Vero Beach, Fl - Ed. 12.12.2013

Hello FLASHERS,

I just got back in town on Tuesday night from our Thanksgiving in Georgia. It's hard to adjust to the fact that by extending our time in Georgia to enjoy Mercer University's annual Author's Day Luncheon that I now find myself nearly half way through December and only 12 days til Christmas. YIKES!

So, what words of wisdom do I have for FLASHERS who, like me, might be feeling a little stressed? Here's the list....Don't fret the small stuff, don't get bogged down trying to make everything so perfect that you don't allow yourself to enjoy the moment, listen to Christmas Carols, remember the miracle of the season, pay close attention to children and see the wonder that fills their hearts...it's contagious,  conduct a random act of kindness, and write a note to someone special telling them how much they mean to you and how they have impacted your life. Imagine the impact that will have over the time spent on some of the frivolous things we stress over this time of year.

Here's another tip to help you keep some jingle in your pocket. Have you ever noticed how many thrift shops we have in Vero Beach? Why not include them in your Christmas shopping trips. Much of the merchandise is in 'like new' condition. Recently I purchased an antique, hand painted vase that will make the perfect gift for a friend. I also found a pretty punch bowl that would be ideal for serving eggnog, and a two-plate tiered china server that will make a lovely gift filled with Christmas cookies. You can also find gently used toys, books and games, and be sure to check out the fashions for yourself and your family. My niece found a Vera Wang formal gown for only $25. An extra bonus is that by shopping the thrift shops you will be supporting one of our local charities! It's a definite WIN - WIN!!! So jingle through the coming week, FLASHERS...Stay merry...be kind to each other and take time to brighten the holiday for someone who is going through a difficult time. That's where you will find the magic of this special and holy season!

Due to expressed interest, we have extended the purchase  of this deal until Dec. 16th. See what a fellow FLASHER has to say below...
Hi Valerie - Re the computer repair offer in a recent FLASH, I  just want you to know the very modest price Bob Krienke charges for it was a real bargain.  He was at my house today, and he had that lazy computer humming in less than the hour he had allotted.  Not only was he a terrific computer guy, he was utterly charming, and it was a pleasure to have him here.  I hope I won't need any more 'fixes' but I'll surely call him if I do, and in the meantime I'll be passing his name on to other senior friends who, like me, need computer help but who are sometimes leery about letting strangers into our homes.  I love getting the FLASH and always enjoy it.  I'm a real fan.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

Although fruitcake has come to be known as a traditional Christmas treat, many people don't care for it, including the late Johnny Carson.  He once made this observation on his late night show.

"There is only one fruitcake in the entire world and people keep sending it to each other."

  xmas tree DID YOU KNOW?

THE HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

In the English-speaking world, the union of gifts, trees, and Christmas was due to the influence of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, a native of Saxony (now part of Germany). German immigrants brought the custom of Christmas trees with them in the early 1800s, but it spread widely after Victoria and Albert set up an elaborate tree for their children at Windsor Castle in 1841. At this point, Christmas presents were usually hung on the tree itself. Now you know! :)

RWA CHRISTMAS HOUSE 2013 A SPECTACULAR HOLIDAY EVENT

Beginning with a premier VIP Kickoff party Friday evening, December 6, Republican Women Aware (RWA) of Indian River County held it's 28th annual RWA Christmas House in Grand Harbor St. Andrews Island. The new president of RWA for 2014, Elaine Bath, said she is already planning next year's event which will be kicked off with a Christmas in July Designer Gala." Look for RWA to continue to take it up a notch each year," Bath said.

Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
