THE BUSY MONTH OF MAY!
It's hard to believe that May is already here, isn't it? So much for things slowing down ... Not only is time FLASHING by, there is also so much still going on this month. You can celebrate something almost every day! Saturday, be sure to turn on your TV to watch the Kentucky Derby. You might even want to join the fun at Blue Star Wine Bar. They have some fun and special festivities planned. (see post below) NBC will begin coverage at 4 p.m., with the race scheduled for 7 p.m. (Our family always gets together with a few friends for this one. We draw names for the horses and everyone puts in a dollar. Winner takes all!) Sunday is Cinco de Mayo, celebrated by our Latin friends, but a day that all have come to enjoy. Next Tuesday, May 7th, is National Teachers' Appreciation Day, so do something special for your children's teachers, or you might want to take some goodies to the Teachers' Lounge for all to share. And next Sunday, May 12th is Mother's Day, so start planning for Mom now. Pointe West has a beautiful and tasty brunch you might want to check out. The month will be coming to an end in a blink of an eye and will be ushered out on the heels of Memorial Day! The Navy Seal Museum has a special observance planned. To see all of the other things that we observe and celebrate in May Click Here. Who knew it was Asparagus Month, Flower Month, and even National Bar-B-Que Month. That only scratches the surface. APPS FOR DRIVERS AND TEENSWe all know the dangers of texting and driving, yet we see it all the time and might even indulge ourselves. Well, we know it is a very scary thing and should never be done! From young drivers who are still learning the ropes to older drivers who need reminders about staying safe on the road, this link from Insurance Panda, features an app for everybody.
Coming in at the top of the list is Key2SafeDriving. This app focuses on a very serious topic-texting and driving. The app works by installing a device underneath the steering wheel in the vehicle. When driving, the smart phone will enter "safe driving mode," which in turn will prevent its owner from texting. The clever app also automatically sends replies to incoming texts and is tamper-proof. In fact, if a crafty teen tries to get around the system, mom and dad will immediately be notified.

GREAT GRADUATION GIFT!
This is from our archives. But worth a post again as FLASH believes it is a gift that any grad will love for years to come! Soon it will be graduation time and if your grad has a collection of T-shirts from activities in which he or she has participated, then this is the gift for you! You can have them made into quilts to treasure forever! The shirts are cut into squares, both front and back if desired, then mounted on fabric to create a quilt in whatever size you'd like. FLASH loves to promote our local 'mom and pop' stores and we found a local spot that can help you with this sentimental gift. Give Marilou at Marilou's Quilting and Sewing Center a call. She will be happy to help you with this great gift! 772-589-0011

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
The first full week in May is always National Teacher Appreciation Week. If you have a child in school, plan a special surprise for your child's teacher...a special lunch is always nice. One thing that was always a hit at my children's school was when the parents contributed $1 each which enabled us to bring in a local masseuse and Starbucks one morning. Talk with your PTA and offer to help them recognize the wonderful teachers for all that they do.

HERBERT THE TURTLE RETURNS TO VERO In a joint effort with Saint Edward's School in Vero Beach, a sea turtle injured in the Indian River lagoon during the Saint Edward's water camp last summer was rescued by a crew of camp counselors who kept the turtle stable until rescue crews arrived. Given the name Herbert by his rescuers, the turtle was transported to Sea World where he has spent a year in rehabilitation. Last week Herbert returned to the ocean of the Vero Beach coast where first grade students from Saint Edward's excitedly waited his arrival. Staff from Sea World accompanied Herbert along with Saint Edward's students and Coach Jeff Lamscha who was present throughout the rescue. Sea Rescue, a TV show, will film the story.
