HELLO FLASHERS!
Wow! It has been quite a week. This time of year is always busy for young families as you begin to close out a school year. Testing is taking place, parties are happening, planning for summer camps, vacations, teacher gifts ... all while maintaining the every-day needs and tasks that single handily seem to keep us on overload.  How is it that we always find room to add to that list? Well, I hope all of our FLASH mothers enjoyed a respite on Mother's Day! You deserve it!
My Mother's Day was a special one as I watched my youngest graduate from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. We have enjoyed a week of family time at our cabin in the woods. We decided years ago to NOT hook up to those things that keep us tied to reality every moment of the day and to keep our cabin as an escape. Time here has given me time to pause and reflect. I look at my daughter and wonder where the time went. Why it truly was only yesterday I towed this adorable, barefoot, precious, little girl around on my hip as we ran around keeping up with life together. Celebrating Mother's Day and watching her graduate all in the same weekend was bittersweet. I so enjoyed those mothering days when my three children were little. Our roles have shifted quite a lot over time but as I reflect and write this...I am receiving a text from her while she sits in her new position at the Children's Museum in Macon. She is  asking for suggestions to help with a new fund raiser they are planning.  I smile! She still needs me! I reply and life goes on and I am enjoying the journey tremendously!
Enjoy the journey FLASHERS! My hope is that FLASH helps you to do just that as you peruse the issue each week and find a nugget  that makes you smile, provides a tip to help make your life easier, or gives you information on an event that you will plan to attend .... helping you build more memories! Two things NOT TO MISS this weekend are:
The GREAT DUCK DERBY on Sunday and for those young tennis enthusiasts...'Kids on the Court' sponsored by Mardy Fish Children's Foundation at the Vero Beach Tennis Club. You can get more info on both in the posts below.

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

What is the Difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

If you've ever wondered, "what's the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?" You're not the only one. Here is a quick explanation.
BOTOX

Botox is the #1 cosmetic procedure performed around the world each year.  It is used to treat wrinkles primarily of the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. The procedure involves injecting purified botulinum toxin into specific muscles of the face, weakening these muscles so that they cannot contract the skin; it is this repeated contracting that causes the skin to wrinkle. A skilled physician knows exactly where and how much botulinum toxin to inject to achieve wrinkle reduction while maintaining a natural look.

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse) are also used to correct wrinkles, but their primary
purpose is to plump facial features (lips, cheeks, chin, and other areas) that have lost volume due to aging.
Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into the skin. Their effects last  for 9 to 18 months and
while present, attract renewed moisture and plumpness to the cells, and also encourage collagen
formation around the site as well.  Fillers are commonly used in the lines from the corner of the nose
down to the mouth and the lines from the corners of the mouth to the jaw line creating a softer more
youthful appearance.

COMBINATION THERAPY
Botox and Dermal Fillers are often used in combination to achieve the best results.  This is sometimes
referred to as a liquid facelift.

TRANSFORM YOUR BRACELET
INTO A NECKLACE

This is a great idea that FLASH loves!  For a sentimental graduation gift, I took my two daughters gold baby bracelets and matched the chain as closely as possible and turned their little bracelets into a wearable keepsake that they both cherish! You don't have to match the chain. You can use a ribbon as pictured here or you can pick up some fashion leather cord in a color at a local bead shop.

6 JUNK FOOD MAKEOVERS

This is an interesting article on how you can convert some of your favorite junk foods into healthy choices without losing flavor...pizzas, burritos, ice cream sundaes...yum! The burger tip is a little weird, but could be worth a try. Click Here

TOO DISTRACTED? UN-CLUTTER YOUR BRAIN

From nonstop email to ringing phones, life's daily interruptions can leave you feeling scatterbrained. If you're having difficulty focusing while reading, or even talking with someone, because the kids, pets, phone, TV, flashing e-mail, and more are driving you to distraction, don't blame the interruptions. It turns out that a prime reason for midlife concentration lapses and late-life memory problems is an increasing inability to filter out the clutter -- both human and digital distractions. The REAL AGE website will help you to sort the clutter. Click Here

FISH CALENDAR
(The darker the fish ~ The better the fishing!)

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
STRAWBERRY TIRAMISU

  • 1 cup strawberry jam
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup Grand Marnier, plus one tablespoon extra
  • 1-1/4 pounds mascarpone, at room temperature
  • 1-1/3 cups whipping cream (35%)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ladyfingers or Savoiardi (you'll need about 50)
  • 1-1/2 to 2 pounds strawberries, washed, dried and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon zest
  1. In a bowl, combine the jam, water, orange juice and half of the Grand Marnier. Mix well. The mixture should be liquidy. Set aside
  2. In a bowl, combine the mascarpone and the remaining Grand Marnier. Mix well. Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the whipping cream with the sugar, vanilla extract and remaining 1 tablespoon of Grand Marnier. Beat until stiff peaks form.
  4. Take a quarter of the whipped cream mixture and stir into the mascarpone to lighten the mascarpone. Then add the remaining whipped cream mixture and fold gently into the mascarpone mixture. Set aside.
  5. Spread 1/2 of the jam mixture in the bottom of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. The mixture will be very liquidy but don't worry about it. The ladyfingers will absorb the liquid.
  6. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the lemon zest over the jam mixture.
  7. Line the bottom of the dish with ladyfingers, making sure to fill in every spot. If you have to snap the ladyfingers into smaller pieces in order to make them fit.
  8. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture evenly over the ladyfingers.
  9. Layer half of the sliced strawberries over the mascarpone.
  10. Spread the remaining jam mixture over the strawberries.
  11. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of lemon zest over the strawberries and jam.
  12. Create a second layer of ladyfingers over the strawberries and jam. Again be sure to completely fill in the layer.
  13. Spread the remaining mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
  14. Layer the remaining strawberries on top.
  15. Chill for at least 12 hours before serving.
  16. Enjoy!

Note:  It is recommended to chill for 24 hours. Chilling for 12 hours will do, but if you can hold off devouring this dessert, the extra time will really help it set.
