Hello FLASHERS!
My the weeks just seem to keep peeling away! The temperatures are rising and summer is in the air! Memorial Day is this weekend and that sort of marks the onset of summer for me. As a child it was always a time when we would gather many families together at The Silver Sands Motel on Key Biscayne in Miami. The kids would have races in the pool, dive deep to retrieve the shiny coins that had been tossed into the pool, and struggle during a greased pig competition. (Which is a greased whole watermelon tossed into a pool.) It was all boys in at one time and then all girls. Whoever was able to lift the slippery melon out first was its instant proud owner! I never won! Not to worry ... there was ALWAYS plenty of ice cold watermelon for everyone. They were chilled in new galvanized garbage cans loaded with ice. They were sliced into big wedge smiles that I just loved back then and still do to this very day! Those childhood days bring back such fond memories and I guess slowly engrained in me a more celebratory tone to the weekend than the intended more somber remembrance of our 'fallen' heroes...Something I was reminded of this past week. Though I am a strong believer in family and friend time together and think it vitally important, I believe more profoundly in the importance of remembering and honoring our heroes on this special weekend. Please fly your flag high and proud this weekend and carve some time out of your day to attend one of the ceremonies you will find in the post below. I am certain that the wonderful Military Mom's Prayer Group would love to see all of us at their weekly get together tonight from 5:00 - 6:00 at Christ Church behind Outback. Why not stop by and say a personal thank you to these courageous moms. You need not be a military mom to attend and they ALWAYS welcome and encourage others to join them.
Remember to say a special thank you and a prayer for all of our incredibly brave men and women in uniform who risk so much every single day. For those with family in the Military, this holiday is so much more than an opportunity to BBQ or enjoy a day off from work. It is a time to remember those who have served this country and in doing so have simultaneously and gallantly served each and every one of us; providing us the freedom to enjoy each other and special moments together. May we all stay mindful of that. GOD BLESS THOSE SPECIAL PEOPLE WHO WEAR OUR UNIFORM and God bless those families who have had someone pay the ultimate price! We owe you so much and we honor you this weekend!!!

SO ... YOU DIDN'T WIN THE BIG LOTTERY
WE'RE SORRY.....TRY THIS! FLORIDA TREASURE HUNT!
You just might have money waiting to be claimed?
No, we aren't talking about the sunken Spanish ships that rest on the ocean floor just off our beach. This one is a lot easier and you won't even get wet! Keep reading and give this a try. More people than not...who we have told ... have found some money they didn't know was owed them. The State of Florida maintains a website that allows you to see if the state is holding lost money for you. You may not think you have lost any money, but the state currently holds over $1 billion dollars in unclaimed property from dormant accounts of banks, insurance and utility companies , as well as stock dividends and other checks never cashed. The Post Office no longer forwards mail a year after a move. If it is undeliverable or is returned to the sender, it will eventually wind up in this account. It is deposited in the state school fund and used for public education, but there is no statute of limitations and a person may claim it at anytime. One of our FLASH subscribers found over $800.00. Another found cash owed to a deceased parent from over forty years ago! If you have moved, you may not have received refunds from your utility deposits. If you have married, the money may be in your previous name. The state also holds tangible property such as jewelry and coins from abandoned safety deposit boxes. All states have an unclaimed property division, so if you're new to Florida, you may want to check your previous state's records. Click on Florida's website www.fltreasurehunt.org and follow the simple directions to 'stake your claim'. Good hunting!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE
.
Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 10 to 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, sharp-minded and obviously demonstrating the company's "Older Person Friendly" policy. One day the boss called him into the office for a talk.
.
"Charley, I have to tell you, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but your being late so often is bothersome."
.
"Yes sir, I understand your concern and I will try harder," Charley replied.
.
Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, "I know you're retired from the US NAVY. What did they say to you there if you showed up late in the morning?"
The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin,
"They usually saluted and said, Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?"
.
NOTE: We don't know if this story is true, but we hope so and we thought it was appropriate for Memorial Day Weekend!

HOME BUYING .... POOL OR NO POOL?
That is a question that is personal and strictly a matter of choice! Some people in Florida could hardly live without a pool and others say they don't want the bother! A pool is a choice for the buyer. - Do you have small children?- They all should be taught to swim whether or not you have a pool - Florida has many, many pools and ponds available for small children to fall into - Swim lessons and safety are mandatory! If you buy a home with a pool you are required by law required to have a safety fence around the pool and/or your property. The home you bought should have one already installed. There are other items available to keep your children safe - locks on the doors leading to the patio area, bells or chimes when those doors get opened, sensors for the water that let a signal off when something falls in the water, a full cover either hard or soft for the pool water area - the choices are as endless as the brands! But with small kids, even if they are neighbors' kids, some safety device is mandatory, legally and for peace of mind! In general a pool is not hard to care for; depends on the age of the pool and how and when and with what extras it was installed. The thing to know is to keep the chemicals in balance, too much chlorine or too little can be a problem as can too high PH or too low PH! Many newer pools have automatic chlorinators so you put the chlorine tablets in to a tube that has water flow and gives the pool chlorine as the filter runs. There are also ways to have a salt system in your pool - you add the salt and it generates chlorine to your pool water. The sides of your pool can benefit from a regular brushing - and algaecide can be added for maintenance instead of only when you see a problem rising. Your filter and pump should a have a timer to set to a regular schedule of daylight hours to run and your pool can be an easy asset to your home. If you feel like you will let things fall through the cracks - contact a local pool service and they will determine a maintenance schedule for you - then you can swim with peace of mind and no work! In Florida the care and maintenance is relatively inexpensive and takes any worry or work off your back - write a check and leave the work to someone else!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
FROZEN PEANUT BUTTER BANANA TREATS
Here's a healthy frozen treat from NBC nutritionist Joy Bauer. A good dessert for Memorial Day Weekend that your family is going to love, and only 175 calories for a whole banana! Make a batch and keep frozen for those hot summer days ahead!
Peel and slice a banana length-wise and spread both sides with peanut butter.
Sprinkle mini dark chocolate chips or spread Nutella on one side and put the two halves back together. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for at least 4 hours. Enjoy!
NOTE: You can also make these as little frozen 'bites' by slicing the banana into small rounds and filling according to the above directions. If you plan to serve them the same day, you can freeze them uncovered in the freezer.

Saint Edward's Student Accepted on Antarctic Expedition
Archie Rea, a sophomore at Saint Edward's School, has been accepted into Students on Ice, an international youth experiential education program to Antarctica to learn about environmental issues. The expedition takes place December 27, 2013 through January 10, 2014. Every year the program accepts less than 100 students from around the world to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
'Students on Ice' is a unique initiative dedicated to taking students from around the world on unique learning expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The ship-based International Polar Year Antarctic Expedition employs modern icebreakers as home. It is the only organization in the world that offers an opportunity for students to be immersed in 'hands on' research activities and lectures, taught by polar experts, educators, and researchers.
