 FALL OFFICIALLY BEGINS SUNDAY

When does fall begin? The Autumnal Equinox brings autumn on September 22nd at 4:44 P.M.

The word equinox comes from the Latin words for "equal night." The fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the Sun crosses the celestial equator. (The line running horizontally across the center of the Equatorial Sky Chart.)  From here on out, the temperatures should begin to drop and the days will start to get shorter than the nights.

There are quite a few fun events happening this week. Please take a moment to check out the posts below. Make plans to patronize a few of the events. Why not gather several friends and head on out.  That's what makes Vero Beach such a wonderful place to call home.  We all really do support each other and the efforts that are taken to make our community a better place.

Enjoy!

Along the Road: Paintings of the Highwaymen
On Exhibit Through September 28th

Patron Sponsor: Judy and Bill Schneebeck

The Highwaymen were a legendary group of young black painters, largely self-taught, who painted colorful Florida scenes during the late 1950s, through the 1960s and into the 1970s. Selling their paintings from the trunks of their cars, the Highwaymen provided lively seascapes, landscapes, and a few still life paintings to travelers and residents along U.S. Highway 1 around Fort Pierce. These tropical scenes of birds, palms, Poinciana trees, old oaks, and cabbage palms, often set along the Indian River or near the beach, are eagerly sought by collectors today. The earliest of the Highwaymen, Alfred Hair, met the prominent landscape painter A. E. "Beanie" Backus while he was still in high school. Backus welcomed him into his studio and gave the aspiring painter a few lessons. Another young painter, Harold Newton, also followed Backus's example and attracted others to take up brush and paint. Eventually, the original, first-generation Highwaymen numbered 26 painters, although only one was a woman, Mary Ann Carroll. As of 2012, eighteen of the original artists were still alive. There have been others who adopted the style (some of them relatives of the first generation Highwaymen), but only the original 26 were inducted into the Florida Department of State's Artists Hall of Fame. In the eyes of these visionaries, Florida became the paradise we all dream about.
