Vero Beach, Fl - Ed. 09.26.2013

editor's note poka-dot                       GOOD NEWS!

We've  been busy this week moving my Mom from Miami to her new place here in Vero. Many of you know  that our family built a vacation home on the beach in 1974.  "Suzie's Sandcastle" has been the site for many special times and reunions over the years and that is how we all came to know and love Vero. My sister and niece already live here; another sister is living in Ft. Pierce and now Mom will be here, too. Seems only fitting since she is the one responsible for our 'love affair' with Vero. Someone once said, "Home is wherever Mom is." I agree with that and I've passed it on to my own three grown children. I hope they will always come back to Vero because Mom and Dad are here, and now grandma 'Sunshine' will be here, too!

When Mom first built the beach house in '74, Vero was just a sleepy little town with some pretty groves and very little activity. There was no Mall and she did a lot of shopping at the Woolworth store that used to be on Miracle Mile. Now she can't get over how much there is to do and see. For a town our size, it is pretty amazing to have such excellent theater, stores, museums and so many special events. Here at Flash, we try to keep you up-to-date through our newsletter, as well as, with our free paper calendar. We are now publishing and distributing 10,000 of those each month. You will be able to pick up your October copy next week at many locations around town. Meanwhile, enjoy all the activities listed below and I ask that you continue to share FLASH with all of your friends!

WEEKEND PROJECT
.
Tin Can Yard Lanterns
Next week we will usher in October. Hard to believe! That means Halloween is right around the corner.  This is a fun and easy...though a little time consuming... weekend project that will add a festive atmosphere to your Halloween night.  Don't let the leaf pattern pictured here limit you.  You can easily run a Google search for 'Halloween clip art' and find pumpkins, cats, witches, owls etc.  How much fun to have an assortment for tables or to line your walk.  If you opt for the later...you might prefer to use battery operated lights rather than a candle. Click Here for detailed directions.

  TODAY'S CHUCKLE

 .

THE ELEVATOR

An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and back together again. The boy asked, "What is this, Father?" The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don't know what it is." While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, an old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then as these numbers began to light in reverse order. The walls opened up again and a beautiful 24 year old woman stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son, "Go get your Mother".

  RECIPE OF THE WEEK

  EASY BISQUICK BEER BATTER

If you've never tried this, you're going to love it! This tempura-like batter (similar to the type you get in Chinese restaurants) is good for all fried foods. Try fish, fritters, chicken bites, whole mushrooms, broccoli florets, onion rings or just about anything. (Have you heard that some folks are now frying mini Snicker bars? That is just over the top!   Who 'really' needs that?)

Ingredients

1 cup Original Bisquick mix

1/2 cup regular or nonalcoholic beer

1 large egg

1/2 teaspoon salt

In medium bowl, mix all ingredients with hand beater until smooth. (If batter is too thick, stir in additional beer, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.) Fry your ingredient in hot oil, turning once. (Time will depend on the food you are frying, but most should be done in 3-4 minutes.) Remove with slotted spoon; drain on paper towels.

The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Featuring the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers, the exhibition includes remarkable images from the Society's core mission areas: exploration, wildlife, cultures, science, and nature. The more than 50 images in the exhibition plumb the depth of National Geographic's image collection to highlight the loveliest and most appealing photographs from this impressive archive. The result is an experience of visual delight, centering on stunning landscapes and quaint locales. The exhibition makes one ponder what creates beauty in a photograph, and illustrates the power of these images to "lift us out of a jaded world and make us gasp." Simply Beautiful was assembled by award-winning National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths, who wrote in the book that accompanies the show: "Photographs have given us visual proof that the world is grander than we imagined, that there is beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything."
