START YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING

WHILE HELPING THE HOMELESS

Maybe you have already started your holiday shopping, but if you haven't, it might just be the perfect time and opportunity to begin. This is especially true for our Jewish friends. Hanukah begins at sundown on Wednesday, the 27th and for the first time since 1888, the first full day of the Hanukah celebration falls the following day on Thanksgiving.

A couple of months ago I was asked by the Neda Heeter if I would agree to be one of ten artist to repurpose an item from the Second Chance Thrift Store. The items would be auctioned off and all of the proceeds will benefit the Homeless Family Center. I was honored to be asked and eager to participate. This weekend the Thrift to Treasure LIVE auction will take place. You can participate and bid online at the Vero Beach Auction website or at the LIVE auction on the 16th at 3pm. To the right is a picture of the mirror that I transformed from a thrift to a treasure, as well as a sreen divider created by artist Ginny Piech Street. If you click here to go to the auction site, all astute FLASHERS will notice that Ginny has a bid on her item and well... I don't. Enough said? Oh...maybe not. :) Indulge me... One bid, FLASHERS. That's it. One bid is all it takes to get the ball rolling! I'm not sure where that ball will end, but let's push it off the ledge! There are eight other items as well that will benefit the Center. The auction has quite a few other items. Start your shopping now and ask yourself...Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who's your new owner? Who pushed the ball?

Have a great weekend FLASHERS. Make sure you stop by the Nature expo at Maitland Farm and the Rummage Sale at St. Eds where you have a great chance of finding even more treasures!

Enjoy!

PAULINE ADAMS

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Pauline Adams, owner of I'll Never Tell Jewelry on Ocean Drive, has a heart for the troops.  In fact, she has such a heart that in just two years, she raised $20,000 for the Military Moms Prayer Group through the sale of "Braveheart Pins," a red-white-and-blue crystal encrusted, heart-shaped pin that she sells for $12.  All proceeds benefit the prayer group.  One woman ordered 100 for  4th of July party; another ordered 200 to give as gifts at a party she threw for her grandson, who was being deployed.  Pauline is so excited by the outpouring of community support for her pin-project that she's found another way to benefit the prayer group's outreach efforts:  hand-painted, patriotic ornaments, adorned with flags and Sworovski crystal.

Pauline is the wife of a Vietnam Vet and the mother of two sons who served in the military. One served in the Marine Corps and the other in the Navy.   She comes from a long line of military men -- and helping the troops through the prayer group's gift-box package drives is her way of giving back.

"These ornaments and pins are a simple way to say thank you to   our courageous servicemen and women," says Pauline. "They are the true 'brave hearts' who keep our country safe.

Pauline, thank you for your efforts to support those who support and fight for our many freedoms! FLASH wishes you a year to break all past records and encourages everyone to stop by for a pin or an ornament! Also, click here for pick up locations for the gift-box packages.

LOOK WHO'S RETURNING TO TV!

Bill Cosby announced this week that he is working on a new family series for television that parents can watch with their kids.  He stated that it won't be like the old Cosby show, but will reflect the same values of love and  respect between parents and (this time; their adult children, told with his wonderful comedic style. Thanks, Bill. It's about time someone cleaned up TV's act! We'll look forward to it.

  blood pressure  UNDERSTANDING BLOOD PRESSURE

What Is Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure?

The blood pressure reading is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is written as systolic pressure (upper #), the force of the blood against the artery walls as your heart beats, over diastolic pressure (lower #), the blood pressure between heartbeats. For example, a blood pressure reading is written as 120/80 mmHg, or "120 over 80". The systolic pressure is 120 and the diastolic pressure is 80.

What Is a Normal Blood Pressure?

The Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure has classified blood pressure measurements into several categories:

  •  Normal blood pressure is systolic pressure less than 120 and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg.
  • "Prehypertension" is systolic pressure of 120-139 or diastolic pressure of 80-89 mmHg.
  •  Stage 1 Hypertension is blood pressure greater than systolic pressure of 140-159 or diastolic pressure of 90-99 mmHg or greater.
  • Stage 2 Hypertension is systolic pressure of 160 or greater or diastolic pressure of 100 or greater.

Which number is more important, top (systolic) or bottom (diastolic)?

Typically more attention is given to the top number (the systolic blood pressure) as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease for people over 50 years old. In most people, systolic blood pressure rises steadily with age due to increasing stiffness of large arteries, long-term build-up of plaque, and increased incidence of cardiac and vascular disease.

To help lower your blood pressure naturally by activity and diet, follow the steps on this fun video. Click Here

GOOD NEWS/ BAD NEWS

The good news: According to a University of Michigan study in 2012, teen smoking has been steadily declining. Down from 18.7 % in 2011, only 17.1% of U.S. teens reported smoking tobacco within the past 30 days at the time of the study.  The bad news: Teen use of marijuana remained about the same with 22.9% of high school seniors saying they had smoked 'pot' in the past 30 days. More bad news: In the same study, 40% of the seniors admitted to drinking alcohol in the past month. This study is sponsored by a grant from The National Institute of Health and is done annually by surveying about 50,000 students in 400 secondary schools.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A man was going up to bed, when his wife told him he'd left the light on in the garden shed - she could see it from the bedroom window. But he said that he hadn't been in the shed that day. He looked himself, and there were people in the shed, stealing things.

He rang the police, but they told him that no-one was in his area, so no-one was available to catch the thieves. He said ok, hung up, counted to 30 and rang the police again.

"Hello. I just rang you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed? Well, you don't have to worry about them now, I've just shot them all."

Within five minutes there were half a dozen police cars in the area, an Armed Response unit, the works. Of course, they caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to this man: "I thought you said you'd shot them!"

He replied: "I thought you said there was no-one available!"

 KICK THE SUGAR HABIT!

Can't seem to stay away from the sweet stuff? As we head into the holidays, it's going to be even harder. Here's the reason why. When you eat sugar, it stimulates the release of dopamine in your brain, which makes you feel pleasure. The brain recognizes and likes this feeling and begins to crave more. It may startle you to learn that heroin, morphine and sugar all stimulate the same receptors in your brain. Here, Dr. Oz reveals easy ways to kick your sugar habit.

Chromium
Chromium plays an important role in insulin's regulation of blood glucose, and plays a role in energy production. Chromium prevents the spikes and dips of blood sugar. Take 200 mcg once a day at the start of any meal to prevent the sugar surges that often leave you reaching for more sugar later.

Add Fruit to Your Meals
By adding naturally sweet stuff to your meals, like healthy whole and dried fruit, you can trick your taste buds into thinking they're getting sweets - shutting down cravings before you reach for dessert. Try adding a spoonful of natural cranberry jam to your turkey sandwiches at lunchtime.  You can even throw a handful of raisins into your rice. Use your imagination!

Dr. Oz's Half-and-Half Rule
If most of your sugar comes from drinks like soda and juice, dilute it with a half a cup of seltzer. This will immediately reduce your sugar intake by half! Continue to reduce the amount of the sugary drinks you consume as you go and, soon, you won't even miss them.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Combo
This tasty duo will satisfy even the most voracious sweet tooth. Melt a bar of dark chocolate and mix it into a jar of organic peanut butter. Leave it in the fridge so that it cools and the flavors blend. When a sugar craving strikes, have a spoon. One spoonful has 4.5 grams of sugar. Compare this to your average brownie with a whopping 30 grams of sugar, and you're well on your way to shaking your sugar habit in healthy ways you never thought possible!

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

You don't have to be celebrating Hanukah to enjoy this delicious Jewish treat!

World's Fastest Potato Latkes
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes

1 package (30 ounces) frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed *
1 cups finely chopped onion (about 2 medium)
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
 teaspoon pepper
Vegetable oil

In large bowl, combine all ingredients except oil; mix well.  In large cast-iron or heavy nonstick skillet, heat 1/4 inch oil over medium heat until hot.   Drop 1/2-cup portions of potato mixture into skillet, flattening with a spatula to form 6-inch pancakes.  Cook until golden brown, about 10 minutes, turning once.

Drain on paper towels; serve hot with applesauce and sour cream.
Makes 12 (6-inch) pancakes

*Once the potatoes thaw, gently squeeze a handful of potatoes at a time to remove excess moisture.

SCENE AROUND TOWN
Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) is proud to assist with the Coastal Conservation Association's Oyster Restoration
Project. "A single oyster can filter 50 gallons of water per day to remove bacteria and toxins
from our Lagoon waters," explained Paul Dritenbas, as he discussed the environmental  environmental problems facing the Indian River Lagoon.

At the VBPS monthly meeting, Mr. Dritenbas spoke about the Lagoon Oyster Restoration Project and explained how the VBPS can participate. He demonstrated how the oyster mats are made and used in the lagoon to restore and build oyster beds. The oyster shells, after being cleaned and sanitized, are tied on to 16" squares of polypropylene netting. These nets are put into the water in March of each year and the resident oysters in the lagoon release larvae, called spat, in April, which attach to the oyster shells and continue growing. The oysters will clarify the water so light can hit the seagrass. Sea grasses to the north of the Barber Bridge have suddenly disappeared. The oyster reefs also function as wave breaks and offer shoreline protection from erosion.

Benefactor underwrites Emerson Center's
"Dreamers & Schemers"

THURSDAY, NOV 27TH
7:00 PM
Emerson Center
~ 1590 27th Avenue

An anonymous benefactor has stepped up and "bought the house" for The Emerson Center's November 21 performance of "Dreamers & Schemers," hoping to make it possible for everyone to attend this informative and entertaining event.

"Dreamers & Schemers" is a dramatic presentation that introduces the audience to three of Florida's most notable characters - Henry Flagler, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.  For this performance, distinguished actors appear onstage in full costume and speak "in the voice" of the historical figures they are portraying.  The performers reveal each character's visions for Florida's future and their opinions about who should control its bountiful resources.

In underwriting this performance, the anonymous benefactor was touched by a belief that this show would both inform and entertain people of the Treasure Coast - especially area children who "will define Florida's future based on their understanding of its past."

While the show is free, seating is limited and available on a first-come-first-served basis. Those who have already purchased tickets for this event are asked to visit the venue's box office and receive their refunds.

Further information about this and other events at The Emerson Center is available from their website or by calling the box office at 772-778-5249.

"Dreamers & Schemers" has been organized by the Florida Humanities Council, co-sponsors with Marine Bank and Trust of The Emerson Center's highly popular Florida Humanities Series.
CONGRATS TO ORCHID ISLAND
GOLF & BEACH CLUB

Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club was recently awarded with the Distinguished Emerald Club of the World designation from BoardRoom Magazine, one of the most respected trade publications serving private clubs. To be a Distinguished Emerald Club is to be one of a very select group of private clubs that have been recognized as providing not only an absolutely excellent Member Experience, but also a Member Experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world. This distinction is nuanced, yet thoroughly recognizable, for it is based on the most important of all intangible qualities. Reputation. Reverence. Admiration. Brand Equity. Fame. Whatever you call it, it is that "X" factor that separates two clubs that both provide superlative Member Experience, but where one is a great club, while the other is the most prestigious of memberships.

The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp."
