THIS SUNDAY IS VETERANS' DAY!
Veterans Day... Two simple words that carry a message and meaning that is nearly impossible to capture in words. The old adage, 'A picture is worth a thousand words' is so true and this week I have a video that will hopefully move each and every FLASHER! PLEASE take the 2:41 to watch it. It will warm your spirit and hopefully motivate you to do what you can to make a difference. The human spirit is an incredible thing that truly knows no bounds and the impact that each one of us can have on another is an amazing thing. My message and video this week is meant to encourage character, strength, courage and initiative in all of us.
Please seek out a Veteran and thank him or her! Simply taking the time to drop off a pie or home-baked cookies, with a simple thank you note, to a veteran from ANY war would be so greatly appreciated...I have no doubt! If you don't personally know a veteran you can drop cookies at the Elks Lodge this morning. (see post below) It also seems the perfect opportunity to encourage our FLASHERS to stop by a distribution location to pick up a care package provided by the Military Moms Prayer Group. Each box has a label for a specific 'hero' in a war zone or at sea, along with a list of suggested items you can purchase to fill your box. This is a great thing to do with your children, youth group, students, or service organization. I took my Youth Guidance 'mentee' with me yesterday to pick out the special items for our packages! She loved participating and included a special hand written note with the decorative touches that only an eight-year-old girl can contribute! Add your own special touch and be the difference you hope to see in the world! THANK YOU FLASHERS!

CINDY HEJLIK IS A POSITIVE PERSON
This week FLASH is honored to feature Cindy Hejlik as our Community Positive Person. Anyone who knows Cindy cannot deny the positive energy that she emits. It's impossible to feel depressed or even a little 'gloomy' when you are in her presence! Shortly after moving to the area Cindy started volunteering at Harvest Food & Outreach. It wasn't long before she was offered the position as Volunteer Services Coordinator. She worked her magic, making each person part of her extended family. Cindy knew the need that each one had to not only be listened to, but to be cared about! In Cindy they found someone they could trust. Someone who believed in them and in their dreams. A year and a half later Cindy was promoted to Community Relations Coordinator. She can be seen at numerous networking events promoting the mission of Harvest Food & Outreach which is to provide a hand up to those in need, helping them to break free from poverty through the proactive, educational and life-skills training program they provide.
.
Upon moving to Florida Cindy quickly found herself in a different situation without her family close by. She is the mother to 5 children and proud grandmother of three. All of her children are professional adults with morals, respect, and dignity. They are her proudest accomplishment and without them around Cindy quickly figured out that she needed to find a new outlet for the passion and energy she had spent years devoting to them. Her new home and community became that outlet. She believes strongly in promoting others and helping them make their business and/or mission successful. Live by example and show others that you care and you turn out the winner! "God put us on this earth to live by his example. I strive to do that each and every day that I am on this earth."
.
Cindy is not one to toot her own horn and this public accolade is somewhat uncomfortable. However, that being said...let me toot some more. Cindy is a member of Crossing Church where she serves on the Cross Point Leadership team. She is a member of both the Indian River and Sebastian River Chamber of Commerce, is the Co-Chair to the IR Chamber Leads Group and serves as an Ambassador for both Chambers. She co-organized Martini Networking with Veronica Kolibab and is an honorary member of FIASCO Brothers Motorcycle Club. Yes, Cindy loves riding on the back of a Harley. She also loves the ocean, shopping, dancing, and having lived on a farm for over 40 years...She LOVES animals! Cindy, your community loves you and appreciates your positive energy and commitment! THANK YOU and keep up the great work!

Executive Functioning:
What Does That Mean and Why Do I Care?
By: Karen Mersky, Ph.D
"Please empty the dishwasher." From a parent's perspective, that does seem like a rather simple request. Doesn't your child just need to know where the dishwasher is and that emptying it means taking out what's inside and putting those items in their appropriate locations? Why is it then that one child might take out the plates, but soon be found playing video games? Is that child just lazy or being uncooperative? Maybe he or she is, but maybe not. Perhaps an apple was seen on the counter, which reminded him that he was hungry, so he started to eat it. On the way to get a napkin, a nearby computer was noticed, and this led to playing video games, leaving the dishwasher only half empty. Does this kind of situation sound familiar? Does your child have similar difficulty completing school assignments?

CHUCKLE OF THE WEEK
A guy decided to bring his new blonde girlfriend to a football game. After the game is over, he asks her if she liked the game.
She replied: "Oh it was great, but there is one thing I don't understand."
"What didn't you understand, honey ?"
"Well, at the beginning of the game, they flipped a quarter to see who would kick off first. Then the rest of the game everybody was yelling get the quarter back, get the quarter back, get the quarter back! Why? It was only a quarter!"

BEAUTY TIP OF THE WEEK
BB CREAMS...WHAT ARE THEY?

BB Creams - they are the latest buzz, but what are they? BB creams have been the go to secret of women in Korea and other Asian countries for years. They love the flawless and luminous coverage BB creams provide. BB is short for "Blemish Balm" or "Beauty Balm". The creams provide coverage that last all day and into the evening. This amazing all-in-one product touts being able to: moisturize, nourish the skin, cover and treat dark spots, cover and calm acne, includes SPF, contains anti-aging serum, provides anti-inflammatory serums, and gives an instant radiant glow. That is a lot to promise. Do they deliver? Well, the good ones do! A good mineral based BB Cream with SPF and quality, non-comedogenic ingredients is definitely worth a try. Some things to know before you try; a little goes a long way. Only use a pea-size amount and work in a patting motion with your fingertips. If you have oily skin or prefer a matte finish, this may not be the product for you as it does give you a nice, dewy glow. BB Creams come in fewer shades than traditional foundations so it is best to work with an esthetician or make-up artist to find the perfect color match for you.

HOLIDAY FASHION TREND Katy Perry (pictured here at an earlier event this year) combines two of this winter's favorite fashion trends....the color Red with Velvet. Red is extremely popular on the runways for winter and Velvet is one of the favorite fabrics being used by designers in dresses, skirts, pants, capes and even casual wear. Velvet is a perfect weight for our Florida winters and when combined with the color red, it's a great look for the upcoming holidays. |

FORGET SOMETHING? IT'S NOT YOU, - IT'S THE DOOR! We've all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do...or get. ..or find. New research from the University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor, Gabriel Radvansky, found that it's not your fault! The research found that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses. "Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an 'event boundary' in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away," Radvansky explains. "Recalling the decision that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized." Now, don't you feel better? |
A new study out of Stanford University shows that our touchscreen cell phones are some of the dirtiest, filthiest, bacteria-harboring vessels out there.
According to Dr. Jeffrey Cain, President of the American Academy of Family Physicians, "People are just as likely to get sick from their phones as from handles in the bathroom." How do the the germs get there? We take our phones everywhere: The gym, restaurants, bars - and many of us, whether we admit it or not, even tap at a phone while sitting on the toilet. Simply put: Our phone hygiene just isn't very good. How do you cut down on contamination? Alcohol, was shown to be the most effective substance for removing germs from the back and side areas of your phone. But you might not want to use it on your smartphone's screen. (Apple says not to use "window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives" on your iPhone. BlackBerry has similar advice.) There is, of course, another way to cut down on the nasty junk living on your phone's surface: Wash your hands regularly and aggressively!
