LDP Board & Office News
We are pleased to announce an addition to the Literacy DuPage Board of Directors.
Patti works as an attorney for a Naperville law firm, focusing primarily on real estate matters. She taught mathematics in the Joliet area and worked as a paralegal near Orland Park and Burr Ridge before graduating from The John Marshall Law School in 1998.
Patti lives with her husband, Dave, in Mokena. They are very involved in their grandchildren's activities and serve as wish granters for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. Patti hopes to use her educational background and legal skills to assist Literacy DuPage in its mission to enhance DuPage County residents' lives by improving their English skills.
We also have had an intern working with us this summer.
Kiran is a recent graduate of Benedictine University, where she obtained a Bachelor's degree of Science in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology with a minor in Math. She aspires to become a physician and plans on attending Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University this fall.
Kiran is an immigrant. She arrived in the U.S. at the age 6 without knowing a word of English. Through perseverance in academics (and watching a lot of WTTW), she was able to overcome the language barrier by 5th grade. As a part-time, temporary employee with Literacy Dupage, she yearns to share her experiences and skills to help improve the organization.

Greetings!
Without the support of our benefactors it would be impossible to do the work we do.
This past fiscal year, Ronald McDaniel, founder of the Ronald L. McDaniel Foundation, generously offered us $20,000 and a matching grant if we met the revenue target established in our Board-approved budget. We not only met but exceeded our goal and received a total of $35,000 from McDaniel's foundation.
McDaniel, a long-time Literacy DuPage supporter, started his foundation in 1995. Since then, he has presented grant challenges to a variety of nonprofits in the community, including Literacy DuPage.
"If I can get more nonprofits into a position where they have one year's cash on hand then it makes their lives and their programs a lot easier going forward," he said." I try to make my grant challenge in such a way that ... I can get the organization, over time, to improve their financial position."
"I tell them here's an amount of money I'm going to give you no matter what, and here's an amount you may earn if you accomplish these goals," he said.
McDaniel has been instrumental in driving accountability into the Literacy DuPage Board by spurring Board giving through a previous match challenge.
He said he has been pleased with the fundraising efforts of Literacy DuPage and is impressed with "the tremendous number of volunteers that provide an extensive, non-compensated benefit."
"Literacy DuPage is one of those organizations that runs on a very small budget and yet accomplishes a great deal of good," he said. "I think the effectiveness of Literacy DuPage is very good and I believe what they do in terms of assisting people to be able to function in a language they may not have been that familiar with when they came to the area is beneficial for everyone."

Changes are coming...
For 16 weeks, a group of DeVry University students helped us upgrade and improve our technology. Here is a look at what the teams worked on:
Multimedia Design and Development: The students went over requirements for a new website and alternatives for a content management system. Staff was trained on how to use the new system and we are now working on getting a new website up and running! Stay tuned!
Computer Information Systems: This team reviewed our needs for a program database, recommended a solution and completed a hardware inventory.
Networking: This team created a better connected workplace, through the introduction of remote access and the set up of our first server -- ever!
