Greetings!
It's been a busy fall at Literacy DuPage!
In September, we celebrated National Literacy Awareness Month with several fun events. A record 17 libraries participated in International Literacy Day by setting up information tables. Three bookstores also held outreach events. At all the locations, Literacy DuPage circulated a newly made Literacy Fact Sheet.
Our 2014 recognition luncheon and annual membership meeting on Oct. 4 was a great success. More than 200 people were in attendance, including 53 children who went home with new books.
In addition, over the past few weeks we have been getting great feedback from our tutors on our redesigned training curriculum.
So far, we have successfully concluded six sessions in the first half of the fiscal year. Since the last newsletter we launched a new tutor newsletter and an innovative new localized peer mentor tutor support group too.
Thank you for all that you do! You are a Key to Our Success!

Student Accomplishments
The following results are based off the 258 adult learners who received 35 or more hours of instruction in FY14.
As a family member, 203 adults gained new or improved skills such as reading to children, opening a bank account, shopping, and making medical appointments.
As a worker, 150 learners gained or improved new employment-related skills such as filling out applications, interviewing for a job, and reading safety information. Seven adult learners earned their GED.
As a community member, 186 adults gained skills such as getting a library card, using the post office, and talking to neighbors. In addition, 20 applied for or received citizenship and 6 either registered to vote or voted for the first time.
These results show that the time invested in the life of a student does make a difference. Congratulations, students and tutors, on these wonderful accomplishments!

LDP Board & Office News
We are pleased to announce the new officers for the Literacy DuPage Board of Directors.
Jea n Demas is our new board president. Jean began her career in adult literacy at the Lisle Library District in 1990 and works with Literacy DuPage to recommend ESL learners and basic education adults for one-to-one tutoring. She also recruits tutors and maintains a collection of adult literacy materials for check out. In addition to serving on the LDP board, Jean is the adult literacy librarian at the Lisle Library. Our other LDP board officers for 2014-15 include:
Bob Lampkin - Vice President
Nancy Deaton - Secretary
Joe Sarnicki - Treasurer
In addition, we have also welcomed three new members to the board.
Erika Grande is the Latin America marketing manager for Vision Solutions. She has helped companies strategically grow into new markets and directed bilingual marketing in the U.S. and Latin America. In a former position, she was also in charge of developing educational programs for bilingual parents and students. She has been recognized with numerous awards for her outstanding community work in both Illinois and Michigan.
Michael Meyers worked for Lucent Technology for nearly 35 years before retiring in 2001. His work was focused on product development and in his most recent role he served as product management director. Since retiring, he has been involved in a number of non-profit activities. He believes the primary way to increase the well being of the country is via education, with literacy a critical first step. He lives in Naperville with his wife, Sandy, and has two grown daughters.
Robert Talbot recently retired as an executive for Unilever, where he worked for more than 25 years in finance and operations. He came from a home and community where English was not the primary language for adults. He saw firsthand the struggles this caused, but at that time, programs like Literacy DuPage were not available. Robert hopes to help make LDP more available and effective in DuPage County.
