editor's note poka-dot
Happy Thursday FLASHERS!
Did you know that today is 'National Girlfriends Day'? It's time to celebrate that relationship! Show your partner how much you care or ladies... celebrate your friendships! Not sure how exactly to do that?  Here are a few suggestions:

1. Go to the beach

Pray for no rain and head to the beach at sunset for a nice walk. Top it off with dinner at one of the close by restaurants. Order two glasses of wine and prepare a toast for your lady!

3. Give Flowers - We ladies love flowers! It can be a bouquet a plant or hand-picked flowers from a walk together! It could be a hand in hand walk in your own backyard.

4. Movie Marathon - Let's go to the movies or check out Netflix or Redbox and rent some of those chick flicks you love to watch with your BFF. Click Here to view a list of 50 greatest chick flicks.

5. Give to Others - Plan a day to volunteer together. Helping others can be some of the most enjoyable times you spend together.

6. Write a Sincere Note ~ Take the time to write a note to let your friend or girlfriend know what you love and enjoy most about her. There's nothing like putting it in writing!

7. Send a special email ~ Can be as simple as ... "Thinking of you and how lucky I am to have you in my life. xoxo"  Unexpected little notes are always welcome!

Along the same lines as writing a note, send an e-card. If your best girlfriend is a distance away, still send out a card. It'll make her day!

8. Karaoke Night or Trivia Night - Step out of the comfort zone and go for trivia night or Karaoke!  You are bound to have fun-fun-fun!!

9. Spa Experience - You can do this one at home or actually go to a spa. Girls get your nails done together and couples ... what about a massage?
10. Be whimsical... Maybe rent a convertible for the night, pop in your favorite music, and hit the road. Hit some of your favorite spots and enjoy a little star gazing!

Enjoy!

TOBY TURNER IS

A POSITIVE PERSON
by: Ashley Brown

Toby Turner has lived in Vero Beach nearly his entire life. After graduating from Vero Beach High School in 1977 he attended Indian River Community College. He fulfilled his dream of becoming a firefighter in 1978 when he began working for the Vero Beach Fire Department. As a firefighter, Toby has succeeded in numerous ways. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1990 and chosen as the "Outstanding Young Firefighter for 1988" by the Vero Beach Jaycees, followed by the Indian River County "Firefighter of the Year" award. He later became a public safety professional with over 35 years of experience in the Fire Service. He currently works out of Firehouse One as a Ladder Lieutenant and is the Field Training Officer for High Angle rescue. Toby has also served as an Adjunct facility member at the Indian River State College Fire Academy since 1987, and has volunteered his time to teach classes for the Great Florida Fire School for the last four years.

Over the years Mr. Turner has taken on an active role and proven to be a very valuable citizen of Vero Beach. In his service to the community Toby has received special recognition by so many. The Indian River Memorial Hospital taxing district recognized him in 1993 for initiating the first smoke detector program for infants in Indian River County, and the Marine Corp League presented him with a "Citation for Excellence" for beginning the Toys for Tots program at all county fire stations in 1994. Among his other awards Toby was presented with the "Hometown Hero" in 2000, and the "Pioneer Award" in 2001 from Indian River State College. The March of Dimes program also honored Toby with a "Citizen of Distinction" award in 2002 and the Treasure Coasts Fire Chiefs association presented him with their first "Emergency Service Provider of the Year" award in 2009 as well as the One Hundred Clubs award for "Distinguished Service". In 2012 Toby received the prestigious "4-H Hall of Fame" award for his service to the Indian River County 4-H extension program, and he has also been recognized as a 10 gallon member of the Indian River Blood Bank, where as an O negative donor he stops by three times a year to give a pint or two.

In light of all of this, Mr. Turner says that his greatest accomplishment was being able to bring the County owned fairgrounds venue to its full potential as a revenue source for the citizens. Toby was instrumental in working with members of the Vero Beach Firefighter's Association in forming the "Firefighters' Fair" back in 1980, and since then this fund raising event has become one of the most popular events held for families in our community. Toby has served as the fairs association's president from 1991 to 1996, and in March of 1996 Toby moved into the general manager's position, overseeing the operation of the county fair. Toby also served for three years on the Board of Directors for the Florida Federation of Fairs from 2009 - 2012, which governs and assists fairs in Florida.

Toby and his wife Gwen have raised three sons, Peter who is 26, Jacob who is 24, and  Adam, who is 22. Turner served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 567 for 5 years where his three sons obtained the rank of Eagle. He says that one piece of advice he could give to others would be to "Set the example. You have to be the leader in all you do". Toby is beyond deserving of our Positive Person Title and Flash is honored to be one of many to recognize him for his service. Thank you for everything you have done Toby, we at FLASH wish you well in all future endeavors and thank you for being such a great example for all of us!

NEW STUDY ON BREAKFAST AND HEART ATTACKS

Skipping breakfast may increase your chances of a heart attack. Previous studies have suggested a link between breakfast and obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other health problems seen as precursors to heart problems. Now, a recent Harvard study of older men found those who regularly skipped breakfast had a 27 percent higher risk of a heart attack than those who ate a morning meal. "There's no reason why the results wouldn't apply to other people, too," the Harvard researchers said. To read the complete report from U.S.News, Click Here

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK

HONEY ----- HOW SWEET IT IS!

Honey is, in and of itself, unique. Did you know it is one of only a select number of foods that will never spoil? That's right ... This sweet sticky substance will never go bad. It might get hard, but all you have to do is heat it up.  Here are a couple of great uses for the sticky golden substance.

1. It can serve as an energy shot. Instead of reaching for a packet of carbohydrate - rich gels or shots you might want to reach for a spoonful of honey. Its unique blend of natural sugars have proven to be as effective as the prepackaged singles that help power the body through endurance exercise.

2. Honey is a great treatment for dry skin. Those problem areas like your elbows and ankle knuckles and heels can be soothed with a spoonful of honey! The sticky glue of honey creates a moist healing solution that can also reduce inflammation.

3.  A mixture of honey, almond oil and beeswax transforms into a superb lip balm that will sooth your chapped lips.

4.  Not only can honey be a great beauty aide, it can also be medicinal. It is known to calm coughs. No, it's not an old wives' tale. A spoonful has proven to soothe a sore throat and cough equally as well as conventional cough syrups.  Caution...Never give honey to children under one as they may be at risk for infant botulism.

WARNING TO PARENTS!
DANGER OF THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE

FLASH Posted this last year and received an email this week asking if we would feature it again in FLASH.  The cinnamon challenge is another one of those crazy fads that circulate quickly among our kids. This one has been all over YOU TUBE and traveled very quickly. However, there are still parents who may not know anything about it. The challenge is to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without any water. This can cause coughing and vomiting, but it can also cause choking and lung damage. The WALL STREET JOURNAL published a warning. LOCAL ART TEACHERS ARE IN THE LIGHTHOUSE SPOTLIGHT
Educators of Indian River Charter High School's Visual Art Department shine in this art show! Rarely do teachers get the credit they deserve.  Yet their art is just as important a part of any well rounded student's education. The arts can not only expand a student's viewpoint but also spur creative thinking. That's why Lighthouse Art and Framing has decided to honor the wonderful arts teachers in our local school system by continuing our annual summer show featuring these talented front line warriors. Ramayana Baba and Anthony Kopp of Indian River Charter High School will be featured in this year's homage to the art educators of Indian River County in the "Lighthouse Art and Framing Annual Teacher Show" on view through the month of August. Stop by and Lighthouse Art and Framing's gallery from August 1st thru the 30th. Summer hours for the gallery are Tuesday thru Thursday 10am to 6pm, Monday and Friday 10am to 4pm, and Saturdays 10am to 2pm. We will be open for the Downtown Art District Gallery Stroll on Friday, August 2nd from 5:30 pm until 8:30pm. Lighthouse Art and Framing is located at 1875 14th Avenue.

Gloria Estefan

VANITY FAIR'S NEW BEST DRESSED LIST FOR THE YEAR

SOOTHE A SUNBURN

As you eak out the last few weeks of summer, you might just find yourself at the beach. You might want to consider the following if you or your child finds that the fun of the day has left a painful sunburn. Fill a pitcher with warm water and soak the tea bags in it. Let the water cool to a lukewarm temp. The water should be very dark after the tea bags have soaked. Now you are ready to submerge a rag or washcloth into the tea and then dab it onto the sunburn. Do not wipe it off! Leave it on and let it be absorbed into your skin. Once it is dry you can reapply as necessary. Do this process before bedtime, you can go to sleep and give it time to work its magic. In the morning you can rinse it off in the shower. WARNING: The tea can stain the cloth that you use so make sure to use an old soft rag.
GARAGE SALE TIPS
Summer is winding down and kids will be heading back to school in a few weeks. Many of you might be organizing your children's rooms in order to advocate for a successful year ahead. Out with the old and in with the new! Instead of just tossing the 'old'. You might want to consider a garage sale. If you plan it with your children and involve their help it can prove to be a fun experience. Perhaps you will want to split the profits with your children. This can be a great way to  'help' your children earn money for that special something that they have been wanting. Here is a link to a segment on the Kathie Lee and Hoda show where they had an expert pass along tips for a successful sale. Some seem a bit over the top...but if you are the 'Martha Stewart' of garage sales...Have at it! :)

  DID YOU KNOW?

There were U.S soldiers during World War II who were artists and became known as the 'Ghost Army'... An infantry of illusion. Their mission was to use fabricated artillery and pre-recorded sounds to deceive the Germans into thinking Allied forces were in one location, while real U.S. troops advanced miles away. The Ghost Army remained classified for more than half a century after the war. Want to learn more?
