Twelve Gifts of the Holy Season
By Dr.Chris Neufeld-Erdman, senior pastor
Here in the northern hemisphere, we're turning toward winter, the darkest, coldest time of the year. In late October, we felt the change as the rains came and the Valley cooled.
November is a threshold. It marks the transition of seasons. The autumn harvest is gathered in, and we ready ourselves for the coming winter. Of course, our experience of this transition is much more subtle than it is in more severe climates. And we who spend most of our time inside cars and buildings and homes don't encounter this threshold as our farmers and field workers do. Few of us practice the same threshold rituals as our ancestors did.
Failure to mark the transition can leave us modern people poorly prepared and unable to receive the gifts God sends our way as the year turns toward darker and colder days.
For Christians, November also closes the Christian Year and welcomes the dawning of a new journey through the gospel story all over again. At Thanksgiving we look back over the year and open our eyes to see the hand of God guiding and directing and providing, regardless of how challenging or painful certain times of the year were. Then on Sunday, November 25, the last worship service of the year, "Christ the King" or "Reign of Christ" Sunday, we acclaim Jesus Christ as Sovereign over all creation. This triumphant closing of the year readies us to turn again toward the quiet, sobering whisper of hope that comes to us as Advent begins on Sunday, December 2, when we listen longingly for the promise of Christ's coming again to restore all things, inching our way toward Christmas.
Speaking of Christmas, isn't it a wonder that this news of the bright Light of salvation comes to us in the north at almost precisely the darkest day of the year? In the southern hemisphere, it comes during the brightest days--and that has gospel beauty too. But I love this light that shines in the darkness and the hope it brings me each year, reminding me that no matter how dark, there is a light that shines bringing hope and the promise of the fullness of God inhabiting all creation.
This year, I invite you to enter this threshold season and mark the time with intention. Between Sunday, November 18 through Sunday, January 6, we're offering you "Twelve Gifts for the Holy Season." The season begins on Sunday, November 18 with a concert of "Lessons and Carols" by the Fresno Pacific University music program. It ends on Sunday, January 6 with our Epiphany services and evening potluck dinner. Twelve events to help you experience the season with meaning.
The modern world may have lost touch with the rituals and habits that once helped people stay connected to God's good earth and remember their dependence upon the Creator. But we Christians can still keep pace with time in a way that keeps us connected to God, cultivating a healthy dependence upon the goodness of God, and humbly seeking God in the ordinary experiences of daily life.
These "Twelve Gifts for the Holy Season" will help you do just that.

Session summary
The UPC Session met Tuesday, October 9. Here is a brief summary:
1. The Session postponed its 2013 budget discussion so Treasurer Jim Gabel would be able to attend. A called meeting will be Tuesday, October 30, to discuss the budget and make a recommendation to the congregation regarding the pastors' 2013 terms of call. The terms of call will be presented at the stated congregational meeting Sunday, November 4.
2. A panel made up of Pastor Chris Neufeld-Erdman and Elders Jane Reid (Children's Ministries), Jeanette Hodgson (Worship and Music), and Greg Faulk (Adult Ministries) gave a presentation to the Session regarding the Sunday worship schedule at UPC. A congregational survey had been done in the summer of 2011, which asked questions regarding worship preferences, worship times, and adult Sunday school. The survey results indicated the majority of those who responded to the survey wanted the 8:30 a.m. worship service to start later in the morning, such as 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. The committee presented its recommendation to the Session at this meeting and asked each elder to think and pray about this. After further discussion, a vote on the committee's recommendation will be taken at the November 13 Session meeting.
3. Deacon Edith Barnette updated the elders on the activities of the deacons.
4. Deacon Moderator Christi Paradise, chair of the Columbarium Committee, updated the Session on the progress the committee has made. She distributed a packet to each elder that showed a drawing of the proposed site from architect James Quinn, a proposal from the Christy Vault Company showing its costs for the niches, and a draft policy. She requested input from the Session regarding whether or not the area needs to be fenced off for security, and it was determined by those present that a locked gate with a panic bar be part of the project. The gate would need to be unlocked during worship services on Sunday. Christi reaffirmed the committee's commitment that construction on the project will not commence until a certain number of niches are sold, which would cover the cost of construction. She agreed to return to the Session for its approval when (1) the Columbarium Committee feels it is ready to start selling the niches, and (2) when the committee is ready to break ground and construct the columbarium.
5. A single worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 23, and on Sunday, December 30.
6. Session approved a called meeting on Sunday, October 28, at 5 p.m. to meet with the new member candidates. A potluck dinner with the congregation will follow at 6 p.m.

Lao Partners travel to Xiang Khouang Province, Laos
Our Lao Partners team is scheduled to depart November 6 to work with the Lao Evangelical Church and staff of Khangkhay College for our fourth Living Waters for the World installation. College officials have been anxiously awaiting this installation for the past two years. Last year they demonstrated their interest and commitment by sending two staff members to work with our installation team in Ba Na Sang Pai.
The Rev. Sharon Stanley heads up this year's Lao Partners team, with translation support from Tout Tou and Tony Bounthapanya. Tout Tou will be working closely with Susan Quinn and the Rev. Woody Rea on clean-water training, while Tony will work with Jeremy Dodge to provide operational and maintenance training for the installation team.
Our Lao Partners team asks your ongoing prayer support as we continue to develop our partnership with the people of Laos, the leaders of LEC, and the government officials responsible for the oversight of this college. Our team requests specific prayers that our Lord will give his wisdom to all people working together on this project, and that our working together will continue to be an instrument for us to share Christ's love. Members of our team have specific requests:
-
Tony and Tout Tou ask prayer for their health, and protection for their two sons while they are away. -
Susan is having shoulder surgery in January, and she requests prayer for her health and physical comfort during her travels.

Adult education for November
November will continue our adventures in the Acts of the Apostles and our "Taste of Real Community."
Walt Blore takes us along in the book of Acts as the apostles now head out into Asia and Europe. The focus will primarily be the first journey of Paul.
We also continue in our small groups as we sample a "Taste of Real Community." The groups keep exploring as long as they are led and then -- hopefully -- continue new journeys.
On November 11, we are treated to a special presentation by Lou Paradise on "Truth." This has the potential to be a really fascinating experience.
On November 18, we have one of two guest speakers, to be announced! Stay tuned.
November 4 is our Congregational Meeting and November 25 is Christ the King Sunday, so we have no Adult Ed classes. |

Truly give of yourself
UPC members last month heard about how to join the life-saving National Bone Marrow Program donor registery. Every year, more than 140,000 people are diagnosed with blood cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma. Some of those people are in our own UPC congregation. Many can be cured with a life-giving bone marrow transplant. The more donors who register, the better chance patients around the world -- and in UPC's own congregation -- will find a match. To learn more and to register, click here. If you have questions and want to talk to a human, call or email Sarah Nettels. |
Looking for a newsletter editor
The University Press has been faithfully and joyfully edited by Sarah Nettels each month. Sadly, Sarah is turning her duties over to another UPC member starting with the January 2013 issue. Although her's will be tough shoes to fill, we are putting out the word that we need a new University Press editor, or guest editors. The program for the newsletter is easy to use, and Sarah or Kerry, in the office, will be available for training and support. If you want to try it out for a month, share it with another member, or commit for a year, email Sarah or Kerry.
