I hope each and every FLASHER who celebrates Christmas enjoyed a wonderful day this past Wednesday! The birth of our Savior certainly is a genuine and miraculous reason to celebrate!
My wish for 2014 is that we will carry a bit of that joy and goodwill with us all year long! I always consider the new year one of the best gifts on the tail end of a season filled with gift giving. It's a chance at a fresh start...A time when we can reflect on our lives and adjust our sails if we wish....a time for 'takin' stock of what we have and what we haven't...and setting some new goals. If that phrase reminds you of that great song from Annie Get Your Gun. Click Here to see a clip with full Broadway fanfare. May it remind us all how lucky we are for the everyday things we can sometimes take for granted.
I encourage each of you to take some time over the next few days to think about the new year that is winding its way our direction! Come up with a few things that you can improve and then add a few 'bucket list' items that will provide sweet memories in the years ahead! Those are the BEST! I have no doubt that many of those experiences you will find on our FLASH Community Calendar that is chock-full of exciting things to do! ENJOY!
Thank you FLASHERS for the opportunity to spend another wonderful year with you! ENJOY YOUR LIVES AND MAKE IT A HABIT TO FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE!
KEEPING NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
45 percent of American adults ring in the New Year with a resolution, but according to statistics, almost half will give up on their goals within six months. If you don't want to be a 'statistic', REAL SIMPLE MAGAZINE suggests these strategies:
1. Be specific. If you want to lose weight, set a goal in number of pounds.
2. Go public. Let friends and family know and request their support.
3. Substitute good behavior for bad. (Example: A walk instead of an afternoon snack.)
4. Track your progress by keeping a daily written record.
How To Open a Bottle of Champagne or Sparkling Wine
If you are planning to celebrate the New Year with a bottle of champagne, prosecco, or cava, you don't want the top to shoot off like a rocket. To pop and pour like a pro, watch this video.
The jungle is jumping with jazz in the stage adaptation of the Disney film, "The Jungle Book." FOOTBALL BOWL SCHEDULE

Making a New Year's Resolution to QUIT SMOKING?
Four new classes - all over the county - are starting in January!
The importance of proper exfoliation can't be stressed. When the skin is properly exfoliated products penetrate into the skin better. When the other layer of the skin (dead skin cells) is left too thick, products that are applied to the skin cannot penetrate very well. Facials to exfoliate, nourish, deep clean and hydrate the skin can be done with fruit enzymes, glycolic & salicylic peels or microdermabrasion. These exfoliators are the key to helping your products do their job to nourish and moisturize you skin. Monthly facials are one of the best anti-aging tools in our skincare tool box.

TIME TO TOSS YOUR COSMETICS?
The New Year is a good time to go through your stash of products. Even ruthless purgers tend to hold on to lotions and potions for too long, but all items become less effective over time. Throw out anything that smells or looks funny or that you know is well past its prime. Many products have a "period after opening" label, (a number followed by the letter M for 'months', sometimes printed in a square) that indicates how many months the item is effective after opening. In general eye makeup is good for six months, foundation a year, and lipsticks two years. Preservative-free products typically degrade more quickly than others.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SINGING ALL THESE YEARS?
Auld Lang Syne was partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. An old Scotch tune, 'Auld Lang Syne' literally means 'old long ago,' or simply, 'the good old days.' Here are the lyrics to the first verse.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

Every year the EL-DOEs of the Sebastian Elks Lodge distribute Christmas baskets to a family less fortunate than others.
The EL-DOEs donate money to purchase the items for the baskets; then Ms. Trish Wesely, Historian of the EL-DOEs, takes the donations, purchases the items, and assembles the baskets.
This year, families at Sebastian Elementary School were the recipient of the baskets overflowing with food. Pictured above are EL-DOES President Cheryl Hoyt and Assistant principal of Sebastian Elementary School, Jean DeBlasio. (Photo taken by Trish Wesely)
On December 17th the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hosted their annual Project Ninos holiday party. For

Cuban Art and Identity: 1900 to 1950 will feature exciting, colorful works of twentieth-century paintings by artists who defined the island nation's cultural identity. Cuba's "modernist" painters participated in a global movement in the arts, characterized by a self-conscious break with traditional art styles. These lively works of art will show how artists searched for a sense of national identity. This exhibition will offer Museum visitors an insider's view of Cuba's dynamic culture before the Castro era.
Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
The Production is about a Pastor with a beautiful wife and two kids who has faults and leading a different life than the message he preaches every Sunday. The show will bring real life situations with a Gospel Message to show that God can bring people back from any situation. The inspiration behind the play is about Healing, Transformation and Forgiveness. Come on out and enjoy this emotional rollercoaster ride. Get ready to laugh, cry, get mad and get your praise on!

The documentary Last Call at the Oasis presents a powerful argument for why the global water crisis will be the central issue facing our world this century. Water is the Earth's most valuable resource. Our cities are powered by it, agriculture and other industries depend on it, and all living things need it to survive. Instead of treating our water sources with care, we've allowed them to become polluted with toxic chemicals and agricultural and industrial waste. Pelican Island Audubon Society activists Richard and Juanita Baker will facilitate the discussion after the film. Cost: free but donations are always gratefully accepted Contact person and phone #: church office: 772-778-5880
