It's Chocolate Milk Shake Day!
I don't know how I've missed this special day all these years and I don't know how it got started, but it's a good excuse to have a shake! Chocolate Milk Shake Day is an opportunity for chocoholics to savor. The downside to this is that even a small chocolate shake at McDonald's is 580 calories! You're better off mixing one up at home by simply combining a little skim milk with some low fat chocolate ice cream, add a little extra chocolate syrup, and mix it well in a blender. That way you can compute the calories yourself. Having one instead of lunch might work!
I'll be on the road again this weekend, or really in the sky, flying to Boston to celebrate my husband's birthday with some dear friends. The weather is cooling off and the temperature at night is in the 60's. Fall is making an entrance and pumpkins and fall flowers abound. I can't wait.
While I am having fun in Boston, I will miss some of the fun that will be taking place here in Vero. A few things that you shouldn't miss on Saturday are: The Food Truck Frenzy at Riverside Park, Canoe excursion at the Environmental Learning Center, Comedy Corner at Sunrise Theatre, and Farmers Market on Ocean Drive. Check out the calendar at the end of the newsletter to get more detailed information and to see a complete listing of all events. Enjoy yourselves FLASHERS and get out and take advantage of the things our community has to offer.

KELLY WARD
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
by Ashley Brown Kelly Ward has been a member of the Vero Beach community her entire life. Yes a NATIVE! She has been volunteering in Vero for over 35 years and has continually given her time for the betterment of others. Her love for others has led her to become involved with the American Cancer Society, Riverside Children's Theatre (Festival of Trees), Ballet Vero Beach, and the Firefighters Fair. Kelly's main motivation behind volunteering is "It feels good, and it helps others and makes them happy. I had good mentors who taught me early-on the importance of getting involved and giving back!"
For her inspiration Kelly draws from our community leaders, who encourage participation and offer fun ways to get involved. However there were so many people who have given her inspiration that she couldn't name just one! "I am grateful..." Kelly said, "...that there are people who will take the lead and gather others together for so many good causes. Advice that she can give to others is to get involved and take action.
Kelly's hobbies include photography, exploring (geocaching), and family time. She has a husband, Tim, and daughter, Shanna, who is 25. Kelly has received two awards, the Pillar of Character Award and the Citizen of Distinction Award, but said that her greatest accomplishment was raising her daughter with her husband at her side.
Thank you, Kelly, for setting an excellent example for the impact that some hard work and inspiration can have on others! Your positive outlook on life and good humor have made you a beloved member of this community and has enriched the place we all call home!

Organizers of the 2014 Miss America pageant couldn't wait until Saturday night's traditional "show us your shoes" parade to unveil the state-themed footwear the contestants will wear. This is one of the pageant's most beloved traditions. The competition returned to the Boardwalk in Atlantic City where the competition first began in 1921. On Tuesday, the state-themed shoes of all 53 contestants were unveiled. Miss Florida's shoes depicted alligators and Miss Indiana's had basketballs and hoops. Don't miss the crowning of the new Miss America this Sunday night's nationally televised broadcast.

 IMPROVING CURB APPEAL
Improve your home's value and sell ability by sprucing up your yard even on a budget. You don't have to wait to sell your house to up its curb appeal. Why not enjoy some sprucing up while you live in your home. Walk across the street and turn around and look back - nice? As you view your home, use a potential buyer's eye. We don't all have magazine photo worthy yards and some of us have black thumbs and not green - but there is so much you can do with little effort, for big impact. Look at a few houses and yards you like and ask what gives them their appeal? Is it the color, the clean look, the neatness, the well cared for lawn. Whatever it is try to duplicate it. Create a welcoming entrance with one or two big pots filled with colorful plants. Make sure all landscape is free of weeds and bushes are trimmed neatly. Use mulch in your flower beds for added appeal. After you get your green thumb working, you might also follow these suggestions...
First clean up - nothing laying around, no broken toys; if everything looks dirty and dingy - plan on pressure washing the house, walkways and driveway, if you have a patio, clean that too! How is your front door - need paint? Poor maintenance outside can sometimes be a turn off to the inside. Check also the mailbox area - outside lights and anywhere you think people will look. Now cross the street and look again - did you improve your house and landscaping? I'm sure you did and that you are on the right track!
Call me, Janyne Kenworthy for a pre-sale review to help you sell at top dollar.

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
A man was walking through the park one day when he saw another man sitting on a bench and snapping his fingers constantly. Puzzled, he stopped and asked why he was doing that.
"I'm keeping the elephants away," the fellow replied.
"But I don't see any elephants," the first man said.
"I know," the fellow said. "It's amazing how well it works!"

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
SALTED PRETZEL CARAMEL BROWNIES
Caramel Ingredients
1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter (1 stick)
1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (36-40% butterfat content)
3 tablespoons water
1/4 cup (60 ml) light corn syrup
1 cup (200 grams) sugar
1/2 teaspoon course or flaked sea salt
Additional Ingredients:
Large bag of pretzels
1 box of brownie mix
Grease pan and layer pretzels in the bottom of pan. Prepare the brownie mix according to directions on the box and pour over pretzels. Bake according to box instructions. While brownies are baking prepare the caramel topping by following the instructions below.
- Cut butter into 8 pieces then combine with heavy cream in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes until hot and butter has melted. Set aside to use later.
In a small saucepan combine the water and corn syrup. Then, add the sugar, but try your best not to splatter the sugar up the sides of the pan. Now, use a spoon to gently stir the sugar into the water and corn syrup, just moistening the sugar.
Heat over medium heat until the sugar has come to a boil. Then, cover with a lid for 1 minute. This adds steam/moisture to the pan, so any sugar that may have stuck to the sides of the pan melts and falls back into the boiling sugar.
Remove lid then attach a candy thermometer to the side of the saucepan. Then, cook sugar for 5 to 10 minutes, until the sugar reaches a temperature of 320 degrees F (160 degrees C). At this temperature, the sugar will take on a light amber color around the edges of the pan.
The moment the sugar reaches 320 degrees F (160 degrees C), carefully pour about a sixth of the butter and cream mixture then stir, using the base of the candy thermometer to incorporate it. Repeat with the remaining cream and butter (adding a sixth of it at a time then stirring). The sugar will bubble violently as you add the butter and cream - so do this carefully and slowly to prevent the mixture from bubbling over the sides of the saucepan.
By adding the cream and butter, the temperature will drop. Now, continue cooking for another 5 to 10 minutes, until the caramel reaches a temperature of 240 degrees F (115 degrees C). This will create a soft caramel, if you want slightly harder caramel, bring the temperature closer to 245 degrees F (118 degrees C).
Pour caramel topping over cooled brownies and top with a sprinkling of coarse salt.
