'Tis the season to be thankful, Flashers!

With the holidays quickly approaching it won't be long before our world is filled with the joyous sounds of holiday music. Many of the oh-so- familiar carols we will be singing along with are truly timeless. They literally ring in the holiday season and I dare say that without them our holidays would seem much less 'merry!' Bing Cosby is one of the 'golden' recording artists and h
e was the first to record the song, I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas. It's usually his version that the D.J.s still play during the holidays. Another of his hits was a song my Mom likes called Count Your Blessings. She says she's not as good as Bing, but somehow
her rendition is actually sweeter to my ears. It epitomizes the essence of who she is and the message is one that I am so thankful she has passed on to me.

  "Count your blessings

When you can't sleep.

Count your blessings

Instead of sheep

And you'll fall asleep

Counting your blessings,"

Have you counted your blessings lately, Flashers? Isn't it nice that we have a holiday each year that reminds us to do just that? The current issue of Reader's Digest reports on a study that was done where people were asked to either jot down what they were thankful for in their life each week, what had annoyed them or what they were neutral about. It was found that those who expressed their thanks were more optimistic, exercised more and even had fewer visits to the doctor than those who were more negative. So... Do you see the glass as 'half full' or 'half empty'? If you're feeling a little down, try following the advice of the song lyrics. Fill your glass with some positive thoughts and top it off with some fun experiences. You'll soon find that you will be counting your blessings all year long rather than just at Thanksgiving.

We are heading into the 'busy' time of year when our event calendar begins to bubble over. This week's issue is packed with all sorts of fun things that you might want to get on your personal calendar. The Festival of Trees is this weekend at Riverside Theatre. What a fun way to kick-off the holidays here in Vero.  This year's theme is 'Storybook Forest'. FLASH has decorated a tree titled 'Once Upon A Time'. We have captured the theme with miniature Madame Alexander character dolls ... turned ornaments, mini books and a couple of dozen hand-made ornaments that depict a favorite phrase from some of the most beloved children's books. Pictured here is one of our hand-made ornaments. Make sure you stop by the Festival of  Trees, check out our tree, visit with Santa, Enjoy the gingerbread house display and leave counting your blessings!

FYI...One of my counted blessings is our FLASH subscribers! It's hard to believe that we will soon be coming up on our 5th year and that we've grown to over 6,2000 subscribers. Now that's something to be thankful for! :)  Keep FLASHING ... FLASHERS and keep spreading the word!  We do greatly appreciate you!

Thank you sooooo much!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics

DO YOU HAVE OILY SKIN?

Anyone struggling with greasy, shiny, oily skin might argue that the mere existence of sebum (the medical term for skin oils) is a curse. Oily Skin has an abundance of oils; the skin feels thicker and has enlarged and clogged pores. Often people with oily skin think they must use harsh products like alcohol on their face to get rid of oil production. In fact, this makes things worse. The skin produces more oil to counter act the dryness. To cleanse oily skin, salicylic acid and buffered glycolic acid cleansers work well to dissolve heavier fatty surface oils to get rid of the greasiness and shine effectively. Proper skincare and monthly deep cleansing facials is the key to turning skin from greasy, clogged and shiny, to a face with a healthy clean radiant complexion.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
MAKE ROOM FOR THE TURKEY

If you're the chef for Thanksgiving, the REAL SIMPLE

website has some good tips for you. First it suggests that you clean the refrigerator before you go shopping. Nothing is worse than coming in with a load of groceries and no place to put them. Clean out those unidentifiable leftovers and expired condiments. This week use up as much as possible of what's in the freezer and the refrigerator. You can store hearty produce, like apples, oranges and fresh cranberries in a cool, dry place in the house. And I especially like this tip: You can use a beach cooler for the turkey, casseroles, dips, and other foods that must stay chilled. Filled with ice or frozen gel packs, a cooler will keep food fresh for at least 24 hours. (Place a thermometer inside and make sure it stays below 40 F.) THINGS TO KNOW

Acai: Pronounced "ah-sah-ee." Now you know. It is a purple berry that is really good for you. You can find it in juices, yogurts, and bowls at the juice place. It is revered as a great vitamin source that can give you glowing skin and might make you live forever...you never know! :)

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

 OVERNIGHT HERB ROLLS

Crispy on the outside, pillowy inside, and suffused with fresh parsley, dill, chives and rosemary for an herbal blast. These aren't rolls that you put out just to have something on the side. No, these are rolls with personality that you remember.

The recipe for "Overnight Herb Rolls" is from Chef Bradley Ogden, a pioneer in contemporary American cooking.

(Makes 12 rolls)

1 tablespoon active dry yeast

3 tablespoons sugar

1 teaspoon table salt

1 tablespoon EACH minced flat-leaf parsley, dill,  chives and rosemary leaves

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 egg plus 1 tablespoon lightly beaten egg

1 cup milk or half-and-half

3 1/4 cups flour

1 tablespoon kosher salt

In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over 1/4 cup cool (70-degree) water. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in sugar, table salt, herbs, butter, whole egg, and milk; add flour and stir just until moistened.

Knead dough on a lightly floured work surface until elastic and not sticky, about 15 minutes; add flour as needed to prevent sticking. Shape into 12 equal-size balls and transfer to a well-buttered 9-by-13-inch baking pan

Let dough rise in a warm (about 80 degrees) place, covered loosely with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel, until doubled, 45 t0 90 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake until deep golden, 25 to 30 minutes.

Make Ahead: Once you shape the balls and place them in the buttered baking pan, you can wrap the pan airtight and chill for up to 1 day (do not let rise before chilling). The next day, allow dough to rise on the countertop. Because the dough is so cold, it may take up to 2 hours for the dough to rise. Once it has doubled in size, proceed with the rest of the baking directions above.
