editor's note poka-dot
Hello FLASHERS,

This week's editor's note is going to be a little different from what you are accustomed to reading. If you have subscribed to FLASH for any length of time, you know that I strive to provide a strictly POSITIVE newsletter. It contains tidbits of generic information that I hope you find interesting in addition to a comprehensive local listing of events.

Though I personally have strong political convictions, I have never voiced my view in FLASH and I strive to remain impartial in this forum. Rest assured that I have absolutely no desire to use FLASH as a platform to become involved in the tug-a-war of politics. This past week I was accused of doing just that and nothing could be farther from the truth.  I suspect that many of my FLASHERS received an email that referenced FLASH in a less than favorable way. For that reason alone...I feel the need to set the record straight. I have ALWAYS encouraged and requested event information from our FLASHERS and there is a link in every single issue of FLASH, at the bottom of the calendar, that allows anyone to submit an event. I also send a personal email every month to more than 300 individuals who have registered to submit events to our calendar. Please understand that I can ONLY include information that I am aware of. To expect otherwise is an expectation that I will never be able to live up to. If there is an event that you would like to see on the FLASH calendar, please click here to submit it. Unless it is a private business that stands to make a profit, your event will be included on the online calendar and you will receive a confirmation email from me. If you do not receive that email...check back with me.  I receive hundreds of emails every week and I admit that sometimes things get a bit crazy.  However, I can promise you that my intention is to ALWAYS include your events.  I just ask that you share them with me.

Enough said .... Check out ALL of the wonderful events in the posts below. Please try to patronize those who advertise with us on the weekly FLASH as well as on our printed calendar. They are the ones that allow me to continue to offer both for free and I thank each one of them. Won't you please thank them too? :)  Enjoy your weekend FLASHERS.  Things are picking up and there is a lot going on these days.

DECORATE FOR FALL
WITH FLOWERS
.
You have to love this fresh fall look! Instead of carving pumpkin faces, why not carve your pumpkin into a flower pot. Simply cut an opening in your pumpkin that will accommodate the circumference of the pot you will place inside.  Scoop out as much of the inside of the pumpkin as you can...save your seeds. You can use the recipe below to make a yummy snack. Once you finish your scooping... place your flower pot inside. If it sits too low, simply plump it up by placing some crumpled paper inside the base of the pumpkin.

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

6 VARIATIONS OF ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

INGREDIENTS

Seeds from 1 medium-sized pumpkin

Water -- 4 cups

Salt -- 1/4 cup

Oil or melted butter -- 2 tablespoons

Method
  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Separate the pumpkin seeds from the pulp and discard pulp. Place seeds in a colander and rinse well.
  2. Bring the water and salt to a boil in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the pumpkin seeds, return to a boil and let simmer for one full minute. Then cover the saucepan tightly and remove it from heat. Let the pumpkin seeds soak for 10-20 minutes, then drain.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the pumpkin seeds with the oil and spread them out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven, tossing occasionally, until browned and crisp, about 30-40 minutes. Remove, cool completely and store in an airtight container.
Variations
  • Southwestern Pumpkin Seeds: toss the soaked pumpkin seeds with the oil and 2 teaspoons chili powder.
  • Indian Pumpkin Seeds: toss the soaked pumpkin seeds with the oil and 1/2 teaspoon curry powder.
  • Spicy Pumpkin Seeds: toss the soaked pumpkin seeds with the oil and 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
  • Sweet Pumpkin Seeds: toss the soaked pumpkin seeds with the oil and 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger. Roast a little longer at 325F to prevent burning.
  • Teriyaki Pumpkin Seeds: toss the soaked pumpkin seeds with the oil and 1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce. Roast a little longer at 325F to prevent burning.
  • This recipe works for seeds from all kinds of winter squash. The seeds from smaller varieties of pumpkin and squash will be more tender.

The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic September 28, 2013 - January 5, 2014 Supporting Sponsors: Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Stifel Simply Beautiful: Photographs from National Geographic will take visitors on a visual journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
