Hello FLASHERS!

It has been an exciting week in our community and the good of people has been exemplified over and over!  In our 'Scene Around Town' section you will see multiple posts showing the combined granting of over ONE MILLION DOLLARS to local non profits!  That is amazing and undoubtedly will have tremendous impact!

In light of the explosions this week at the Boston Marathon it is comforting and encouraging to know that the over-riding essence of the human spirit is incredibly good. As is often the case...A horrific act is the inertia that can bring about the most brilliant, luminous, sparkling, and radiant acts of human kindness that serve as a beacon letting us know that evil will NEVER ultimately be capable of overtaking good! I found two quotes that I thought I would pass on. The first is from the late Mr. Rogers. I think this a perfect quote and exactly what parents should be telling children of all ages! Remember that what we choose to focus on is what overtakes us and creates who we are! Direct your focus.
Mr. Rogers - American Educator and host of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."
Patton Oswalt - Comedian - wrote:
... "If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak."

Thank you FLASHERS for being 'a white blood cell' in our community... For helping fellow FLASHERS who post on our bulletin board, for your heart-felt shout outs wishing us a happy FLASH anniversary, and for your loyalty and openings each week! You are so incredibly appreciated! If you are by chance looking for a way to make a difference this week....I have a couple of suggestions.
1) Share FLASH and help us reach more people with our positive news!
2) ADOPT A DUCK for the Great Duck Derby and earn a chance to win $2,500. You will be helping Treasure Coast Community Health provide care to women in our community.  FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
Sponsored by: Center for Facial Aesthetics      banner beauty tip

                                                                         Topical Vitamin C and Skin

One of the darlings of any anti-aging skin care regimen, Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) can now be
found in creams, serums, powders and even eye and lip treatments. What's good to know

is that Vitamin C is an effective ingredient and delivers many benefits to skin including:

1. an increase in collagen synthesis, which helps to thicken the skin
2. antioxidant activity which reduces skin damage caused by free radicals that can be generated by pollution, the sun and cigarette smoke
3. an effective depigmenting agent at concentrations 5% or higher
4. an improvement in the appearance of sun damaged skin
5. fighting against tumor formation, which may help to slow down development of skin cancers
6. increasing moisture content of skin by thickening skin, thereby preventing moisture loss
Concentrations over 10%, but not greater than 20%, offer the most benefit. Though well tolerated
by most skin types, sensitivity is reduced by sticking to lower concentrations, between 10 and 15%.
One of the main drawbacks of Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is that it is quite unstable. When exposed to
air, Vitamin C preparations that are not formulated correctly will oxidize (break down) and become
ineffective as well as potentially harmful. This is because oxidized Vitamin C may increase the formation
of free radicals which lead to skin damage. Oxidized Vitamin C will take on a yellowish tinge so look
for clear solutions or white creams and powders, a good indication that your formulation is stable
and therefore, effective and safe. Look for products from reputable manufacturers ensuring that your

formulation is safe and effective.

Perhaps his next painting will be one of his granddaughter? 'Dubya' became a grandfather when his daughter Jenna Bush Hager gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl this past weekend. The new family addition is named for both of her grandmothers, Margaret Laura "Mila" Hager.
HOW TO AMEND A TAX RETURN
Say you find out after filing your return this week that you missed a credit or deduction that you were entitled to. What can you do? The answer...File an amended return. An amended return does not mean you have to redo your taxes. All you have to do is submit form 1040X. You have three years after filing to amend your return and claim a credit. The Kiplenger newsletter lists some of the most commonly overlooked credits that include: childcare for children under 13 years old while you work or look for work. There is no income limit to qualify, but the lower the income the greater the credit. Tomorrow our Special Summer Camp issue will be published and there are credits that can be taken for summer camps. If you would like to learn more about credits that are frequently missed Click Here.

Women + Fashion + Lunch = SUCCESS

The Original Welcome Wagon Club of Sebastian's fashion show and luncheon was a big success! More than 185 women attended the second annual luncheon and fashion show on April 6, 2013.  Peggy Andrie and Toni Falk were co-chairs of the event entitled "Fly Into Spring" which had a kite motif designed by Joan Kimmel and her committee members.  Twenty-seven fashions supplied by Bealls of Vero Beach were introduced by Toni Falk and modeled by those pictured here. The proceeds from this event will be donated to various local organizations such as Camp Haven, Sebastian Elementary School Backpack Program, Safe Space, and scholarships awarded to qualified seniors from Sebastian River High School

Grant winners, Pat Geyer, Camp Haven; Vicki Soule, Treasure Coast Community Health, Inc.; Karen Deigl, Senior Resource Association Inc., and Judy Miller, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of IRC cheer in celebration of their victory for the four $100,000 Impact 100 grants.
IMAPCT 100 AWARDS OVER 425,000 IN GRANTS

At the 5th Annual Meeting of Indian River Impact 100 a record number of members attended the Oak Harbor gathering and selected their four winners, each receiving grants of $100,000. Runner-ups didn't go home empty handed either; they each received a check for $7,250. Winners include:

Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Youth Guidance will
collaborate to provide comprehensive mentor training, staff
development and a Mentor Roundtable facilitation for Indian
River County non-profits that are implementing a mentoring
program. The grant will provide for the hiring of a trainer/
coordinator as well as establishing a resource library.

Camp Haven, the only shelter for homeless adults without dependent children in the county, will provide for newly homeless persons to avoid a rapid spiral into chronic homelessness with case worker support, life skills education and shelter, and meals for county men and women in a supportive living opportunity for those who seek to rise out of homelessness. Their grant also includes a new roof and a small commercial kitchen for their new property, formerly the Citrus Motel.

Senior Resource Association, Inc. will relocate the Adult Day Care Center (the only one in Indian River County) to the Schumann Center. The present facility is inadequate for bathroom and kitchen facilities. Funds will be used to relocate from its retrofitted, cramped 1952 house to the adjacent Schumann Center which will significantly increase the number of seniors served daily from 35 to 69. The vision requires modifications including, remodeled bathrooms, construction of mobile partitions, installation of safety elements and a porte-cochere; addition of a secure outdoor garden, and appropriate health care furniture.

Treasure Coast Community Health, Inc. will provide oral health education and preventative care through the expansion of pediatric services at their Oslo center. The grant calls for converting administrative space to allow for three new dental chairs. This would result in 5,000 new dental visits a year and cut down on their three-month waiting period to be seen. Children six months to four years will receive application of preventative material on their teeth, providing early interventions and guidance.

COME TOUR CASTLE!
FROM ROSE SPYTEK
Reply

Please join me at the CASTLE office in Vero Beach for a glass of wine or a soft drink and a tour of the facility.  CASTLE's only mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect and April is Child Abuse Prevention month.  No one will ask for donations.  This is purely an informational tour.  Although CASTLE has been helping our community for 30 years, many people still do not know what it does. CASTLE is located at 148 Vista Royale Square. I think that you will be moved and impressed by what they do.  I feel strongly that if we can educate, we can prevent.

The date is Tuesday, April 30th from 5:30-7:00.  Please RSVP by replying above or call 643-7805.

I am a senior at Auburn University majoring in Interior Design with a minor in Business. Before graduating in the fall all seniors are required to secure an internship over the summer with a licensed architect or designer. I secured my internship with a firm in Miami back in February. Unfortunately it was just disclosed this week that they do not hold the NCIDQ license required by Auburn. I welcome and would be most appreciative of any leads any FLASHERS can provide. Any compensation would be appreciated but not required. My website and resume can be accessed by clicking here. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
