OCTOBER MUSINGS
Hi, Flashers. Have you noticed our mornings are getting cooler? I hope you have enjoyed the hint of a weather change as much as I have. If you want two other reasons to love October look no further. The month of October is also "National Pizza Month" and "Cookie Month,"...as if we needed an excuse to indulge! ...But thanks, we'll take it.
By now you have probably heard that October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." It's a good reminder for FLASHERS to make sure that you're up-to-date on your mammograms. We have all heard it before ... early detection is key! The U.S. Department of Health recommends that women ages 50 - 74 get a mammogram every two years. (Younger women should check with their doctors to see if they should get one depending on their personal history.)
After you schedule your mammogram, take a peek at the calendar at the bottom of the newsletter. The next two weeks are packed with fun events! To get in the festive Halloween mood make sure to stop by the 'Howel-O-Ween Pawrade and Pet Expo' this Saturday. Seeing our 4 legged friends in costume...well...just imagine! It will be worth stopping by for sure. Then head over to VB High School for the Crown Jewel Marching Band Festival. Stop by our booth. We enjoy meeting our FLASHERS and you will certainly enjoy the performances. Riverside Children's Theatre's Haunted House opens tomorrow, Friday night (6:00-9:30) and Sat. (5:00 - 9:30). Proceed with caution for a scary fun time! There will be less scary adventures each night before 7:00 p.m. Lastly, there are quite a few featured posts this week that spotlight some upcoming events. Please take some extra time to look them over and support their causes. They are all fabulous. I am constantly receiving feedback from agencies letting me know how supportive our FLASHERS are! Thanks for that and Keep it up!
Enjoy your world FLASHERS!

HEALTH TIP
BEST MEMORY BOOSTER!
Researchers at the University of Alabama have found that a main cause of brain fog, memory lapses and stroke is a lack of sleep. While you're sleeping, your body is busy storing memories, repairing damaged blood vessels and protecting itself from dangerous blood clots. The rest of your days might just depend on the 'rest' of your nights!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
.
A man was walking past a field one day when he noticed a scarecrow. But then, to his surprise, he realized it was the farmer himself just standing still in the middle of the field. "Excuse me, sir, but why are you just standing there?" "I'm trying to win a Nobel Prize," the farmer replied. "I heard that they give prizes to people who are 'out standing' in their fields!" |

"BIBLICAL GARDENS" SPROUT IN VERO BEACH
On a sunny September day in Vero Beach, Rabbi Michael Birnholz of Temple Beth Shalom and Rev. Scott Alexander of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship knelt together and planted an olive tree at the church on 27th Avenue and 16th Street.
The Rabbi suggested the olive tree planting as part of an "Olive Trees of Fellowship" project he has initiated. "Just as the olive branch was a symbol of partnership between Noah and the Dove in Genesis," he said, "I'm hoping this project
will connect religious communities in powerful ways."

I WANT TO WATCH MY GARDEN GROW
FROM MELANIE SMITH:
Hi, I'm new to Vero and looking for free outdoor plants you no longer want in your yard or need to thin out your plants and share them instead of throwing them away. I can bring my shovel and dig up what you no longer want or have too much of. Need shade and sun loving plants to create my gardens. So sad to see landscapers hauling off perfectly good plants and shrubs. If you are looking to share, please email me by replying above and let me know what you'd like to share. I'll come and do the work and leave you with many thanks for saving and sharing to help create a new garden. Thanks, Melanie!

Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
