 Hello FLASHERS and Happy Thursday!
This past week has been bittersweet for me! I am writing this editor's note while sitting on the floor of my youngest daughter's apartment in Macon, Georgia. (She was the first to settle away from home after graduating in the spring.) I am winding my way back to Vero after having attended my middle daughter's graduation from Auburn University. It's been bittersweet for several reasons. My three children are no longer little ones under my wing...and I so enjoyed those years! Secondly, this past Saturday was not only graduation, but it was also the date that one of our son's childhood friends got married. William was asked to be the 'Best Man' and so it was the first time, as a family, we were not together for each other's momentous occasion. Oh how we all wished to be in two places at once. Since that was not possible, William headed to St. Augustine while the remaining three headed to Auburn to celebrate with our daughter Allison Faith. Cherished childhood moments played through my memory this past week like an ongoing familiar and well loved video. I was continuously reminded of the incredible moments we have spent growing together as a family and the extraordinary friendships that have developed through the years. To infuse brevity I will jump to the essence of what the past week has instilled in me. Simply put...RELATIONSHIPS and the importance of tending to them. I recalled my own college experience this past weekend and I remembered one of my favorite little sayings... 'The One Thing You Can Always Count On Is Change.' It is how we weave our lives through that change that truly matters. All relationships are an | |
Time to Celebrate!...CONGRATS ALLIE!
| investment. They take work, nurturing, time, patience and understanding. As change rears its head, it will require different attributes from us as a family to maintain what we have considered 'status quo' for so long. We are going to have to work harder at: staying in touch, being accepting of other's decisions, patient while paths are explored, accepting and welcoming of others as relationships turn into marriages, and the list can go on and on. Lives revolve around relationships and it is both the surface and in depth ones that meld into a meaningful life. So, whatever stage of life you are in, enjoy it! Work at your relationships and cherish the moment for change is around the corner and will usher in a new status quo. So, get ready to alter your sail and forge on united ...creating a happy and meaningful life that is experienced together!

DIANE BUTLER
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
by: Ashley Brown
Diane Butler has been volunteering in Vero Beach for 6 years. As a mother of two and grandmother to four grandchildren, Diane has a sincere desire and interest to help our community flourish. She has been involved in the Alzheimer's & Parkinson's Assoc. of Indian River County for 5 years as well as volunteering with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Festival of Trees, and Touch-a-Truck. She is also the Director of Community Outreach at Home Instead Senior Care, where she helps seniors in Indian River County stay in their homes. Ms. Butler has received the 2012 Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of IRC, as well as two Blue Ribbons for Decorated Trees at the 2012 Festival of Trees.
Diane's main inspiration is her daughter, Janelle, who is 33 years old. When asked what advice she could give to others, Diane replied, "Follow your dreams and always put a smile on your face!" It's funny how something so easy as smiling can change your whole outlook on the day.
Diane considers returning to school as a single mom and receiving an Interior
Design degree with the highest GPA in the class as her greatest accomplishment. Any parent, single or not, can appreciate the commitment, focus, patience and hours of multitasking this accomplishment demanded. This achievement also conveys a lot about Diane's character, as she sought to better not only herself, but also the lives of her children.
Diane isn't all work and no play! A fun fact that shows a more adventurous side to Diane is her expedition to Alaska, which found her in the position as 'musher' when she went dog sledding atop a glacier.
Thank you, Diane, for continuing to work towards the betterment of our community here in Vero Beach. We at FLASH appreciate everything you have done and are thrilled to be able to recognize your efforts and spotlight you as the 'Positive Person' you are!

GET READY FOR BACK TO SCHOOL ADJUSTING TO THE NEW SCHOOL ROUTINE
Don't wait until the night before school starts to get your children into the new sleep routine. Several nights before school begins, have them go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night until they are at the 'new' bedtime. Also begin waking late sleeping teens earlier and earlier, closer to the time they'll need to rise when school begins.

SAVE ON TEXTBOOKS
If you have a freshman going off to college, one expense you may not be anticipating is how expensive textbooks have become. On average, the typical college student may spend as much as $1,000 or more on textbooks each year. Some of the more advanced studies even have books costing several hundred dollars each. (The Encyclopedia Of International Media and Communications sells new for a whopping $1,215!) Consequently, to save money, it's best to buy used books and even better to rent them. At some schools, you may find them locally, but there are also several discounted sites for sales and rentals online. Search for "college textbook discounts" at www.google.com. Be sure to check the rating or reviews on the site you select.

TOO MUCH SUGAR??
READ THE LABEL
According to the Diabetes Division of Everyday Health, each of us should eat no more than 8 teaspoons of added sugar a day, whether we have diabetes or not. Unfortunately, most of us eat as much as 30 times that! Along with the sugar we sprinkle in our tea or coffee, "added sugar" includes that which is already in desserts, cereals, sodas, salad dressings, etc. When you add that to the naturally occurring sugar in fruits and some vegetables, we're all consuming a lot of sugar! Usually, the added sugar in foods is stated in grams on the label, so it's helpful to know that there are 4 grams in a teaspoonful of sugar. To learn more Click Here, then scroll down to read the text about safe sugar substitutes.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
Robert Benchley was a humor writer and later a character actor in the movies. In the 1920's, he would meet Dorothy Parker, Edna Ferber and other literary greats daily for lunch at the famed Algonquin Hotel round table in NYC. Noted for his quotes, this is a noted favorite!

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Put pancake mix in a ketchup bottle for a clean, no mess way to make pancakes! Mixing in a measuring cup with a spout also works well. A fun 1st day of school breakfast is to make pancakes in the shape of the number that corresponds with the grade each child will be entering! This will be a favorite all the way up to the 12th grade. ENJOY!

This is the first time we have ever featured a business on 'Scene Around Town'. However...such exciting news that we feel they are deserving. INEOS Bio, The Indian River BioEnergy Center in Vero Beach, is the first facility in the world using new advanced bioenergy technology to convert waste to renewable fuel and electricity. It is now producing cellulosic ethanol at commercial scale. First ethanol shipments will be released this month. Not only does this have global impact, but also enormous impact locally. The Center cost more than $130 million and created more than 400 direct construction, engineering and manufacturing jobs during its development. The project sourced more than 90% of the equipment from U.S. manufacturers, creating or retaining jobs in more than 10 states. The Center has 65 fulltime employees and provides $4 million annually in payroll to the local community.
