   SEVEN DAYS 'TIL HALLOWEEN!

We read a tip this week to help you to stay away from your "trick or treat" candy. The tip suggested that you buy candy that you don't like. Now, what's the fun in that?! Instead...FLASH says buy what you like and instead of snacking on what is left, donate the left-over candy to Bonnie Alberga  as fillers for her 'Cookies for Soldiers' packages. The next collection will be November 14th at Vero Beach Elk's Lodge.  One Halloween tip we like so much that we include it every year .... Put bubble wrap under your doormat. Play this trick on the little goblins and watch their reaction when they step on the mat and it goes...POP! The fright doesn't last and they usually start to stompin' and dancin'!

There's a lot going on in our town this week and we have quite a busy weekend. The weather is supposed to be wonderful! So...Get out and enjoy a beautiful weekend and some fun events! There are open auditions at Riverside Theatre, Warm Night Cool Jazz concert at the Museum of Art, the free concert on Ocean Drive...(We'll be there with the printed November calendars), several area haunted houses, free admissions weekend at the Museum of Art, Fall Fest at Trinity, and another family friendly fest at Imagine, Community Costume Parade, and adults can party at the Spooky Speakeasy at the Heritage Center.  Just make sure you check the calendar....There's quite a few more events and we certainly don't want our FLASHERS to miss out on the fun! ENJOY Life Flashers!

 CREDIT CARD SCAM WARNING!

Apparently a credit card scam that has been around since the late '90s has surfaced again. Beware of someone calling and posing as the fraud department of your credit card company, supposedly to verify a purchase that was made on your account. The scammer will read you your card number which he already got from some source, but will ask you to read them the three digit security code on the back of the card to show that the card is still in your possession and hasn't been lost or stolen. (He will then have all the information he needs to make purchases online or by phone.) Don't fall for this! Remember the real credit card company already has your security code.
The best protection against this type of telephone scheme is to ask for the caller's name, department and extension, then hang up and call him back at the  phone number listed on your credit card.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

A judge was interviewing a lady regarding her pending divorce, and asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce?"

She replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by."

"No," he said, "I mean what is the foundation of this case?"

"It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," she responded.

He said, "Do you have a real grudge?"

"No, sir," she replied, "we only have an open carport."

"I mean," he continued, "What are your relations like?"

"I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband's parents."

"Please," he tried again, "is there any infidelity in your marriage?"

"Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. "

"Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?"

"Yes," she responded, "about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do."

Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a divorce?"

"Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied. "I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He says he can't communicate with me."

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

CHEESE PUMPKIN APPETIZERS

(Children will enjoy helping to make these!)

Ingredients

16 oz. room-temp cream cheese
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar
3 tablespoons minced onion
2 tablespoons salsa
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon minced jalapeno
Pretzel rods
Parsley

With a mixer and scoop onto plastic wrap and use the wrap to form the mixture into a 5-inch pumpkin-shaped ball or several mini pumpkins; chill at least 2 hours. To serve, unwrap, roll in crushed nuts and press a pretzel rod into the top for the stem and top off with a sprig of parsley. Draw ridges on pumpkins with a toothpick.
SCENE AROUND TOWN

Bonnie Alberga  was spotted at the Howl-O-Ween Pawrade and Pet Expo last weekend. Here she is pictured with her dog Cali, the Fairy Princess.  There were over 50 dogs registered for the costume parade and lots of Pet-Friendly booths with free doggie treats for attendees. It was a perfect day for a pet parade and everyone was all smiles... Even Cali!  Look at that face!

Adorable!

The Vero Beach Power Squadron (VBPS) received the 2013 1st place award for Membership involvement and Retention presented by the United States Power Squadron national membership committee.

The bottom line measure of success for a squadron's Involvement and Retention Program is its membership levels over time. The VBPS membership levels on January first of each year has grown from 236 in 2009 to 387 in 2013, an increase of 64 percent. Membership on May 6, 2013 was 417. Pictured here is Kathie Thomas, chairman of membership Involvement receiving the award from Commander Judy Peschio. VBPS has certainly found the secret formula for membership retention and growth. It's all about relationships.  They work continuously at personal contact. It's the key! They cultivate members' talents, sponsor a plethora of social activities, and make an enormous effort to involve everyone so that all members feel connected. Our small town of Vero Beach has one of the largest memberships in the nation. CONGRATS!

When Vero Beach Realtor Karen Gaskill "inherited" literally hundreds of eyeglass frames through the sale of a home of a local ophthalmologist, she knew she wanted to get them into the hands of people who could use them. As the individual who evolved the Vero Beach Christian Business Association into a nonprofit organization 10 years ago, she immediately thought of donating the eyeglasses to VBCBA, knowing that a good home would be found for them. A good home, indeed! VBCBA Board Member Tom Michaels contacted The Sebastian Lion's Club and a transfer was made. The frames will go to an optical shop so that they can be used in the local area, largely in the Fellsmere area. The Sebastian Lion's Club provides the exam at no charge and pays for the prescription lenses to be inserted into the frames.

Betty Letrick, left, Jinny Earnshaw, co-chairs of the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Sebastian, receive the second $5,000 check from Sam Lyons on behalf of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans at Christ the King Lutheran, Sebastian while Carolyn Wright, the church's representative, watches.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans recently donated a second $5,000 check to the Ecumenical Food Pantry on Roseland Road because the Sebastian area community raised $10,000 toward a Thrivent challenge grant obtained by Christ the King Lutheran of Sebastian. "The amazing donations from Thrivent and those from the community to get the challenge grant have been life blood to the pantry," said Jinny Earnshaw, director of the Ecumenical Food Pantry. "We currently have over 1800 family units registered for the 2013-2014 year. Since many come only when they get caught short, we are currently serving more than 500 families a month. This is an increase over last year. We are getting 15 - 20 new families monthly. With our present economic conditions we expect more, because there will be a decrease in food stamps starting Nov. 1st."

LIGHT THE WAY WITH PURPLE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS
FROM MICHELLE T. VAN KEULEN Reply

On Sunday, October 27th,November is Pancreatic Cancer awareness month. So, let's shift the pink over to Purple. I am promoting this in honor of my Mom who passed away from Pancreatic cancer. By supporting the Purple Lights Campaign, you will be supporting those who are currently battling the disease with limited treatment options, while also remembering those  who lost their lives. All you have to do is take a strand or two of purple lights (many on sale because of Halloween) and hang them at your home or at your office. This fall we will come together to turn the country purple for PurpleLight 2013! Taking place in all communities on Sunday October 27, PurpleLight is our way of kicking off November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.  If you have any questions please call Michelle at: 772-532-5828.

Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
