A message from the new Executive Director at Literacy DuPage,
Bernie Steiger

Dear Tutors and Friends of Literacy DuPage,

Thank you to everyone for your very warm welcome. I am both excited and honored to have been selected as the new Executive Director at Literacy DuPage! As a former tutor and staff member, it truly feels like coming home.

I'd also like to thank Tana Tatnall for her support and assistance in helping me transition into this position. She has done an excellent job in providing vision and leadership during a time of tremendous growth in our organization. Following in Tana's shoes won't be easy - but with your support, participation and input, we will continue to change lives and impact future generations!

Hope to see you at our Recognition Luncheon on October 5th!

Thanks much,

Student Accomplishments, Year End Results
Essential Pieces Coming Together

For the year ending 2013, 469 adult learners received one-on-one or small group tutoring and we welcomed 115 new tutors! Amazingly, our 361 active tutors donated over 25,000 hours of volunteer time.

In FY13, a total of 261 adult learners, who received 35 or more hours of instruction, reported:

As a family member, 207 adults gained 1,535 new or improved skills such as reading to children, helping children with homework, attending school meetings, opening a bank account, writing checks, shopping, reading medicine directions, and making medical appointments.

As a worker, 152 learners with a goal to improve as a worker gained 537 new employment-related skills such as filling out applications, interviewing for a job, reading safety information, reading work signs, and using a computer. Nine adult learners either worked towards or completed their GED.

As a community member, 187 adults gained 650 skills such as getting a library card, using the library, using the post office, and talking to neighbors. Also, 26 applied for or received citizenship and 15 either registered to vote or voted for the first time.

These results show that the time invested in the life of a student does make a difference. Congratulations, students and tutors, on these wonderful accomplishments!

Tutoring Tips

Learning is Remembering!

The review and recycling of new language items are critical to a student's ability to store and retrieve the words from their long term memory.  In fact, students forget many vocabulary words shortly after a lesson ends.

Language acquisition research shows that no more than 5 to 10 new words should be introduced at a time and that students need as many as 5 to 16 'meetings' with a new language item, in a variety of contexts,  before it can be truly learned and activated for genuine use.   A tutor can help solidify new words in long-term memory by creating regular opportunities that encourage a student to make meaningful connections of new vocabulary items.

Tutors will want to create regular opportunities for vocabulary review activities which use interesting and varied approaches and applications.  Both repetition and retrieval practice of new items are essential.  This can easily be achieved by organizing fun and motivating vocabulary games and activities.  Scrambled words, BINGO and Concentration are old standbys and students enjoy playing them.  Another game to use is called Scatter Sheet.

Scatter Sheet is a vocabulary reactivation and fluency exercise.  Give your student a piece of paper which has the 5-10 target words scattered across the sheet in no particular order.  Explain that you are going to give say the definition of a vocabulary word on the sheet and the student must identify it. Describe the word with vocabulary that is familiar to your student, for example:  it keeps food cold or frozen.  If the student recognizes the word refrigerator on the Scatter Sheet they can signal it by shouting it out or circling it.  If they can't recognize the word the tutor can make note that more exposure, review and practice is needed with this word.  Each word in turn is described and circled as it is recognized.

An extension activity for another tutoring session or for homework is to make up a gap-fill worksheet using familiar and learned descriptors used for the word clues, for example:

1)  A _______keeps food cold or frozen.

This activity further cements acquisition.   A challenging activity for later vocabulary reactivation is to reverse roles. Have the student use the Scatter Sheet to recall and provide definitions and descriptions while the tutor identifies the target vocabulary on another Scatter Sheet.
