KICK-OFF SEPTEMBER!
September is here! We may not see leaves changing to fall colors, but there are other signs. Traffic moves a little slower in school zones. We've already welcomed some of our early 'snowbird' friends back from their summer homes, and one of my personal favorites,...football season has begun! Last week I had the pleasure of joining my husband and youngest daughter in Macon, GA to watch Mercer University bring back football for its first football game in 72 years. Mercer is the alma mater for all three of us, so it was a very nostalgic and exciting time, complete with parachutes landing on the field and fireworks in the sky! I love the NFL games too, but it's hard to beat the spirit and enthusiasm of college ball!
To keep up with the schedule for your favorite college team, you may want to bookmark this ESPN website For the pro games, you can go to this NFL website. And for live football and lots of equally enthusiastic fans, a Friday night visit to the fields of the Vero Beach High Indians or the Sebastian River Sharks should bring back fond memories of your own school days. Check with the respective schools for their schedules.Make sure to check the calendar for information on upcoming local events and as always...Just email me if you know of any that you would like to get on our calendar.
Enjoy your weekend FLASHERS.

HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH to our Jewish friends! Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish Year 5772 and began at sunset yesterday. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, or Yamim Noraim (the "Days of Awe"), and is followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the "day of atonement." The Mishnah refers to Rosh Hashanah as the "day of judgment," and it is believed that God opens the Book of Life on this day and begins to decide who shall live and who shall die. The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are viewed as an opportunity for Jews to repent (teshuvah, in Hebrew) and ensure a good fate. Click Here to learn more.

This Sunday, September 8th is National Grandparents Day
National Grandparents Day founder Marian McQuade wanted to set aside a special day to honor all grandparents, but also to encourage grandchildren to "tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents provide." President Jimmy Carter was so on board with this initiative that he permanently established the first Sunday after Labor Day as an official national holiday to honor grandmas and grandpas across the country. If you're lucky enough to still have grandparents in your family, you might want to explain Mrs. McQuade's quote to your children. Maybe they could write or create something special for their grandparents to show their appreciation and love.

Circle Sept. 10 on Your Calendar for Apple's Big iPhone Event
That's the date the company will debut a new lower-cost iPhone, alongside whatever update it has in store for the current iPhone 5. Much of the speculation there has centered on the usual kinds of camera and processor enhancements, as well as the likelihood of a fingerprint sensor. FOLLOW THE 50-20-30 RULE
If you get used to following this quick and easy to explain, perhaps harder to follow, money rule...You might be able to alleviate a great deal of financial stress.
- Essential Expenses
No more than 50% of your take-home pay should go toward Essential Expenses, which are the expenses you need in order to maintain the fundamentals of your life: food, shelter, heat, etc. Only four expenses go in this category: housing, transportation, utilities and groceries.
- Financial Priorities - At least 20% of your take-home pay goes to Financial Priorities, which are the goals that are essential to a strong financial foundation, including your retirement contributions, savings contributions and debt repayments. These are expenses that help you accomplish important financial tasks, such as paying off student loans, saving for a down payment on a house, or your daughter's wedding.
-
Lifestyle Choices. No more than 30% of your take-home pay should go to Lifestyle Choices, a.k.a. discretionary income, which are personal, voluntary and often fun ways to spend what's left of your
moo-lah-la. They may include childcare, concerts, cosmetics, gym memberships, your husband's hobby of the moment, pets, trying new restaurants or sitting at old bars, shopping, six months of Showtime to catch up on Homeland, and don't forget charitable giving.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics
EVENING SKINCARE
After enduring makeup, oil, weather, and pollution all day, your skin needs some tender loving care at night. Even when you're tired, it's worth it to take a few minutes to follow these nighttime tips.
Wash Your Face at Night
Don't go to bed until you've cleaned your makeup off your face. If you leave it on, your makeup grinds into your skin all night, causing breakouts and even stretching out the pores, which makes your skin look older.
Boost Collagen With Vitamin A
As you get older, your skin makes less collagen. If you never stopped making collagen and never damaged collagen, you would never get a wrinkle, your pores would stay small, you'd never get a scar, and your skin would stay nice and tight. To stimulate collagen production, which will help smooth fine lines and reduce the appearance of pores, apply vitamin A in the form of either a prescription or over-the-counter retinoid every night. As a bonus, retinoids can help lighten brown spots.
Apply Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is thinner than elsewhere on your body, and it becomes even thinner as you age. That can lead to under-eye circles and hollowing. Look for an eye cream or serum with vitamin A, C, E, or K, which can help repair the skin and lighten dark circles.
Be Happy
To look good you need to feel good. "Just take time to enjoy life." So go for a walk, call a friend, or enjoy a piece of exquisite dark chocolate. All in the name of beauty!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
.
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.
The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the priest walked up; stood beside the little boy; and said quietly, "Good morning, Alex."
"Good morning. Father," he replied, still focused on the plaque. "Father, what is this?"
The priest replied, "Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, "Which service, the 9:00 or 11:00?"

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEKAre Your Eggs Fresh? Are Your Eggs Fresh? A
If you aren't sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it's past the fresh stage.

HEALTH TIP
HERE'S WHY NAPS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!
A University of California study reported by the Wall Street Journal this week makes these suggestions for napping. For a quick boost of alertness, experts say a 10-to-20-minute power nap is adequate for getting back to work in a pinch. For cognitive memory processing, however, a 60-minute nap may do more good. It helps with remembering facts, places and faces. The downside: some grogginess upon waking. Finally, the 90-minute nap will likely involve a full cycle of sleep, which aids creativity and emotional and procedural memory, such as learning how to ride a bike and does not usually cause grogginess and disorientation upon waking. The ideal time to nap is generally between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Napping later in the day could interfere with nighttime sleep.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Crispy Southwest Chicken Wraps
INGREDIENTS
1 cup cooked rice, warm or at room temperature
1 cup cooked, shredded chicken (or other leftover meat, like shredded pork or beef)
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 green onion, finely sliced (white and green parts)
1/2 red or green pepper, diced
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
juice of 1 lime
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
2 cups shredded cheese (I use a combination of Monterey jack and sharp cheddar)
Sour cream (optional)
6 burrito-sized flour tortillas
DIRECTIONS
Mix rice together with chili powder, cumin and garlic salt. Add remaining ingredients except for cheese and sour cream. Sprinkle cheese over tortillas, leaving 1/2-inch border around edges, then arrange chicken and rice mixture down the center of each tortilla. (Optional: I like to dollop little bits of sour cream over the cheese before arranging chicken and rice mixture down the center - it makes the wraps delightfully creamy.) Roll stuffed tortillas, leaving edges open and slightly flatten the wraps with the palm of your hand. Spray seam-side of the wrap lightly with cooking spray.
Heat a large non-stick skillet (or griddle) over medium heat for 1 minute. Arrange wraps, seam-side down, in pan or griddle and cook until golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side. Cooking them seam-side down first helps seal the long edge so they don't fall apart. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining wraps. Serve warm.
