Community Outreach

St. Clair Hospital visited Outreach
Members of the newly established St. Clair Hospital Community Outreach Board Committee visited Outreach in April  2010, and met with  Board President, Steve Darcangelo, 1st Vice-President, Colleen McDonnell, M.D., Jim Brophy and Karen Johnson. After a brief tour, the hospital officials were informed about our programs and activities, budget, and grant providers. The purpose of the hospital committee is to visit various non-profit agencies in the community to look for opportunities to collaborate or highlight their services.

Outreach Teen and Family Services is a non-profit, community based teen counseling agency. Founded in 1974, we provide professional, confidential, affordable counseling to young people ages 12 to 21 and their families. We see clients for a variety of concerns from anger management, family problems and school related issues to depression, anxiety, and drug and alcohol issues.

All of our counselors hold a minimum of a master's degree in counseling or social work. Clients are seen within a short period of time from the initial request for services.

Funding for Outreach is provided by the Mt. Lebanon Municipality, Allegheny County, fees, foundations, corporations, school contracts, businesses, civic and religious groups, fundraisers, and individual donations.

Select Outreach counselors are credentialed providers for Highmark and UPMC Western Behavior Health private insurers. If necessary, we can also provide services on a sliding scale fee.

Jeff Longo - Counselor of the Year
Board President Steve Darcangelo and Counselor Jeff Longo
Darcangelo & Longo
Jeff Longo was honored at Outreach's annual gala as the Counselor of the Year.

Jeff received his Master of Social Work degree and his Home and School Visitor Certification from the University of Pittsburgh in 1999. His career as a mental health professional has included work at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital, Spectrum Family Network, Pressley Ridge Schools, and Shaler Area School District.  He currently serves as North Allegheny School District's Student Assistance Program Coordinator and Counselor.

Jeff has been with Outreach since 1999. He works with teens individually or in a group setting, providing them with support and guidance as they navigate the often challenging adolescent years. He is experienced in the areas of drug and alcohol abuse, anger management, self esteem, parenting issues, peer issues, depression, as well as a number of other topics.

In addition to providing counseling to teens and their families at Outreach, Jeff facilitates Outreach's Magistrate Alternative Sentencing for Teens (MAST) program and is one of the facilitators of the agency's Parenting Positively program. Jeff is dedicated to Outreach's mission of helping young people and their families, and is always willing to make the extra effort for the agency and his clients. Outreach is very fortunate to have Jeff on staff.

Parent Survival Skills Training (PSST)
PSSTDo you have a teenager who is struggling with addiction? Do you wish you had someone who understands what you are going through?  Do you feel like you are playing a game and don't know the rules?  If you can answer yes to these questions, you need to know about Parent Survival Skills Training (PSST).

The goal of PSST is to empower parents with skills they need to deal with teenage substance abuse by giving them support, information and techniques to help their child deal with addiction. There is no charge for attending the group and the only requirement is that parents are serious in wanting to make a difference in their child's life. Juvenile Probation officers coordinate this program at its three locations:
Eastern Community Based Probation Office on the 1st Saturday of the month
Trinity Lutheran Church on the 2nd Saturday of the month
Outreach Teen & Family Services on the 3rd Saturday of the month
All sessions are held 9:00-11:30 am.

Please visit the group's website for additional information and to read their blog of parents who are struggling and learning how to best deal with teenage addiction:

Teen & Adult Advisory Panels
The Teen and Adult Outreach Advisory Panels have been very active over the past two months. The teen members have adopted the Highmark Walk as their volunteer project and have been recruiting walkers and soliciting donations. The adult panel is reviewing our counseling programs and identifying improved marketing approaches. A special thanks to all panel members for their dedication and commitment to improving Outreach services.
