editor's note poka-dot

Hello FLASHERS!

It's been a week since most of the kids got out of school. I don't know about you, but it sure feels like summer is already in full swing. The official start of summer is tomorrow, June 21st.  My hope is that I can pull ahead a little bit over the next couple months and by doing so will  free up some time to get the creative juices flowing as I plan FLASH for the fall. I will be mailing a survey within the week and I would greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond with candor. I truly do appreciate all of the feedback I receive from our FLASHERS week after week. You always have my ear and I do try to incorporate your feedback when I create FLASH. I also bask in your many compliments ... You humble me and bring a smile to my face! I am always glad to hear that FLASH has put a smile on your face and perhaps even enabled you to find an easier way to do something, find your creative side, helped you find fun things to enjoy. That is what it is all about! Helping each other on life's journey and hopefully making 'the ride' an incredible and more enjoyable one as we learn a thing or two along the way. Here is the first quote of many more to come within my Editor's Note. It was spoken by Michael Dell.

"Try never to be the smartest person in the room. And if you are, I suggest you invite smarter people or try to find a different room. In professional circles it's called networking. In organizations it's called team building. And in life it's called family, friends, and community. We are all gifts to each other, and my own growth as a leader has shown me again and again that the most rewarding experiences come from my relationships."

ENJOY LIFE FLASHERS and HELP EACH OTHER ALONG THE WAY!

5 TIPS TO GIVE YOUR HANDS 'A HAND'

There are so many products on the market today that keep us looking our best and take a few years off of our appearance.  Don't forget your hands! Make sure your 'beauty care' pampers your hands as well. Here are five tips for keeping them looking younger.

1) Treat your hands like your face and apply sunscreen and seek shade.

2) Exfoliate with this home-made mixture that you can easily make. Mix equal parts of olive oil and sugar and you will have a nice scrub.

3) Moisturize regularly

4) Wear light weight gloves when driving.

5) Keep your nails looking nice and clean with regular manicures.

WEEKEND PROJECT
Here is a useful weekend project. Repurpose a bed by turning it into a corner bench for the kids. If you don't have an old bed just sittin'  around, you will certainly be able to find one at a local thrift shop. So many treasures are out there just waiting to be scooped up! So ... Go scoop!

Children's Art Festival
If you have never planned an outing to the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area... Plan to do so this summer! It is an incredible experience and one you won't forget...especially if you forget your bug spray! It is composed of more than 365 acres along the Indian River Lagoon in southern Indian River County. Comprising a mixture of distinctly different Florida habitats from wetlands to pine scrub, ORCA is open to the public to experience a bit of natural Florida the way it used to be. Visit the website for more info!

HOME INSPECTIONS AND DOCUMENTS
If you have made an offer on a home that has been accepted, you should get a professional home inspection before you finalize the deal. When you have set a date for the inspections make sure that you are there with the inspector.  By being there for the inspection you create the opportunity for the inspector to give you a much more colorful commentary on the ins and outs of the house...usually much more information than you can ever obtain from the written report.  They will often show you where emergency shutoffs are for your utilities and even help you figure out how to operate things. Once the inspection report comes in, you must read it! Make sure you make the effort to follow any instructions made by the inspector. If the report says you need to get a specialist out to look at something electrical...do it. Better to find out any problems now rather than after you have purchased the home. If there is a Home Owners' Association make sure you read their documents. Ask questions about the things you don't understand and don't hesitate to keep asking questions until you do understand. The more you can find out about the home before the closing the less problems you are likely to encounter down the road and you will be able to enjoy your home!

FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK
Solution for Smelly Shoes
  • With the temperatures beginning to soar, we are all undoubtedly perspiring a bit more. This can lead to some pretty smelly shoes. Here is a great tip! Use dryer sheets to freshen stinky shoes. This is a good idea for your gym bag too. Don't use the unpleasant odor as an excuse to not stay active. Continue to do what you have to do and just thank heaven that your shoes and gym bag no longer have to smell to 'high heaven'! Just stuff some dryer sheets in them and leave them there over night. The sheets will absorb the odor and your friends and family will thank you.

CRUISE THIS WEEKEND!

Here's a terrific website that offers discounted prices for unsold cabins for 3 nights in the Bahamas. If you're free to make last minute plans for an upcoming weekend, you may be able to purchase an interior cabin for as little as $169 per person or one on the oceanside for $199! You might want to bookmark this one! WARNING!...Did you know
DANGER AND PREVENTION OF FOOD BACTERIA

Organic means that no pesticides were used, but it does not protect against bacteria and may even have more than conventional produce. According to a current report from Yahoo News, a gentleman in California contracted Hepatitis A  from eating a brand of frozen berries. (The brand has since been recalled.)  And we have all heard of the spread of E. coli infections on cruise ships. Hepatitis A, Salmonella and E. coli can be  caused by the ingestion of a microscopic amount of fecal matter from an infected person, typically a food worker who hasn't washed their hands. Freezing will not kill bacteria if the product was infected prior to freezing, however thoroughly cooking will.  The FDA recommends thoroughly washing  all raw fruits and vegetables under cold running water, using a brush on those that are firm and drying with a paper towel. Produce with a lot of nooks and crannies like cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce or sprouts should be soaked for 1 to 2 minutes in cold clean water. Commercial washes are not recommended by the FDA.  Even if you plan to peel the produce before eating, it is still important to wash it first so dirt and bacteria aren't transferred from the knife onto the fruit or vegetable. Also be sure to wash cutting boards, counter tops and utensils. (Plastic cutting boards are good because they can be put through the dishwasher.)

WHY WOMEN MAY LIVE LONGER THAN MEN

According to the Assisted Living Federation of America, less than 15% of assisted living residents are men. This is largely due to life expectancy. The life expectancy difference between men and women is well known. According to the World Health Organization, American women as a rule live at least five years longer than men. Scientists have been pondering the discrepancy in life expectancy between the sexes for decades. One reason men live shorter lives, experts say, is because they have a propensity for high risk behaviors such as alcohol abuse, smoking, driving recklessly, and being in war. Some of the latest research indicates differences in the male immune system may be a big part of the reason men live shorter lives, too. Even though heart attacks are the number one killer of women, however men are more likely to succumb to a heart attack earlier in life than women.
