Join us in celebrating Literacy Awareness Month
|
Make a difference
Our annual celebration of Literacy Awareness Month highlights how literacy can reduce poverty, promote health and strengthen families. An estimated 100,000 DuPage County residents need to improve their English skills. At Literacy DuPage, we have a waiting list of more than 200 learners who are hoping to be paired soon with a volunteer tutor who can help them with those skills. Nearly 30 local libraries are helping spread the word by participating in International Literacy Day activities on Tuesday, Sept. 8. You can help too. Read More

Literacy DuPage ready to serve adult probationers
More than a dozen tutors recently attended a presentation by the DuPage County Department of Probation and Court Services to learn about a new initiative to help probationers successfully re-enter into their community. We believe that education is central in assisting probationers with limited English skills, to help them function in their community as productive citizens.
Low-risk probationers are now being screened and referred to Literacy DuPage to receive tutoring services. Tutors will be matched with a learner and meet weekly, in a public place such as a library, to teach communicative skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Tutoring is scheduled to begin in October.
