SUMMER IS JUST ABOUT OVER!

Where has summer gone? WOW! I feel like we have been on the bullet train the last few months. The end of summer obviously ushers in a change from carefree, laid back, fun days to a time of schedules and routines. For businesses things begin to pick up and life gets a little busier. Calendars are filling up and events are being planned which is evident by the multiple posts below. Summer will soon be a sweet memory.  As life's pace shift gears...Don't stress! Here is a lesson on stress that I received in an email this week. Perfect timing!

A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience.  Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'Half empty or half full?'  She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz.

She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter.  It depends on how long I hold it.   If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.  If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.  In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress.  If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on."

"As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.  When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced.

So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night.  Pick them up again tomorrow if you must...But give yourself a breather and time to relax!

Don't stress FLASHERS!  Enjoy your Thursday and plan a fun farewell to summer this weekend before kids head back to school next week!

DENAE LINNARTZ

IS A POSITIVE PERSON
by: Ashley Brown
2010 is the year that Denae Linnartz began actively volunteering her service to our community.  This is when she started a Daisy Girl Scout Troop for her eldest daughter, Addison, and since then has begun to create a new Daisy group for her youngest daughter Eden. Denae believes this to be her greatest accomplishment, as the fact that parents entrust their most valuable assets to her, their children, means the world to her. "When our Troop does things like singing Christmas carols to the elderly in a nursing home, and we get to see the happiness and appreciation that comes from that, then I know that the time I give of myself for free is all worth it."
Besides being involved with the Girl Scouts, Denae is a member of Liberty Magnet's Parent Teacher Association, a Winners Walk Tall Captain (youth mentoring program) at Liberty Magnet for two Kindergarten classes from 2010-2011, a Room Mom from 2010-2013, and Liberty Magnet SAC in 2010-11 and 2012-2013. Mrs.
Linnartz also served on The Buggy Bunch Leadership Team for two years and was their Public Relations Chair for one year, and she has also been the Public Relations Coordinator (volunteer position) for Sebastian Christian Church since 2011.
In her own words, Denae's motivation is, "We lead by example. I volunteer for selfish reasons...I enjoy it. But...more importantly, I take my responsibilities as a parent very seriously and by leading my girls by example, my hope would be that they one day will follow in my footsteps...volunteering to help make the world a better place". When it comes to her inspiration, Mrs. Linnartz said that her two daughters inspire her by their innocence and selflessness, and that any advice she could give to others would be to, "Get involved! Don't know where to start? Look online, in the paper, ask your church, or visit a school. You'll not only help others, but make some friends in the meantime!"
Denae Linnartz and her family moved to Vero Beach in 2005 and currently reside in Sebastian.  She has been married to her husband, Bruce, for 14 years and has two daughters, Addison and Eden. Mrs. Linnartz you are a great inspiration to everyone in this community!  Thank you for everything you have done. You have given your time to help the kids in our town have fulfilling childhoods, ensuring their success  as adults. What could be more important than helping along the future of our community?

NEW BOOK ABOUT JACK AND JACKIE

It seems there will always be an endless fascination with the Kennedys and, consequently, there is a lot of interest in this new book by Christopher Anderson, THESE FEW PRECIOUS DAYS - THE FINAL YEAR OF JACK WITH JACKIE. The book presumably details the President's affair with Marilyn Monroe and Jackie's reaction to it. To view the CBS video and to read more, Click Here.

  PEANUT BAN AT SCHOOL?

Over the span of a decade, reports of kids with peanut allergies have spiked by 18 percent, according to the CDC(Center for Disease Control). Today, about 1 in 25 children suffer from the condition, and about 18 percent of them have had attacks in school. Severe sufferers  may experience potentially life-threatening anaphylactic shock in response to ingestion of peanuts. Anaphylactic shock is an allergic reaction in which the release of histamine causes swelling, difficulty in breathing, heart failure, circulatory collapse, and sometimes death. As a result, school-wide peanut bans have doubled in the past two years. Before you send your child off to school with that peanut butter and jelly sandwich, be sure to check the 'peanut policy' at your child's school.

SUMMER SPECIALS SET TO EXPIRE!

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM WHILE YOU CAN

Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

Here's a list from the REAL SIMPLE website that explains why certain foods should not be refrigerated.

Tomatoes

The chill of the icebox makes tomatoes dull and mealy. Store on the counter (under-ripe ones can go on the windowsill).

Melon

Keep whole melons like watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew on the counter for best flavor. USDA research found that storage at room temp may even help keep the antioxidants better intact. Once cut, store in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

Potatoes

Cold temps will break down the starches in potatoes, making them unpleasantly sweet and gritty. Cool and dry darkness is a spud's best bud.

Onions

Uncut onions are happy out of the cold. The humidity of the refrigerator makes them moldy and mushy.

Bread

The refrigerator dries it out fast. Instead, keep what you'll eat within four days at room temperature and freeze the rest

Coffee

The fridge (and the freezer) create condensation, which can affect the flavor of both ground coffee and coffee beans. Coffee fares best in an airtight container in the pantry.

Winter Squashes

Varieties such as acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash will last for about a month or more in the pantry.

                                                              BUT

Did you know that ripe Bananas will last longer (up to 2 weeks) in the fridge? The skin will turn dark, but the fruit will be fine. Just make sure they are ripe before refrigerating.

FACEBOOK LOGOS

August is National Peach Month and you can enjoy delicious and juicy peaches grown right in our own county-if you can find them.  Over the past decade, hurricanes and emerging pest and diseases have seriously damaged the citrus industry in Florida and although citrus is still the major agricultural crop in our area; some progressive farmers in Indian River County have been putting more and more acreage into planting peaches.  Until fairly recently, peaches could not be grown in our area because they needed a certain number of chill hours in order to be productive.  Chill hours are the number of hours needed at or below 45 degrees throughout the winter in order to produce spring growth.  Previously, most peach varieties needed 300-500 chill hours, but due to decades' worth of research at the University of Florida, there are now some subtropical varieties that can produce peaches with less than 50 chill hours and can grow as far south as Miami.

Indian River County receives approximately 100-200 chill hours during the winter, and although cost per acre is higher than it is for citrus, peaches can be a viable economic alternative for some producers.  The main reason for this is timing-harvest season for Florida peaches is mid-March through the end of May, which puts our peaches entering the market after the South American harvest is over but before the Georgia and California markets have
begun. If you would like to see samples of these low-chill, subtropical varieties of peaches The UF/IFAS Indian River Research and Education Center located in Ft. Pierce has a peach demonstration and research orchard that you can visit, prearranged appointments are recommended.  If a homeowner needs more advice, all of the county extension offices
in our area have plant clinics with trained Master Gardener volunteers eager and willing to help you with your questions.  And in a few years, if a bag of fresh-picked, deliciously juicy, Indian River-grown peaches mysteriously appear on the steps of the extension office, we will know exactly what to do with them.
