HAPPY THANKSGIVING, FLASHERS!

We are sending out this week's abridged issue a couple of days early so that our FLASHERS still have a window of time to incorporate any of the suggestions that you might take a fancy to in this issue. Our family is also heading to Georgia this afternoon to gather with family and I will be busy cooking and baking on Wednesday evening instead of tied to the computer. I just love this holiday that brings us together without the craziness of a shopping frenzy...A cooking frenzy...YES! But I do prefer that to a shopping frenzy. You won't find the usual 'Weekend Project' in this issue. Your 'project' this weekend is to do nothing! Sit back, relax, enjoy your family and friends, maybe take a nap or watch one or two of the many football games that will be broadcast this weekend. (You will find the schedules in a post below.) Of course, you may want to get up early on "Black Friday" to be one of the first to get in line for the sales. They promise to be rewarding if you can fight all the crowds! If not, Cyber Monday follows the weekend and it's reported to be the largest shopping day on the web. 

 

As I mentioned, our family will be back at our farm in Georgia. We usually have the Macy's Christmas parade on in the background while we prepare the meal, and we each have our assigned dishes: My husband's cornbread stuffing, Sister Suzy's layered salad and Mom's gravy and green beans. Daughter Lilly and I love listening to the pop of the cranberries as we make our fresh cranberry sauce. Both daughters will help me prepare the mashed potatoes, the sweet potatoes with pecan topping and the yellow squash casserole. Everyone helps with the desserts, and that includes shelling the pecans that come from the trees that grow on the farm. I'm sure you know how cold it's been in Georgia, so our son Will is in charge of bringing in the logs  and keeping the fire burning. While he gathers the wood the gals will go on a hunt for treasures of berries, greenery, pine-cones, wild flowers and more from the yard that we will enjoy transforming into a spectacular...yet simple...centerpiece. Last year's was so fresh that one of our neighbors who joined us commented on its 'freshness' as the ladybugs began to emerge. William will finally carve the turkey as we gather around the table to give our thanks and share our feast...lucky and thankful to all be together!

It's not to late too plan for those little touches that will transform your celebration into a display of warmth and thanksgiving! Below are the 'how-to' simple instructions that will ease and guide you into the 'hostess with the mostest! :)
#1 - Cylinder vases are the perfect vessel for these floating candles and twigs.
#2 - This rosemary wreath is created by wiring a twig of spice that is tied with a string 
        bow. It is converted into the  ideal place card by printing out name tags that are 
        glued to the wreath. Oh...and it will smell so good! 
#3 - Spiced orange pomander balls are fun, decorative, aromatic and easy to make.

#4 - This hanging pine-cone wreath is created with strips of ribbon that are glued to 
       pine-cones with a touch of greenery and gathered together with a bow.
#5 - Artificial or authentic pumpkins can emit the sentiment of the holiday. You can 
       print out your message in a font of your choice and transfer it to your pumpkin 
       with a sheet of carbon paper. Then just use a permanent marker to bring it to life!
#6 - This burlap garland is created with squares of fabric that have been stenciled 
       with a personalized message. Secure it to rope or twine with hot glue.
#7 - These miniature illuminated pumpkins add some fun and whimsy to a 
       tabletop centerpiece. Cut a round opening large enough to insert a small votive 
       and clean out the pumpkin. You can either drill small holes in your pumpkin or 
       use a phillips screwdriver to puncture the holes that will shine bright when 
       candle is lit.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

I stopped by Something Special yesterday to drop off the
December Community Calendar. I happened to pop by at just the perfect moment because I loved what Kathy was creating! One of their customers dropped off several small antique juice glasses that belonged to her grandmother. She asked that they be used as vases for small arrangements that she will display on the table runner on her Thanksgiving table. Her goal was to have a
'piece of her grandmother' present at Thanksgiving Dinner. If you have an affection for family history and heirlooms, you undoubtedly have a few items stashed away that can be incorporated into your celebration. Be creative and include a connection that will diminish the barriers of time!
 

HOLIDAY DELIVERIES

ABC News had a recent warning about package deliveries. Apparently, thieves are watching for delivery drop offs at the doors of homes and apartments. If no one comes to answer the doorbell after the package is left, the thief makes a quick pick-up. Several thieves have been caught by security cameras. So, you might want to consider having your package delivered to your workplace or to a friend or relative who will be around to receive the package or who may live in a more secure location.

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Thanksgiving is one of those holidays when everyone seems to overeat. The experts say that just one Thanksgiving meal can dish up as many as 3,000 calories! The solution is portion control. The HEALTH page of the Time, Inc. website suggests serving yourself a small, golf-ball-size serving of everything you want---no restrictions---but have only enough to satisfy your stomach without overdoing it. Remember, Thanksgiving is just one day. Done right, you won't set yourself back too far!

MARTHA STEWART'S PEANUT BUTTER ICING

This easy icing is delicious! You may want to try it  for your holiday baking on a chocolate cake or cupcakes, or even cookies. The recipe makes about 3 cups.

 

 Ingredients

  • 6 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter (not natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream 
  •   
Directions
 Beat cream cheese and confectioners' sugar with a mixer on medium speed. Add salt, then peanut butter, then vanilla. Whisk cream until soft peaks form, and then fold into peanut butter mixture. Use immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. (Bring to room temperature, and beat on low speed until smooth before using.)
 

 

 

SCENE AROUND TOWN
Celebrations, family fun and laughter were in the air at the Homeless Family Center Open House that was held November 19.  Local dignitaries and community members were present at the ribbon cutting for the new Education Center at the HFC campus and to tour the remodeled facility and the newly expanded A Second Chance Thrift Store and Training Center.  There were information booths, a bounce house, an ice cream truck, a cookout, face painting and a variety of games for the children.  All of these activities happened during an important time of the year, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 16-22), a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Wed Dec 10 OSLS: Dive Into the Story: Ocean Science Fun for All Ages. Ellen Prager, Marine Scientist and Author. 7pm Johnson Education Center Dr. Ellen Prager will share some of her favorite ocean science stories and give the audience a peek into her new fiction series, Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians. She'll discuss how she is integrating real-life adventures, geography, and science into fiction and share a first look at the upcoming action packed sequel, which highlights the British Virgin Islands. The Shark Whisperer is the first book in the series and will be available for sale after the lecture, and Dr. Prager will be available to sign books. Free event
