The Glamorous Non-profit Life

Have you always wanted a peek inside the glamorous life of a non-profit Executive Director? Well, here's your chance!

Click here to listen in as Literacy DuPage's Executive Director, Bernie Steiger, chats with Andy Busch and Lisa Dietlin of Lisa Dietlin and Associates on VoiceAmerica's Engage with Andy Busch
about adults who desperately seek access to literacy programs geared for their specific needs.

The glamorous part of course was that Steiger did the interview from her neighbor's Mickey Mouse phone while dressed in yoga pants and a t-shirt (long story)!

 Greetings!

We are off to a busy start this year at Literacy DuPage!

Our sold-out Reading Between the Wines event on Jan. 31 was a huge success, raising more than $7,000. That is $2,000 more than our goal and $3,000 more than last year! A special thank you to all our sponsors and guests!

Earlier this month, we had the exciting opportunity to meet with ProLiteracy President Kevin Morgan and Vice President Peter Waite. ProLiteracy is the national organization with whom we are affiliated. We discussed the many activities Literacy DuPage has been involved with in the last 18 months and shared ideas for increased collaboration to raise awareness about the importance of adult literacy.

To read more about ProLiteracy, visit their website here.

Our 2014/2015 annual appeal is making great strides. A matching grant through the Ronald McDaniel Foundation is available through the end of our fiscal year, so please continue to help us meet our goal while the grant is applicable!

Thank you for all that you do! You
are a Key to Our Success!

LDP Board & Office News

We are pleased to announce an addition to the Literacy DuPage Board of Directors.

Julio Lara is a past volunteer tutor who decided to join the board in hopes of volunteering more of his time and skills. Julio has more than 26 years experience working with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in various capacities. Currently, he is the deputy division director of the division of nuclear materials safety. Julio has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Houston and is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee. He hopes his new role will give him an opportunity to spread the word about the value and importance of Literacy DuPage's mission.

In addition, we have also welcomed three new staff members.

Quinn Hampton is our new Student Intake and Support Specialist. She enjoys teaching English to parents who want to improve their English skills and leads a conversation group at the Xilin Asian Community Center in Naperville. Quinn grew up in North Carolina and earned a bachelor's degree in speech pathology and a master's degree in teaching the hearing impaired. She raised her family overseas and in doing so, gained an appreciation for the importance of bringing cultures together. During her time abroad, Quinn also developed the belief that everyone should be given a chance to assimilate through the power of literacy.

Sang Yup Lee is our new Volunteer Outreach Coordinator.  He will be running our volunteer orientations and expanding our outreach efforts to recruit more volunteer tutors. Sang has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a juris doctor from Notre Dame University. As an immigrant who greatly benefited from one-on-one tutoring when he first moved to the U.S, Sang is passionate about our mission and serving the needs of our learners. Outside Literacy DuPage, Sang works as an attorney on fair housing, consumer rights, and employment rights matters.  He also serves as a new parent group facilitator for Ohana Birth and Parenting Services. Sang lives in Naperville with his wife and son.

Diana Johnson is a new tutor trainer.  She started teaching English as a foreign language when she lived in Germany and continued when she moved back to the U.S. She has taught at refugee agencies, colleges, and businesses. Diana received her master's degree in English as a second language and started volunteering with Literacy DuPage because she wanted to work with students one-on-one. Now, she also enjoys training new tutors. Diana lives in Lombard with her husband and has a daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons who live in France.
