IT'S NOVEMBER!
TIME TO TURN THE CLOCK BACK AND
GET OUT AND VOTE!
Get ready for a busy month, Flashers. There are a lot of special dates to remember in the next few weeks. First, if you're as tired as I am of waking up in the dark, you'll be glad to know that Daylight Savings ends at 2:00 A.M. this Sunday, Nov. 4th...and we gain an hour in our day! I just love that! Be sure to turn your clocks back before you go to bed Saturday night. And if you're as tired as I am of all the political commercials, remember that they will end on Election Day next Tuesday, Nov. 6th. Be sure to vote. On Friday, Nov. 9th of the following week there will be no school for students in public schools (private schools might vary) due to teachers' conferences. Then, since Veterans Day (Nov. 11th) falls on a Sunday, it will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 12th. The Post Office and other government offices and banks will be closed, but public schools will be open. However, beginning Saturday, Nov. 17th students and teachers will begin the long Thanksgiving break that lasts until Monday, Nov. 26th. Then schedules will become even more hectic as we begin to usher in the holiday season. Many exciting days are ahead. So rest up and take full advantage of that extra hour you gain next week!
Please note below that we are bringing back our Positive Person feature! Seems quite fitting to do so this month when we are all reminded to stop...and say thank you for the wonderful things in our lives. I personally love the heart of a volunteer and truly enjoy giving many of them a public thank you and pat on the back in FLASH. Please feel free to nominate a Positive Person. You can do so by clicking here.

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS?
Snow might not be around,
but Vero Dental Spa can help make your teeth glisten and sparkle!
Vero Dental Spa offered In-Office Bleaching this past summer to re-introduce Dr. Harold Brooks to Vero Beach, and the response was very positive all the way around! They loved welcoming FLASHERS to their office (a colorful, tropically-themed office, we might add!), and they want to meet even more FLASHERS this fall!
The timing couldn't be more perfect as you head into the holiday season. Scratch a whiter smile off your to-do list! Go into the holiday season looking your best and with a smile on your face.
The In-Office Bleaching session is step one of a two-step process, which includes a take-home bleaching product so you can continue the whitening process at home. Yellowing teeth didn't happen overnight, so they won't go away overnight, but this program will jump-start the process! This treatment works far better than the over-the-counter products and is quick, easy and safe.
IMPORTANT NOTE! For maximum results, teeth should be clean and free of tartar build up. It is recommended that bleachings be done within six months of having a regular dental cleaning. If you have not had a cleaning within the last six months you can select the option with the cleaning and you will receive both the whitening and the cleaning at a 50% discount.
Fine print:
* Voucher expires December 31, 2012
* Buying a gift certificate for a Christmas present? We're happy to extend the expiration date for you! Just call us after you make your purchase and we'll note in our records that your purchase is for another individual, who will call after the holidays. We're happy to extend their expiration date to February 15, 2013!

November is EPILEPSY Awareness Month !SAVE THE DATE! Let's Talk About It Dinner November 3rd 5-8PM @ Vero Beach Elk's Lodge |
POSITIVE PERSON BARBARA FALLON I am thrilled to bring back our Positive Person feature and even more so to spotlight Barbara Fallon this week. I recently had coffee with Barbara and was warmed by her giving spirit, inspired by her will to stay on the learning curve of technology, and motivated by her varied interests. This is clearly a lady with a love for life, for those around her, and for her cats. She is the daughter of Alma Lee Loy and has lived in Vero for 40 years and has been volunteering here for 18 years.
She was a volunteer with the IRC Ambulance Squad for 8 years and actually saved two lives for which she was written up in the paper. She has devoted time to the Hibiscus Club and Garden Club and is currently serving on the Advisory Committee for the Veteran's Memorial Island Sanctuary. She is a Veteran of the Vietnam war and went to a Veteran's luncheon hosted by the GFWC Treasure Coast Women's organization several years ago. It didn't take her long to get involved and she is the current President-Elect and was recognized as 'Member of the Year' last year (2011) and nominated by the District for the 'Volunteer of the Year' recognition.
When Barbara isn't volunteering, she enjoys: gardening, sketching, music, photography, fundraising and computers. It is Barb's belief that the more one gives, the more one receives in blessings. The volunteer is the true winner! "Seeing the faces of recipients of giving just a little of your time or presenting a check to a charity or person(s) in need is priceless. You can't explain it!" She encourages everyone to give when and where they can and to start giving back as early as they can ... and never stop!
Barbara, on behalf of our community I thank you for all of the countless hours you have generously donated to make our world a better place. As Veterans Day approaches let me say a sincere and heartfelt thank you for your service to our country! A mere thank you seems so inadequate. You are quite deserving of the title "Positive Person" and we thank you and appreciate you!

Keep the Glow, Lose the Wrinkles
(Change in FDA's SunScreen labeling)
Beauty Tip of the Week Brought to you by Center for Facial Aesthetics
.
Just because you don't feel the heat of the mid-summer, Florida sun doesn't mean your skin isn't affected by harmful ultraviolet rays. There are two types of UV rays we need to guard against all year long. UVB -think burning / UVA - think aging. When the label on the sunscreen bottle says it has an SPF of 15, this means that 93% of Ultraviolet B rays are filtered out. SPF 30 filters out 97% of UVB rays. This means if a person's unprotected skin reddens in 4 minutes, the use of an SPF 30 increases that protection and reddening time to 120 minutes. UVA rays penetrate deeper layers of the skin causing genetic and cellular changes that lead to aging and can lead to cancer. Today's new FDA regulated labels ensure that when the words broad spectrum are used, the product has been tested and proven to work against UVA rays. UVA protection works in tandem with SPF coverage.
Real Aging Protection comes only when we use "Broad Spectrum" sunscreen - The FDA no longer allows the claim of "sun block" because there is no total blocker. It is never too late to start wearing sunscreen. Sun damage has nothing to do with age. It has to do with sun exposure. If you go out into the sun and you aren't wearing sunscreen, your skin will be damaged. If you start wearing sunscreen now, you'll decrease further damage to your skin. Also, since it's protected, your skin will begin the process of repairing itself, and reversing some of the damage the sun has already caused. Broad spectrum sunscreens contain SPF of 15 or higher and filter UVA rays, the aging rays. Everyone should wear sunscreen, no matter age or ethnicity all year round. Using sunscreen is a guaranteed, simple step that will improve the health and appearance of your skin.

Whether you will be celebrating or commiserating election night, it's always nice to gather with friends to watch the election returns and minute-by-minute forecasts. With polls still showing a tight race, the anticipation will likely last long into the night. So, keep guests fueled up with some delicious dishes and snacks, and maybe a pot of coffee to keep them awake! Chili kept warm in a crock pot is an easy solution. Serve it with grated cheese and chopped onions with crackers and rolls, or make a pan of cornbread from an easy mix. Whether you're "left wing" or "right wing," you can let your guests know by serving chicken wings on appropriate colored paper plates to match the red states (Rep.) or blue states (Dem.). You can pick them up from any number of our local spots or check out our recipe below. Crunchy veggies and a ranch dressing dip adds a healthy touch to your menu, and a platter of cookies and brownies will satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. Now how easy is that?!

BRUSH UP ON YOUR CIVIC KNOWLEDGE!
As we all now know we have a very important election coming up next Tuesday, November 6. For federal offices, President, Vice President and U.S. Congress, election day occurs only in even numbered years. Presidential elections occur every four years and are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Senators, two from each state, serve six-year staggered terms and all Representatives serve two-year terms. Terms begin in January the following year and the inauguration for President and Vice President is usually held on January 20. Now you know! What you just reviewed won't help with this civic quiz. But see how you do anyway! Click Here (There are 33 questions)

Psychoeducational Evaluations
How Can They Help My Child's Academic Success?
By: Karen Mersky, Ph.D
Your child spends most of his or her waking hours at school and then spends more time at home completing homework, so it's really important that your child's instructional program be appropriate to how your child learns. Does your child get frustrated with or avoid schoolwork, produce inconsistent work, or appear to work harder than what is reflected in the grades received? Does your child say "I'm stupid", make the same mistakes over and over, or have difficulty memorizing information? Does your child have difficulty staying organized or appear easily distracted? We are all better at some things than others and so momentary frustration or some experienced difficulty at school is not necessarily cause for concern. Indeed, some frustration can be a good thing; it not only teaches us how to deal with adversity and develop a sense of tenacity, but learning from mistakes can be an effective tool. However, for some students this frustration and/or academic difficulty, with either a particular subject or with schoolwork in general, becomes a frequent occurrence. It is in these situations that more information about how a student learns can be very beneficial.
For more information about psychoeducational evaluations or about the learning process, contact Karen Mersky, Ph.D., licensed psychologist, at (772) 453-2747

N.Y.C. AFTER SANDY This photo was posted on the Twitter by photographer Kurt Dietrich this past Tuesday morning when a rainbow touched down in lower Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy. There is a faint reflection of a double rainbow on the right. The effect is so perfect that people are questioning whether it's real. We don't know, but we hope so! |

INTERESTING FACT!
My sister has a lamp she had inherited that had quit working. She was ready to get it repaired when our Mom read a tip from Antique experts Kim and Terry Kovel. It seems that some older lamps will not work with the new energy saving bulbs. She changed it to a traditional bulb and now it's working just fine!

COMEDY ZONE @ RIVERSIDE THEATRE
This Weekend
November 2nd & 3rd
SHOWTIMES AT 7:30 and 9:30
$18 EACH
 PAUL STRIKLAND
Cranky every second but loving every minute of it, Paul is generally unimpressed with the world around him, but knows that if you look at anything long enough, you can find something to appreciate in it. Paul has been accused of being "seriously funny" but his work is best described as "funny seriously." He is the lovable grumbler in everyone's life, but he's rather good at it, which is why they charge admission. He is not the "funny guy at the office." He is the guy who makes fun of the "funny guy at the office" because that guy gave himself that title and everybody knows it.
PHIL HOGAN Originally from North Carolina, Phil has been in the entertainment business for almost thirty years, spending his early days as a touring musician. In 1990 Phil first took to the stage as a professional comedian drawing on his years of experience in front of an audience. Now a veteran performer, Phil can read an audience like no one else, sensing their mood and giving them what they want. His show is a Southern flavored blend of stand-up, original comedy songs, guitar goofiness, and musical impressions. Phil is not your typical guitar act... he can actually play the guitar...no endless string of parodies here. Whether you look for a clean show or something with a little more edge, Phil will make you laugh.

VITAMIN D AND MEMORY LOSS
We have known that Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is necessary for bone health and that it also helps the immune system, but now we are learning that it's also important for brain function. According to Harvard University, surveys indicate that a shocking one-third of Americans are deficient in vitamin D! The three main sources for the vitamin are sunlight, oily fish and fortified foods. In a large study conducted by the Peninsula Medical School, the University of Cambridge and the University of Michigan, researchers found that lower Vitamin D levels were strongly correlated with cognitive impairment in the elderly. People with the lowest levels of vitamin D were more than twice as likely to have some degree of cognitive impairment, which includes diseases such as Alzheimer's. If you think you or someone in your family might have a Vitamin D deficiency, or if memory loss is becoming a problem, your doctor can test you for deficiency levels and may recommend supplements. |
