The Meaning of Membership

By Rev. Dr. Chris Neufeld-Erdman, Pastor

upc.logo There comes a time in every relationship when we feel compelled to take a step toward deeper commitment.  This is true in the stages of a loving relationship shared between two persons; it's true, as well, in our relationship with God and to God's people, the church.

This May our congregation will receive another wonderful group of people who have taken a step of deepening commitment to God, the gospel, and the church; they are becoming members of UPC.

Joining a church is one of the visible ways we express our desire to unite ourselves with a community of faith that can help us grow in faith and live that faith out in our ordinary lives.

At University Presbyterian Church, membership is not like what you do when you become a member of say, Costco or CVS, the NRA or MoveOn.org.  With organizations like these, you can, of course, be very committed to their cause, but you don't have to be.

But in God's church, membership isn't so much about commitment to a cause.  Nor is membership about access to benefits only available to a limited just to insiders.  Instead, membership is about being membered into a community which is membered to the Father through the Son in the Spirit.  We are members of one another, and members of the Trinity's life in the world.  We are part of a body--big, diverse, eternal, and its benefits are for everybody.  We are committed in the deepest ways to all of God and all that God loves.

Years ago I wrote a little in-house booklet for those who join UPC.  It's called Companions on the Way of Christ: a Handbook for Those Who Walk the Path of Deepening Commitment.  In that booklet I write something all of us, not just new members, ought to know about membership:

So, you have made a deeper commitment to the life of faith.  That commitment comes with a community, and the community is affected by your commitment.  You have received a tremendous blessing and taken on covenant responsibility.  God and God's church are counting on you.  Your brothers and sisters are gifts of grace to you.  They will give you great joy.  They will also disappoint you, frustrate you, and madden you.  This too is part of God's grace and God's way of growing you in holiness, virtue, and a sense of your discipleship.  They will affect you.  And you will affect them.  You will make this community either better or worse.  This community will make you either better or worse.  God has made us one in the bond of unity.  What will you do and be?  How will you affect the community?  What will you bring?

God has made us one; we are intrinsically committed to each other.  What will you do and be because you're part of this church, and more, because you're part of God universal body, the Church?  How will you affect this community?  How does your life affect the world?  What do you bring?  How are you making the world a better place?  These are the true questions of membership.

At UPC, we're not so much interested in the church as an organization or an institution.  It must be those things, but it must always be more.  It's that more that interests us--more about relationships; more about spirit; more about doing something real and meaningful in the world; more about pulling the world into alignment with God; more about love and joy and hope and service; more about asking God-sized questions that lead us toward more openness to God and what God is up to in the world.

All of this means that we don't need new members to help us be a better organization or institution, or to keep ourselves in "business."  We need every one of us to help us grow into the more God desires for us.

Our new members will officially join UPC when they meet with the elders on Tuesday, May 14.  And then we'll all have a chance to celebrate with them at the all church potluck on Sunday evening, May 19 (more about that elsewhere in this newsletter).

I hope you'll welcome them all to the adventure of faith we're all a part of.  And I hope their joining will reinvigorate your own sense of commitment to God, the gospel, and our congregation's mission and ministry in the local area and around the world.

There's so much more God has for us and all creation.  Let us continue to grow into it.

Session Listens to All Members

A Message from Your UPC Session

Hello! Is anybody home? Often phone calls are answered with a recording, "We are not available to take your call, please leave a message." How frustrating is that? The caller had something important to say, but no one was there to listen. At UPC your session is here for you and they are listening.

This past year some of the session members and worship leaders hatched the idea of "being better together" by combining the two Sunday morning worship services into one service for five months during summer rather than the usual three months. This idea touched off quite a controversy with as many valid reasons voiced against the extension as there were for it. A consensus was not reached, and once again, as so often happens with new ideas, an impasse ensued.

Session recognizes that unfortunately, minority opinion often rules when trying to reach agreement. Some people tend to be more assertive in making their wills known than others. And while making a strong point strongly is well and good, it can overshadow those of a different mind - especially those who have just as strong a point of view but without the ability or a forum to voice it. Sharing the "Peace of Christ" does not mean stuffing your needs in favor of another's. Peace at any cost is not peace but appeasement. It only adds to frustration and changes nothing. Peace often comes at a price, but why should one side pay the entire price?

As Christians we strive for unity of spirit, yet more and more these days we find our church family polarizing over worship style and content. Granted, we all have our personal preferences, but when we begin masquerading our wants as needs then it's time to stop and count the cost to unity of the body, for it may be more than we are willing to pay. So let us respectfully consider each others needs on both sides of the issue, knowing that this cannot happen if we are unwilling to listen to each other.

There is something satisfying and healing about honest conversation. UPC Session wants to hear from you; how you experience worship; what forms of worship you prefer and how it nourishes you. Is it possible to unify our congregation in worship more often; or are our needs so divergent that combining services for more than the traditional summer months going to leave many of us spiritually unsatisfied or frustrated?

Your session is providing you an opportunity to meet with them and fellow church members this summer to address and share your worship needs through informal conversations. Session plans to meet in small group discussions after the combined 9:30 worship service. Meeting dates will be announced. Later in the summer Session plans to bring the small groups together in a single forum to consider all the needs voiced in the small group discussions. This is not a time to argue position, but a time to listen to each other.

Session believes consensus is possible. They just don't know what that is. Your help is needed to find the consensus -- hopefully everyone will join session members, other worship leaders, and fellow church members in these important conversations hosted by your Session.

UPC Session listens, hears, and considers the voice of all members.

Worship and Music Events

On Sunday, May 5, in the 8:30 a.m. service, the choir sings a swingin' gospel called "Can't Keep-a That Glory In!"  Blessings abound at the 11 a.m. worship service as the celebration of Easter continues.

On Sunday, May 12, Mother's Day, participants from the congregation join with the Back Row Ensemble in singing a special song to honor all the mothers during the 8:30 a.m. worship service. Worshiping the Divine in a contemplative and intimate way continues at the 11 a.m. service.

On Sunday, May 19, Pentecost Sunday, come and be ready for a joyful, spirit-filled service! The choir accompanied by piano and string bass, sings a gospel called, "Let Everything that Hath Breath", at both worship services, 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

On Sunday, May 26, Trinity Sunday, at the 8:30 a.m. worship service the Choir, joined by the UPC Bell Choir, sings a special anthem called "Hymn to the Trinity." Be blessed at 11 a.m. and enjoy a special worship service focused on the Holy Trinity.

The Pentecost Offering: "Make a Difference - Your Choice; Their Lives."

Each year on Pentecost Sunday (May 19 this year), we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit as a bringer of new life. With the Spirit's coming, we no longer need to settle for business as usual but can know the transforming, redeeming love of God that makes the impossible possible.

The Pentecost Offering is one of the four Special Offerings of the PC (USA). Gifts to the Pentecost Offering help bring God's transforming, redeeming love to children at risk; guide, and nurture young people's growing faith; and provide opportunities for young adults to become spiritual leaders-all in the name of Jesus Christ.

The benefits are all around us. Presbyterian congregations are finding new ways to minister to children at risk in their own communities. General Assembly programs are advocating for children and developing youth and your adult leaders. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised more than $10 million for ministries that benefit younger members of God's family.

Session Summary

By Cindy Correia, Clerk of Session

The UPC Session met on Tuesday, April 9.  Here's a brief summary of the meeting and the actions that were taken:

Each ministry area will review their responsibilities as listed in the current UPC Policies and Procedures, to determine if changes need to be made, based on their current duties. These potential changes will be discussed at the January 2014 Session Retreat.

The Session approved that a car wash be held on an undetermined date, to help the neighborhood children going to Calvin Crest this summer earn money to use at the camp store. The car wash is staffed with the children under adult supervision.  The Session also approved a baptism scheduled on Sunday, May 26.

The Session reviewed the 2013 Lenten/Easter activities, and came up with potential ideas for 2014.

The Session also reviewed discussions and recommendations from the New Era Evaluation and Development Team regarding the Associate Pastor
Replacement position. The Session, in turn, made recommendations for revision of The Associate Pastor job description developed by the NEED Team, and the document is being revised and edited by the NEED Team to reflect the Session's recommendations. The NEED Team is also revising the job description for Senior Pastor so that it is aligned with the job description for Associate Pastor.

Along with the job descriptions, The NEED Team is developing the Church Information Form (CIF), for the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee to complete.  The UPC Nominating Committee is beginning their search for the seven members needed for the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee.  The Congregation will vote on the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee sometime in June.

Children's Ministry: Family Outreach to Valley Animal Center

Do you love animals? Are you dying to pet cats and dogs, but your parents, spouse or possessive pet won't allow you to adopt one more animal?  Then come with Children's Ministry to visit the Valley Animal Center on May 18, 10 a.m. - noon.  Parents and children plan to bring donations of items the center needs most and to spend time petting and visiting with the adorable cats and dogs. Afterwards, it's back to the church for lunch together.  Fun and service all in one!

Youth Ministry

The youth would like to extend an open invitation to the congregation to sign-up for the Calvin Crest Memorial Weekend Service Party, May 24-27.  This is an intergenerational opportunity for individuals or whole families to work alongside and develop relationships with people older and younger as companions on the Way of Christ.  We will be working on a number of projects to help prepare the grounds for summer, and will have plenty of time to laugh and play together.  The cost is $50, which covers meals and lodging will be provided by Calvin Crest.  Don't miss this opportunity to give back to a ministry that has given us many wonderful gifts over the years! For more information, or to sign-up, call or email Dustin.

A Voice from Youth Ministry

by Hannah E

Over spring break, our youth group, led by Sir Dustin Maddox, embarked on a mission trip that involved staying in Fresno working on inner-city projects and becoming more aware of the city's food insecurities. Throughout the trip, we worked with two other churches: Westminster Church of Fresno, and First Presbyterian Church of Visalia. In our time, we spent lots of time with the people of FIRM (Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministry), had the opportunity to visit with the founder of Dakota House, and also got to meet up with the owner of Fresno Brewing Company to discover how various downtown businesses (specifically, in the Fulton Mall) are trying to help each other out so that everyone stays in business. On top of all of this, we ate at an exotic new restaurant every night that served us with delicious food.

In those few days, there were many things that our group learned that were truly eye-opening. Working with the children of FIRM and helping out with various jobs that needed to be done was a blessing to all of us. Finding out about the secret war in Laos and how refugees came to the United States from Southeast Asia was incredible. Getting to hear the founder of the Dakota House, Jamie Barker, was a major treat, because we got to learn about what a saintly program she runs for kids in the downtown area. Going to the Fresno Brewing Company was also extremely enjoyable. From talking to some of my fellow youth groupers, it is safe to say that we have all benefited drastically from this mission trip, and saw the workings of God in the people we met along the way.

What Is the Southeast Asian Lay Training Program?

laochristian Presbyteries are looking for ways to help Southeast Asians enjoy all the advantages of the Presbyterian Church (USA), including seminary-training leadership.  The Southeast Asian Lay Training Program, initiated by General Assembly's National Laotian Presbyterian Council through Rev. Dr. James Oudom, educates key leaders in the basic Presbyterian doctrine and practice as prescribed for Lay Commissioned Pastor in the Book of Order. The program consists of six core courses taught over the course of three summers: Reform Theology; Presbyterian Polity; Worship & Sacrament; Bible Interpretation; teaching in the Reform Tradition; Reform Preaching. Interpretations into SEA languages are provided by members of the National Councils of the Southeast Asian Committees of the PC(USA). Other languages can also be provided as needed. Successful completion of the six courses earns certification verifying the graduate received adequate education to carry out the duties of a lay commissioned pastor. Four people from UPC Lao members are attending on May 26 - May 31.

The dates of UPC's Lao song practice depend on the week's time availability. Sometimes song practice is on Friday and sometimes song practice is on Thursday evening at FIRM.  The Lao Culture Revival for Christ 2013 is on May 4, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. at FIRM. Everyone is invited to experience Lao language worship and Lao food with seven Lao church groups in Fresno.

The UPC Lao Fellowship continues to witness to the community in many important ways.  Meeting and community events are two of the best ways to share about God's love.

Adult Ministries

In May, Walt Blore concludes the study of Paul's letters written to the churches he founded.  Study of the "Acts of the Apostles" follows Paul's letters to a conclusion in May.

The topical Adult Education class continues with "The Red Letters," a six-part DVD series by Tony Campolo, noted pastor, sociologist, and social commentator.  This series focuses on the words of Jesus printed with red letters in some versions of the Bible, especially as they relate to social issues and values.  Campolo challenges problems of complacency in such issues as taking care of the poor; finding justice for the oppressed; loving our enemies; and other issues from Jesus' words.  Please join the UPC adult education group for this thought provoking class of listening, viewing, and discussion.

In conjunction with the class discussion, Campolo offers his daily blog; television and radio shows; and Red Letter Christians.org all focused on Red Letter Christianity which might be of interest to individuals.

Columbarium: Building on a Foundation

University Presbyterian's planned columbarium will add a rich dimension to the life and ministry of our church.  As we move forward, the Columbarium Committee invites everyone to reflect on what it means to have loved ones resting on church grounds.

The term "columbarium" comes from the Latin Columba, or dove, because the niches for the urns resemble the compartments used to keep doves and pigeons.  We as believers can rejoice in the dove symbolism, representing the Holy Spirit, who unites the Body of Christ with our Father God.

But why build a columbarium at UPC?  Churches used to have room for burials on church grounds -- the churchyard -- on consecrated ground.  Churchyards were central to community life.  As towns grew into cities, and cities into suburbs, land for earth burial became more scarce.  Cemeteries were planted apart from places of worship, on the outskirts of communities often far from daily family life.

The Columbarium brings burial grounds back to our places of worship.  They conserve land, important to us as stewards of God's creation.  And inurnment is less costly than traditional burial, important to us as stewards of God's treasure.

UPC is continuing an ancient practice with a Columbarium.  One PC(USA) congregation in New York City explains it this way:  "Burial within or near the worship space of the Christian community is a practice that reaches back to the days of the catacombs.  By the fourth century, when Christians were first permitted to own public buildings, many churches were erected over the burial sites of apostles, saints and other martyred church leaders."

Several congregations in Fresno have columbariums; Hope Lutheran, St. Columba Episcopal, and First Congregational are some of them.  UPC plans to join them in this joyful ministry.

"Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die."

John 11.25-26

Thank You Corner

So many of you from the congregation donated eggs, candies, and trinkets for the Children's Easter Egg Hunt this Easter Sunday. The youth and nursery staff hid a total of 310 eggs! Thanks to each and every one of you.  You are always so generous!

A HUGE thanks to Linda Stolling for her tireless work in putting on the Yard Sale.  And, thanks to all who assisted with this year's event and donated your treasures.  We raised a whopping $2,000, which will go a long way in making camp a possibility for those students who worked the yard sale!  Thank you! -- Margie Nunez, Director, Children's & Youth Ministry
