HAPPY
NEW
YEAR
FLASHERS!
|

SHED YOUR BAGGAGE IN 2013!
Happy New Year FLASHERS and Happy New Beginnings! Instead of resolving what you will do this year, why not try what you won't do? Here's a list I read of actions and emotions that hold many of us back from accomplishing our goals. Chances are some may hold true for you. So, why not pack those up and leave them in the ashes of 2012!
- Fear - Pride - Regret - Self-destructive Behavior - Envy - Worry - Excuses - Stale Ideas - Resentment - Procrastination - Anger -
Think of 2013 like a brand new notebook. Fill it with ideas, activities and people that make you happy. In this issue and all future issues, I hope you will find things to make 2013 a very special year filled with many wonderful and fun memories! As you know, FLASH always has a an incredibly inclusive calendar of local events. Why not make it a goal to do at least one new activity each month! There is certainly a wonderful list to choose from. Make sure you get a copy of the printed January calendar that will be distributed throughout the weekend to many local businesses. Thanks FLASHERS...Make it a great year!

FLASH BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK Sponsored by:
How Not to Look Old
Fashion-and-style expert the late Charla Krupp is not one to mince words. "Aging sucks," she declares in her bestselling book, How Not to Look Old. We can sometimes find ourselves in a beauty fashion rut that can scream, "old lady" to the world. Try to avoid the following at all cost:
* Wearing an eyeglass chain around your neck? * Covering your face with a mask of foundation? * Wearing Mommy jeans? * Wearing a bra that doesn't boost the girls up halfway between your shoulders and your elbow?
* In dark lipstick? * Wearing too-long hair that's parted down the middle * Have a solid block of hair color * Have gray or white brow hairs * Walking around in half-glasses * Wearing obvious lip liner * Have too-white teeth * Sporting dragon-lady nails
To look younger...Non-surgical procedures are the way to go.
We are so fortunate to be coming of age at a time when we can get Botox, and can get the wrinkles in our forehead and the crow's feet to disappear in a week, 48 hours sometimes. We also have so many FDA-approved fillers right now. One thing that happens as we age is, our faces get thinner and gaunter, and we lose fat. A thin face is an old face, so you want to keep it plump. Then to get rid of sun damage you can try peels or lasers also work incredibly well to even out skin tones. These procedures are much easier and less abusive on your body than undergoing plastic surgery. Lastly, have your eyebrows professionally groomed. It's such an easy fix and can act as an instant facelift.

. ~ FLASH TIP OF THE WEEK ~ When you prepare corn on the cob, pasta, potatoes, or other vegetables, don't pour the hot water down the drain. Instead, remove the food with tongs or a slotted spoon. When the water has cooled dump it directly onto a thirsty plant, or save it in a large container to take out to your garden later. The nutients in the water will serve your plants well! |
TWO SIMILAR IDEAS WE LIKE
CREATE A FAMILY YEARBOOK FOR 2013
Originally, this idea came from Martha Stewart, but her directions were a bit over-the-top for most of us. At FLASH, we don't think it needs to be that complicated and the New Year makes for a good beginning. Basically, you take photos each month depicting your family activitiesn and then put the best ones in a section of the book labeled for that month. You can also include invitations and announcements or other mementos that you received. If you're into scrapbooking, this could be a great project. However, it can be as simple as putting the objects in plastic sleeves in a binder and would only require a little time at the end of each month. This idea is similar...but even easier. Find a jar and start writing good things that happen to you or those you love on little pieces of paper. Such things as: surprise gifts, accomplished goals, beauty in nature, 'lol' moments, memories worth saving, daily blessings, etc. On December 31st open the jar and read all of the amazing things that happened to you in 2013! What fun!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING WITH BOURBON SAUCE
Bread pudding was extremely popular with frugal cooks during the Depression years of the early '30s. This Recipe brings it up a notch with the elegant sauce and makes it suitable for company.
Ingredients
- 4 stale slices firm-textured white bread, crusts and all
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup dark seedless raisins
- 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 1 cup half-and-half
Bourbon Sauce
- 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup bourbon
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon
Directions
1. Butter 1 1/2-quart casserole or spritz with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
2. Spread one side of each slice of bread with butter, cut each slice into four pieces of equal size, spread half of them in casserole, and sprinkle half of raisins on top. Repeat layers and set aside.
3. Beat eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg at high electric mixer speed about 2 minutes until creamy. With mixer at low speed, add milk gradually, then half-and-half.
4. Pour over bread and raisins in casserole and let stand uncovered at room temperature 1 hour. After 40 minutes, preheat oven to 350°F.
5. When pudding has stood 1 hour, set in large shallow pan, and place on pulled-out middle oven shelf. Pour hot water into pan to depth of 1 inch, slide shelf into oven, and bake pudding uncovered about 1 hour until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
6. Transfer casserole to wire rack and cool 20 minutes.
7. Meanwhile, prepare Bourbon Sauce: Combine sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, and salt in small nonreactive saucepan. Whisk in water and bourbon and continue whisking until smooth. Add butter, set over moderate heat, and cook, whisking constantly, 2 to 3 minutes until thickened and translucent. Remove from heat, mix in lemon juice, and transfer to heated sauceboat.
8. Serve pudding warm at table
