DR. JOYCE DESROSIERS

  IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Each week I get such joy from bringing attention to individuals in our community who are making a difference. Each unique in their own way...Each living with a passion... Each making selfless contributions to our community.  Some have their hands in 'many pots' and are energetic and impossible NOT to notice. Some are more reserved, working with an unwavering dedication to their cause. This last description fits this week's Positive Person, Dr. Joyce Desrosiers, to a 'T'!

Joyce has two grown children of her own and 3 adult step children who have also contributed much joy to her world. Joyce's son Justin (34) currently serves in the U.S. Army as a part of the Criminal Investigation Command unit in Washington. He was previously deployed to Iraq for 15 months. It was correspondence with her son at war that gave her a mission of her own. Simple yet powerful words... "Mom, if you could see the faces on the men who never receive mail; it's heart breaking." That was all it took. Joyce jumped on board with the local Military Moms Prayer Group  and took on their Holidays for Heroes campaign. Joyce has served as the coordinator for the past seven years and the campaign has grown to the point that 3,000 packages were sent this past holiday season to our men and women in war zones. It has been a journey since she first started with her out of pocket money, her typed signs, and a fervent passion to spread the word and grow the program. Fast forward seven years and Joyce is proof that a Mom's passion and faith can make all things possible!

Joyce encourages others to find one charity and some passion! If everyone did that, imagine the impact! She is motivated by four people here in Vero. One is Pam Proctor whose vision for starting the Military Mom's Prayer Group has opened the door for many moms to reach out to the Lord and each other for support and strength. Another is Linda Colontrelle, who has unimaginable energy for her family, job, and charities. Margy Kulczycki is a friend whose son was deployed at the same time as Justin. Watching her stay strong and her steadfast faith gave Joyce courage and motivation. Most importantly Joyce is motivated by her husband, Rudy. Not only does he provide constant support, it was his encouragement that sent Joyce back to school as an adult to receive her doctorate. Again it was simple words; "Joyce, you will be 44. So, you can be 44 with a doctorate or 44 without a doctorate. It's as simple as that." That was all it took and Joyce took the plunge. She now has the most unique Optometry/Optical showrooms created by her husband. Walking in is like taking a day-trip to the French Quarter in New Orleans.

A fun fact about Joyce?  Her mother is a Conway and Father a Corman...That's right! Think the Carol Burnett Show...Joyce is related to both Tim Conway and Harvey Korman whose name changed through the years from Corman to Korman.

Joyce you are an inspiration on many levels! Thank you for that!

OSCAR AWARDS THIS SUNDAY
FEBRUARY 24th AT 7pm ON ABC
"I'd like to thank the Academy...and my family...and on...and on..and on." It's that time of year again, - the most important night in Hollywood when all the stars come out in their best finery, and even though they may not win, they will smile and applaud those who do and try to act like they really mean it! This year's host will be Seth MacFarlane. Did I hear you ask, "Who's that?" (We didn't know either, so we 'googled' him.) MacFarlane is the multi-talented creator, writer and animator of TV's The Family Guy and is the voice for some of the characters. He was also the creator of the movieTED and did the voice of the bear. Along with being able to speak in several 'voices', he's an accomplished pianist and singer. Previous Academy Awards hosts that inspire him and from whom he'll try to take cue are Billy Crystal, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson. Those are 'pretty tough acts to follow', so we certainly wish him well! For more on the Oscars, Click Here.

Only 7 days left to Join Impact 100
Join us tonight to find out more about IMPACT!

Thinking of joining Impact 100...well tonight, February 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. might be a good time to do just that. That's when CHICO'S and WHITE HOUSE/ BLACK MARKET (Across from Panera) open their doors for an exclusive shopping spree and surprises for Impact 100 members and prospective members. Discounts will be offered and names of women who join will be placed in drawings for gift cards from both stores. A free gift with purchases will be given while supplies last.

Impact 100 is a philanthropic group of women dedicated to positive transformation in Indian River County, Florida. Each April we give out several $100,000 grants to deserving organizations serving various populations within the county. How do we do it? We each donate $1000 a year resulting in collective giving for our community. Being a donor is where the magic happens. The great individual satisfaction that comes from being a part of these massive grants, and having a vote to decide who the winners will be, are part of that magic. Your money takes on your energy and your
personality and gives you a sense of belonging. Download a membership form from our website www.Impact100ir.com or contact our Vice President of Membership, Linda Knoll, indaknoll@gmail.com.
HEALTH TIP
DRINK MORE COFFEE?
The Real Age website claims that drinking coffee can reduce the risk of diabetes BY 50 %. Here's the complete statement:
"We've been saying for years that a filtered cup of Joe has blood vessel-loving, brain-enhancing, headache-defeating powers, and more health benefits. Now we know that drinking four cups of coffee throughout the day reduces your risk for type 2 diabetes by 50%. Turns out it's more than the caffeine that fends off high blood sugar. Other chemicals in coffee stop damage to the building blocks of diabetes-preventing proteins. True, coffee can have side effects: anxiety, migraine headaches, abnormal heartbeat, gastric upset. If you get these, cut back on the Joe so the risks don't outweigh the benefits."

IRS College Tax Credit for Students 2011 2012
ANOTHER TAX TIP
THE LIFETIME LEARNING CREDIT
If you didn't meet the criteria for the American Opportunity Credit that we sent you in last week's tip, you might be eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit. The Lifetime Learning Credit allows a taxpayer to deduct 20% of college tuition and fees, up to $10,000, which can equal a $2,000 tax credit. The credit may be used for the taxpayer, spouse and the dependent children. The Lifetime Learning Credit is phased out for single taxpayers with incomes between $52,000 and $62,000, or $104,000 to $124,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly. Unlike the American Opportunity Tax Credit, this Lifetime Learning Credit does not require the student to be studying toward a degree, enrolled at least half-time, or limit on number of years it may be taken.

WWII aviation buffs won't want to miss History Flight's "Until They're Home" Barnstormer Tour when it lands at Vero Beach Municipal Airport Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 23-24. History Flight operates three of World War II's most important aircraft, all authentically restored to give passengers "thrill of a lifetime" flights that sound and feel as if you've entered a time machine. You can be a member of the up to six passenger 'bomber crew'.

Or, you can take the controls (with a certified pilot aboard) of a two-seat AT-6 Texan Advanced Trainer or open cockpit Stearman Biplane - nick named "The Yellow Peril". Both airplanes are quick and maneuverable, so flights can include aerobatics and combat maneuvers if desired, and are incredibly fun to fly and fly in.

A 501c3 non-profit foundation, History Flight takes these flying museums to regional airports so people can experience the excitement of World War II aviation. There different flight packages available.

Each tax-deductible flight funds ongoing research and search missions that help bring America's missing WWII servicemen home from remote battlefields and crash sites.  To date, History Flight has helped locate the remains of over 200 MIAs from the Pacific Theater as well as Europe.

To reserve a History Flight or get complete details on each flight package visit  www.HistoryFlight.com, or call History Flight toll free at 1-888-743-3311. No flying experience is necessary.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Creamy Peanut Butter Pie
Serves 10 to 12

8 ounces chocolate cookies
4 tablespoons butter, melted
4 ounces finely chopped chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 to 2 bananas
1 cup heavy cream
8 ounces cream cheese
1 cup creamy-style peanut butter
1 cup confectioner's sugar [powder sugar]
1 - 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

Add the cookies to the bowl of a food processor and pulse into fine crumbs. Combine melted butter and cookie crumbs in a small bowl, and stir with a fork to mix well. Press mixture into the bottom and 1-inch up the sides of a 9-inch pie pan.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave. Pour over bottom of cookie crust and spread to the edges. Sprinkle chopped banana slices over the melted chocolate. Place pan in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

Pour the heavy cream into a bowl and beat using a mixer until stiff peaks form. Transfer to a small bowl and store in refrigerator until ready to use. Place the cream cheese and peanut butter in a deep bowl. Beat on medium speed until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low and gradually beat in the confectioner's sugar. Add the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Increase speed to medium and beat until all the ingredients are combined and filling is smooth.

Stir in 1/3 of the whipped cream into the filling mixture (helps lighten the batter, making it easier to fold in the remaining whipped cream). Fold in the remaining whipped cream. Pour the filling into the prepared pie pan. Drizzle the melted chocolate on top, if using, and refrigerate for three hours or overnight before serving.

Education Spotlight: The Indian Bank at VBHS

(as the customer)
Did you know there is a student-run bank at VBHS in partnership with CenterState Bank where student depositors earn 5% interest on their savings accounts? The bank not only allows level 3 accounting students who pass Quickbooks Certification to apply what they have learned, it also encourages students to save. When student bank employees were asked about the value of this program, there were many responses. Some plan to major in accounting in college and appreciate the opportunity to practice what they have learned. Others appreciate the leadership skills learned by operating the bank and many appreciate the incentive to save. One student said that by depositing every other paycheck, she forces herself to save money and

benefit from the 5% interest rate unavailable at commercial banks. The bank also processes payments for school activities such as yearbook sales, prom and homecoming tickets, and some school group fundraising events. The bank has been operating since 2008 under the sponsorship of Ms. Alison Moody, a business teacher who continues to work with and support student efforts to run the Indian Bank. Our schools are doing amazing things!
