editor's note poka-dot

Hello FLASHERS~

Surprise!  I know I said we were taking the week off. But, the truth be known...I forgot to include the Thanksgiving Eve service at St. Paul's last week and that has led me to create what was going to be an abridged version of FLASH this week. However, it looks like we have practically a full issue. So, instead of an abridged issue, you are receiving an abridged Editor's Note.  Less is more this week... Have a wonderful Thanksgiving FLASHERS!  I hope you have a chance to enjoy family and friends! If you do not have family or friends in town, consider helping at one of our local shelters. I strongly believe that we are happiest when helping others! :)

HAPPY CHANUKAH TO OUR JEWISH FRIENDS!

Nov. 27th - Dec. 5th

This year the first day of Chanukah begins on Thanksgiving. The last time this happened was in 1888 and won't happen again for another 77,798 years. Chanukah -- the eight-day festival of light that begins on the eve of the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev-- celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality. We enjoyed perusing the website below to familiarize ourselves with the history and traditions of Chanukah. It also has suggestions for celebrations and some wonderful recipes! CLICK HERE  If you prefer to go directly to a list of FAQ's to gain some knowledge... click here

THE NEW 'WORD OF THE YEAR'

Each year in November Oxford Dictionary selects a new word of the year. This year's word Selfie was named as word of the year on Nov. 19th.

Selfie, (Noun) means: a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. The word has evolved from a niche social media tag into a mainstream term for a self-portrait photograph.

Other shortlisted words included twerk- a raunchy dance move performed by Miley Cyrus - and binge-watch - meaning watching lots of TV. Schmeat, meaning a form of meat synthetically produced from biological tissue, was also a contender. Want to know more?  Click Here
