editor's note poka-dot

Happy Thursday Flashers!

There are only two weeks until Thanksgiving and 42 days 'til Christmas! Where has the year gone? It seems like it was a hop-skip and jump ago that we were filling FLASH with graduation ideas and summer vacation tips. Why is it time seems to go so much faster as we get older? Do you remember as a child how l-o-o-o-ng the school year seemed? It was F-O-R-E-V-E-R-!  Now a year slips away within a couple of weeks. You know what's funny though? The quicker it goes by the less I remember. The reels and reels of long movies that play over and over in my head from my childhood years are recalled with such exquisite detail and fondness. Those memories are a feast for the senses! They are depicted in  full color and I easily recall so many varied noises and sounds...mostly laughter and giggles. I even remember certain smells. So many memories ... as if it was yesterday. But, it wasn't yesterday and  for goodness sake, don't ask me about the 'real' yesterday because chances are I won't be able to recall much. Why the focus on this oddity? Because I absolutely LOVED my childhood! Every single second of it and I wish that every adult could have similar memories and my wish is that every child is busy creating such memories. That's where the true message of this editor's note comes into play.  I don't care how old you are or if you have children or not...this is the absolute perfect time of year to either continue a tradition or start one. If you have young children take the time to decide on the perfect tradition for your family and then get the date on your calendar for when you will carry out the tradition. If you don't have children or you have grown children...'borrow' one. There are plenty of opportunities through Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Youth Guidance or perhaps even a neighbor to create some very special moments for the youth in our community. If you need a couple of ideas make sure you check the post below. FLASHERS...Give the gift of memories ... there truly is no better gift!

ENJOY!

 METABOLISM MYTHS

Will drinking lots of water boost your metabolism? According to this report from Everyday Health, the answer is no. This is just one of several myths that
claim to help burn calories by boosting your metabolism. You can read about some of the others by following our link, but the site claims that the only thing proven to work is to increase lean muscle mass through strength training and cardio exercise. FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics

Why Should I Layer Skin Care Products?

Layering your skin care serves one major purpose: To give you the best results possible. When you layer your skin care, you are giving your skin a substantial hydration, moisture and collagen boost. When the products are layered correctly, your skin is better able to absorb each product, thus allowing each product to perform its function in an effective manner.

Why Is It Important To Layer My Skin Care In A Specific Way?

The importance of which product to apply to your skin is key in how your skin responds. If your skin care products are not layered correctly, then they cannot effectively reach the layers of skin for which were intended to reach. For example, you should not apply a moisturizer and then follow that up by using a product that exfoliates. While exfoliating your skin is very important for removing the top layer of cellular buildup, exfoliating away your moisturizer does not give it the chance to do its job. At the Center for Facial Aesthetics inside Monnett Eye Center we can help you learn which products are right for your skin and how to use them most effectively.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Cinnamon Scented Pine-cones
Fall is the perfect time to use nature's gifts to create something wonderful. Pine cones can be used for all sorts of things. I love the drop-swag pictured here that is easily created by wiring the pine cones to a burlap bow. Envision it flat and it would make a nice table runner for Thanksgiving.  You've awakened the sense of site with this project but why not the sense of smell too? Purchase your favorite scent oil: Christmas, cinnamon, or clove.  Pour some in a small spray bottle with just a bit of water. Spray your pine cones with the oil and then place in a sealed zip lock for a minimum of 24 hrs. Seventy-two hours is preferred. After allotted time your pine cones will be ready to use in your holiday projects.   Enjoy!

  DID YOU KNOW?

REAL BOOKS ARE BETTER FOR THE BRAIN

Reading has long been known to reduce stress, improve well-being, and help keep the brain sharp. But recent research has found that reading a physical, printed book offers brain benefits over reading on an e-reader like a Kindle. For example, book readers retain more of what they've read and experience fewer distractions. Click here for the research details.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

KALE SALAD .... SO GOOD!

In a surprising twist, Tuscan kale is served raw-and makes for a substantial and satisfying winter salad. Be sure to choose bunches of Tuscan kale with small leaves, which are more tender.
ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons dried currants
  • 7 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon unseasoned rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 bunches Tuscan kale (about 1 pound), center ribs and stems removed, leaves thinly sliced crosswise
  • 2 tablespoons pine nuts, lightly toasted
  • Parmesan cheese shavings
preparation

Place currants in small bowl; add 5 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar. Let soak overnight. Drain currants.

Whisk remaining 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, honey, oil, and salt in large bowl. Add kale, currants, and pine nuts; toss to coat. Let marinate 20 minutes at room temperature, tossing occasionally. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle cheese shavings over salad and serve.

SCENE AROUND TOWN

Maureen Campeau, a program coordinator for the Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition, recently spoke before the Exchange Club of the Treasure Coast about "Safe Sleep Practices for Babies."

The Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition believes in giving infants an equal start in life by providing gifts to new parents through their TLC Newborn program. TLC Newborn presents every baby visited at Indian River Medical Center with a onesie inscribed "This Side Up" on the front to remind parents and other caregivers to put babies on their "backs to sleep" helping to reduce the number of sudden, unexpected infant deaths in Indian River County. A "Baby's First Book" is also provided to new families through a grant from Quail Valley Charities.  Ms. Campeau shared this and other important information about the TLC Newborn Program that would benefit the club's members and their families.

    The Elks Honor Our Veterans

On November 1st, the Sebastian Elks honored our veterans with a sold-out evening of music, games, dinner and entertainment. The General Federation of Women Association (GFWA) played the anthems from all of the armed services.  When the veterans heard 'their' anthem, they stood and sang along.  Then our National Anthem was played and brought tears to many eyes.  The Navy JROTC from Sebastian River High School served the veterans and their guests a delicious dinner prepared by Past Exalted Ruler Jim O'Neill and other elks. The dinner was followed by a "USO" show  performed by Debbi Hanford and her band of entertainers. The Elks enjoyed a remarkable patriotic evening that honored our veterans!

JOHN CARROLL STUDENTS PARTNER WITH HABITAT

Indian River Habitat for Humanity was fortunate again this year to partner with approximately 150 junior and senior John Carroll High School students in the building of a Habitat home in Grace Meadows Subdivision, Fellsmere, Florida.  As part of their student curriculum, John Carroll High School students commit volunteer hours annually to worthwhile community service projects.

The students started working with Habitat twice a week on September 16 and completed the portion of their project on November 4.   The students have worked hard.  Many are quite skilled as this will be the fourth year they have volunteered to help Indian River Habitat build homes. If you would like to volunteer or for more information, visit  www.irchabitat.org or call Human Resource Manager Lori Tomlinson at
