HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Only six days until Halloween! It's one of my favorite holidays and I always have to remind myself that I'm too old to go 'Trick or Treating'! Judging from all of the home decorations that I've seen, there must be a lot of people out there who enjoy it as much as I do. My all time favorite Halloween trick that I like to play on the little goblins who come to my door is to put a sheet of bubble wrap under the doormat. Try it. You will love the response it gets! This issue has other fun Halloween ideas for you and we've even included some special Halloween jokes that your kids will love. As you will see in the posts below, there are also several special events going on in our area this week, so you're bound to find something you'll enjoy. The "Season" is definitely here!

Is Your Child Learning Appropriately?
By: Karen Mersky, Ph.D
As I've stated in a previous FLASH message, learning is a process, and a complex one at that. So it's only reasonable to assume that students learn differently, with each having their own strengths as well as their own challenges. As you talk with your child's teacher, you will learn whether or not your child is meeting those benchmarks set within the curriculum, and whether they're being met easily or with difficulty. As you evaluate your child's progress within the curriculum, it's important to recognize that students learn at different paces, and that these paces are not always steady ones. A slow start can be followed by the student "catching on", which leads to rapid growth in the development of a skill, as reflected in the phrase it's as if a light bulb came on. But what if you're not hearing anything from the teacher? Are there other indications that learning is not going smoothly?

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIP Here's a terrific idea that was new to FLASH. Decorate your children's costumes and Trick or Treat bags with 3M's reflective tape. They'll love 'glowing in the dark' and it will make them more visible to motorists. The tape should be available in white or colors wherever 3M products are sold, but you may want to call first. |

 TATTOO WARNING!
With Halloween approaching, you may have a teenager or a friend who is thinking of getting a 'spooky' tattoo just for fun. Tell them that according to the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), they may not be as safe as they think. The FDA is particularly concerned about a family of bacteria called nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) that has been found in a recent outbreak of illnesses linked to contaminated tattoo inks. This NTM species can cause lung disease, joint infection, eye problems and other organ infections. These infections can be difficult to diagnose and can require treatment lasting six months or more. SHOULD YOU REMODEL YOUR KITCHEN?
According to REMODELING MAGAZINE, replacing the counter top, sink, faucets, wall oven and cook-top can cost an average $20,000, - but.1 % of the project's cost could be recovered by your home's increase in value when you get ready to sell! New counter tops
alone can update your kitchen and add value to your home. Granite is an extremely popu-
lar material being used in kitchen counter tops due to its durability. Because it is a natural stone, granite is quarried from all over the world. The cost of granite counter tops will vary depending on several factors,-such as the type of granite used, but on average the cost of granite counter tops ranges anywhere from $50 to $100 per square foot. Other counter top surfaces that can give your kitchen an updated look, but are less expensive than granite, include tile and Corian, a stain resistant solid surface product developed by Dupont. Only you can decide whether remodeling is worth it. If you are considering remodeling your kitchen, I found a website that can give you many, many ideas and that may help you to decide. RECIPE OF THE WEEK
CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT BUTTER BROWNIE PUMPKINS
We don't have any idea how many calories are in this delicious concoction and we really don't want to know! Imagine this yummy icing spread on top of a pan of brownies. Yum! You might even want to bake the brownies in a round pan and add a little red and yellow food coloring to create orange frosting for an edible jack-o-lantern cake. You can also use a cookie cutter to make individual brownies as pictured. Decorate with fudge icing or chocolate chips and candy corn to create the pumpkin face.
PEANUT BUTTER FROSTING
(Makes enough for two 8"x8" square pans)
- 2 cups creamy peanut butter
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
