 "FALL BACK" THIS WEEKEND

As we celebrate Halloween tonight, say goodbye to October.  This Sunday, November 3rd,  we will "fall back" one hour  as daylight savings time ends.  This is my favorite side of daylight savings we are gifted an extra hour!  How often do we wish for more hours in a day? So, remember that it's best to set your clock back one hour when you go to bed Saturday night. (It's also a good reminder to change those batteries in your smoke alarms.) Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea of having more daylight in an essay in 1784 "to diminish the cost of candles," but it wasn't  tried in our country until World War I to preserve fuel for the war effort. After the War, we went back to Standard Time until February of 1942, 40 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when President Roosevelt re-established it under the name "War Time." The time wasn't official, however, until Congress passed The Uniform Time Act of 1966. The Act allowed for states to opt out if they wished. And Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that still don't recognize Daylight Savings Time. In Indiana it's really confusing  because 74 counties are on Eastern Daylight Time and 18 are on Central???!

...And that, FLASHERS, is your history lesson for today! So, celebrate Halloween tonight, check out all the things to do this weekend that are listed below in our community calendar and remember to have fun.  We all know, that no matter what the clock says, the best time to have is a 'good time'!

IS IT FLU OR JUST A COLD?

...AND WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

A common cold usually starts off slowly. Symptoms include congestion, coughing, runny nose, sore throat and mild fatigue. Colds usually occur anytime between September and May, but are rare in summer. Influenza (flu)  begins suddenly. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, severe fatigue, loss of appetite and cough. 'Flu season' usually occurs between November and March, peaking in December and January, and will last about 10 days if not treated.  Even though the flu is an airborne virus, hand washing is still important. When a person who has the flu sneezes, coughs or even speaks, the air around him is filled with tiny droplets that contain the virus. They can land on a hard surface and be contracted by anyone who touches that surface. Flu shots, which are being offered now, are 70% effective in preventing the flu and will make symptoms milder if you do get it. Check with your doctor to see if you should get a flu shot this year.

This year Nude cheeks are definitely in! To get the Blush Free cheeks you need a contouring powder or a bronzer. You just want something 2 shades darker than your skin tone. Sweep the color below your cheekbones, under your chin and along the sides of your temples. This will keep your face from appearing flat with no dimension. Want to experiment a little?   RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Pumpkin - Cheesecake - Snickerdoodles

Ingredients

3¾ cups all-purpose flour

1½ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. salt

  1. ½ tsp. ground cinnamon

¼ tsp. freshly-ground ground nutmeg

1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup light brown sugar

¾ cup pumpkin puree

1 large egg

  1. 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Filling Ingredients:

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

¼ cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Cinnamon-sugar coating:

½ cup granulated sugar

  1. 1 tsp. ground cinnamon

½ tsp. ground ginger

Dash of allspice

Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg together. Set aside.
  2. Beat together the butter and sugars on medium high speed until fluffy about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Blend in pumpkin puree, beat in egg and then add vanilla.
  4. Slowly add dry ingredients on low speed just until combined. Cover and chill dough for an hour.
  5. To make the cream cheese filling, blend cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together. Chill for an hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 and line your baking sheets with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and spices for the coating and set aside.
  7. To make the cookies, take a tablespoon of the cookie batter. Flatten it like a pancake and place a teaspoon of the cream cheese in center. Form another tablespoon of the cookie batter into a flat pancake shape and place on top of the cream cheese. Pinch the edges together sealing in the cream cheese and roll into a ball. Roll in the cinnamon sugar coating and place on the prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart.
  8. Repeat until the dough is gone and flatten the cookie dough balls with a heavy bottomed glass or measuring cup.
  9. Bake the cookies for 10-15 minutes or until the tops start to crack. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes and transfer to a wire rack. Enjoy!
