I mean? Decisions! Those are just a few of the events.  Make sure to check out the calendar for a complete listing and get out there and ENJOY life... and your good friends!

  DID YOU KNOW?

It is simple to create a home scent simmer that will have your house smelling like William Sanoma. Try this.

Fill a small saucepan 2/3 full with water and add one sliced lemon, several sprigs of rosemary and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Let this simmer all day, adding water as necessary to create a wonderful home deodorizer.  You'll love it!

TRICK OR TREAT AT THE MALL

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

HALLOWEEN CHEESEBURGER PIE

Before you send your little goblins off for all those sweet treats, you might want to fill them up with something a little more healthy. Toss up a salad, fix up this fun pie from SOUTHERN LIVING magazine and create your traditional Halloween feast.

 INGREDIENTS
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, pressed
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated piecrusts
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
3 cups (12 ounces) shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided
2 tablespoons water
1 large egg
Red and yellow liquid food coloring

PREPARATION

  • Cook first 5 ingredients in a large skillet over medium-high heat, stirring until beef crumbles and is no longer pink; drain. Stir in ketchup and Worcestershire sauce; cool.
  • Unfold 1 piecrust, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Spread mustard evenly over crust. Stir together meat mixture and 2 cups cheese; spoon onto center of crust, leaving a 2-inch border.
  • Unfold remaining piecrust, and cut out a jack-o'-lantern face, reserving pastry cutouts to use as a stem. Place crust over meat mixture; crimp edges of crust, and fold under. Place stem on top of jack-o'-lantern face.
  • Whisk together 2 tablespoons water, egg, and 1 drop each of red and yellow food coloring; brush over crust.
  • Bake at 425° for 20 minutes; remove from oven, and brush again with egg mixture. Fill eyes, nose, and mouth with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake 5 to 10 more minutes or until golden brown.

Carol Brown Goldberg: Recent Works September 20, 2014 - January 4, 2015 Since the late 19th century, artists have often compared the use of design and color with the work of modern musical composers, with each form or hue corresponding to musical phrases and tones. Carol Brown Goldberg carries on this "chromesthetic" tradition in her recent paintings, creating, in the words of one critic, "glorious color-saturated paintings that make us feel heavenly."
