                  ~ Hello FLASHERS~
Wow! A little less than two weeks 'til Christmas and then another week until we usher in 2013. Time is certainly ticking on. I do love this time of year; even with the craziness that seems to be synonymous with the season!  It's the time for family, friends, traditions and giving. Those are the things that have always meant the most to me and I love it when it is the focus!

This past week I was back in Georgia for one of my favorite events of the year, The Mercer University Press ~ Authors' Day Luncheon. Being a literary event, I heard quite a few messages on the power of words. That inspired my 'Editor's Note' this week. There is little, if anything, in life that is as powerful as 'words'. Words have the ability to cheer, heal, inspire, help, motivate, encourage, and unite ....contrary, they also have the ability to hurt, divide, poison, and shut down. Undoubtedly we have all used words on both ends of the spectrum. The good news is we can always use words to mend those damaged relationships. I know of no better time than this magical season to engage in that mending. Lastly, with less than two weeks left to capture the 'perfect' gift I suggest the gift of words. Why not take the time to write a letter to a few of the special people in your life. Letting someone know how much they mean to you and how they have personally impacted you might very likely ascend and snatch the title of the year's favorite gift! What a gift with a profound impact potential...and it doesn't cost a thing! Give it a try! I have decided to do just that. I will create a new family tradition of writing a personal letter to each of my three children this year.

Enjoy this issue of FLASH. I do greatly appreciate your loyalty and sincerely thank you for spending time with us each Thursday. You will see a couple of feature posts that ask for some action on your part.  Please consider obliging us!  I would be most appreciative!

Thank You!

12 Days and Counting....Tips For The Season!

jinglejinglejinglejinglejingle

  1. Be yourself!  Everyone else is taken.... Oscar Wilde
  2. Manage your holiday expectations! - Remember, the reality is that the holidays are like any other day of the year and Like those days they will be filled with ups and downs. We have a tendency to expect the perfect 'Norman Rockwell' picture. This is one of those rare situations where lowering your standards and expectations can result in greater and more rewarding returns! Relax and enjoy!
  3. Be mindful of what you are saying 'no' to when you say 'yes'!
  4. Take time to drive around or walk around the neighborhood to enjoy the Christmas lights. If driving...put in the Christmas CD  and enjoy a family sing-along. Invite an elderly person to join you!
  5. Practice Mindful Eating. Look at the post in this issue and make wise choices.
  6. Take the time to start a family tradition - We hope to feature several traditions of our FLASH subscribers  in next week's issue. (Remember...it's never too late to start a tradition!)
  7. Send a card or make a phone call to someone that you have not spoken to in a while, but who has impacted your life! Letting someone know what they mean to you is the best gift of all!
  8. Don't regress at family gatherings. You are no longer 8 and your sibling 12. Let bygones be bygones and decide to begin a new this year! :)
  9. Put two things on your list of things to read with the family. One, The Night Before Christmas and the second, The story of the birth of Jesus!!
  10. Take the time to volunteer and/or purchase a gift for someone less fortunate. We have many local charities who would welcome your support and there is no doubt that you will feel less stressed and much 'merrier' after giving your time! It will be well worth it!
  11. Make an appointment to spend time with your spouse and/or family. Get it on the calendar now and don't let anything get in the way of that special time together.
  12. Never lose focus of the true meaning of Christmas. Keeping our mind on that, we will all end up feeling truly blessed and never disappointed!

                THIS WEEK'S INTERESTING FLASH FACT
How did the department store Santa tradition begin?
In 1841, J.W. Parkinson, a Philadelphia merchant, hired a man to dress up in a "Kris Kringle" outfit and climb the chimney of his store.  It took forty years for another store to catch on and expand the idea. The Boston Store in Brockton, Massachusetts, became the father of department Santas when it hired Edgar, a tall Scottish immigrant, who was roly-poly, with a white beard, a warm voice and a hearty laugh, to be Santa Claus...and so it began! :)

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Cheesecake Dip Recipe

Cheesecake Dip Recipe

When you're in the mood for something sweet, but you want to keep it light, this simple dip really hits the spot. Dipping fresh plump strawberries in the cool and creamy concoction is a fun and delicious way to eat dessert. Perfect for the holidays! ENJOY!

NOTE: You can lighten the calories by using low or no-fat cream cheese and sour cream.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup  sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries
  • 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

Directions

  • In a bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add the sour cream, sugar, milk and extract; mix until smooth. Transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Place the strawberries and crumbs in separate serving bowls. Dip strawberries into cheesecake mixture, then into crumbs. Yield: about 1 cup.

Also try this dip with chocolate cookies, small brownies or vanilla wafers. Yum!

EDIBLE GIFTS FOR THE ONE WHO HAS IT ALL
Below are some of my favorite gifts for the holidays! I always stock up at Welch's on my way back to Florida this time of year. I buy jerky for the men on my list! It is delicious and they have unique varieties that include elk, buffalo, and alligator! What could be better for the men who are so difficult to buy for? Then there is Bruno Chocolates in our own backyard in Fort Pierce.  Bruno has been around for years and has filled our stockings for just about as long. These delicious chocolates also make fantastic corporate and personal gifts. Finally....the gift of citrus. Our friends in Georgia get bushels every year and there is just no comparison to what is available in the stores north of our Florida wonderland!  Ace High is owned and operated by lifelong friends of ours and they would love to help make your northern friends' Christmas a bit sweeter!
